Surface effects in controlled thermonuclear fusion (open access)

Surface effects in controlled thermonuclear fusion

During the operation of large size plasma facilities and future controlled thermonuclear fusion reactors the surfaces of such major components as container walls, beam limiters, diverter walls and beam-dump walls of the injector region will be exposed to particle and photon bombardment from primary plasma radiations and from secondary radiations. Such radiations can cause, for example, physical and chemical sputtering, blistering, particle- and photon- impact induced desorption, secondary electron and x-ray emission, backscattering, nuclear reactions, photo-decomposition of surface compounds, photocatalysis, and vaporization. Such effects in turn can (a) seriously damage and erode the bombarded surface and (b) release major quantities of impurities which will contaminate the plasma. The effects of some of the major surface phenomena on the operation of plasma facilities and future fusion reactors are discussed. (auth)

A Voltage-Controlled Incandescent Lamp Driver for Musical Performances of Multimedia Works (open access)

A Voltage-Controlled Incandescent Lamp Driver for Musical Performances of Multimedia Works

Performances of multimedia works are hampered by the difficulty of controlling large numbers of incandescent lamps rapidly and accurately. The instrument described in this document is aimed at alleviating this problem. Chapter I describes the design and operation of the voltage-controlled dimmer unit and the DC controller. Chapter II describes step-by-step procedures for building the instrument. Schematics, wiring diagrams, and illustrative photographs are included. Chapter III discusses some of the aesthetics and philosophy of multimedia composition, and then describes various scenarios which utilize the instrument. Included are the connection of peripheral control equipment, audio/Video interfacing, and the potential for constructing prepared tapes which will automatically drive the dimmers. The prototype was built at the NTSU Electronic Music Center.

Oxygen potential of uranium--plutonium oxide as determined by controlled- atmosphere thermogravimetry (open access)

Oxygen potential of uranium--plutonium oxide as determined by controlled- atmosphere thermogravimetry

The oxygen-to-metal atom ratio, or O/M, of solid solution uranium- plutonium oxide reactor fuel is a measure of the concentration of crystal defects in the oxide which affect many fuel properties, particularly, fuel oxygen potential. Fabrication of a high-temperature oxygen electrode, employing an electro-active tip of oxygen-deficient solid-state electrolyte, intended to confirm gaseous oxygen potentials is described. Uranium oxide and plutonium oxide O/M reference materials were prepared by in situ oxidation of high purity metals in the thermobalance. A solid solution uranium-plutonium oxide O/M reference material was prepared by alloying the uranium and plutonium metals in a yttrium oxide crucible at 1200$sup 0$C and oxidizing with moist He at 250$sup 0$C. The individual and solid solution oxides were isothermally equilibrated with controlled oxygen potentials between 800 and 1300$sup 0$C and the equilibrated O/ M ratios calculated with corrections for impurities and buoyancy effects. Use of a reference oxygen potential of -100 kcal/mol to produce an O/M of 2.000 is confirmed by these results. However, because of the lengthy equilibration times required for all oxides, use of the O/M reference materials rather than a reference oxygen potential is recommended for O/M analysis methods calibrations. Pacific Northwest Laboratory report on controlled thermonuclear reactor technology, January 1975 - September 1975

The PNL staff has been studying fusion technology in areas such as economics, fusion-fission hybrid concepts, materials, neutronics, environment and safety. These studies have been scoped to make efficient use of ERDA resources, and to complement and support efforts at other laboratories. The effect the plasma and associated radiation and emission will have upon the surfaces of the first wall are being studied. Neutron sputtering experiments were made on niobium and gold and the results were evaluated for absolute neutron yields. Molybdenum and vanadium were studied for effects of ion bombardment under various conditions of helium injection. Graphite cloth is being irradiated for examination of radiation effects because it is suggested for use in several CTR concepts as a shield between the plasma and the first wall. Helium effects are being studied to characterize degradation of structural metal properties. Work is progressing on absolute measurement of the electrical resistivity of insulators and the demonstration of the feasibility of producing insulating coatings by sputter deposition. (auth)

Characterization of plant communities adjacent to the B-C Cribs controlled area and REDOX pond areas on the 200 area plateau

The plant communities at the Hanford B-C Cribs controlled area and REDOX study areas are characterized. It is concluded that they are probably very much like the communities that existed prior to 1943 when the Hanford Reservation was established. (CH)

Microwave Measurements of Electron Density in a Spherical Inertial- Electrostatic Confinement System Using Six Ion Guns (open access)

Microwave Measurements of Electron Density in a Spherical Inertial- Electrostatic Confinement System Using Six Ion Guns

The electron density in a spherical inertial-electrostatic confinement device using six ion beams was studied with microwave techniques involving the fundamental and higher order cavity resonances. Thermal expansion problems were circumvented by switched operation of the device. The deuterium background pressure was found to be a dominant factor in determining n/sub e/ throughout the entire range of 0.4 to 10 milliTorr. With 1 m Torr pressure and 10 mA total ion current (at 20 to 40 keV) central electron densities of the order of 10$sup 9$ electrons/ cm$sup 3$ were estimated, with total population of approximately 10$sup 10$ electrons. No evidence of shell structure of the electron density was found, although the use of higher order modes to obtain better spatial resolution was precluded by the low magnitude of n/sub e/. Indirect indication of weak ion trapping was obtained by measurement of the enhancement of neutron flux that resulted when the guns were operated simultaneously. (auth)
