Corrective Action Decision Document/Closure Report for Corrective Action Unit 232: Area 25 Sewage Lagoons, Nevada Test Site, Nevada

This Corrective Action Decision Document/Closure Report (CADD/CR) has been prepared for Corrective Action Unit (CAU) 232, Area 25 Sewage Lagoons, in accordance with the Federal Facility Agreement and Consent Order. Located at the Nevada Test Site in Nevada, approximately 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, CAU 232 is comprised of Corrective Action Site 25-03-01, Sewage Lagoon. This CADD/CR identifies and rationalizes the U.S. Department of Energy, Nevada Operations Office's (DOE/NV's) recommendation that no corrective action is deemed necessary for CAU 232. The Corrective Action Decision Document and Closure Report have been combined into one report because sample data collected during the July 1999 corrective action investigation (CAI) activities disclosed no evidence of contamination at the site. Contaminants of potential concern (COPCs) addressed during the CAI included total volatile organic compounds, total semivolatile organic compounds, total Resource Conservation and Recovery Act metals, total pesticides, total herbicides, total petroleum hydrocarbons (gasoline and diesel/oil range), polychlorinated biphenyls, isotopic uranium, isotopic plutonium, strontium-90, and gamma-emitting radionuclides. The data confirmed that none of the COPCs identified exceeded preliminary action levels outlined in the CAIP; therefore, no corrective actions were necessary for CAU 232. After the CAI, best management practice activities were completed and included installation …

Development of advanced NO sub x control concepts for coal-fired utility boilers (open access)

Development of advanced NO sub x control concepts for coal-fired utility boilers

Hybrid technologies for reduction of NO{sub x} emissions from coal fired utility boilers may offer greater levels of NO{sub x} control than the sum of the individual technologies, leading to more cost effective emissions control strategies. Energy and Environmental Research Corporation had developed a hybrid NO{sub x} control strategy involving two proprietary concepts which has the potential to meet the US Department of Energy's goal at a significant reduction in cost compared to existing technology. The process has been named CombiNO{sub x}. CombiNO{sub x} is the integration of three separate NO control technologies: (1) Gas Reburning, (2) CO-Promoted Selective Non-Catalytic Reduction, and (3) Methanol Injection/NO{sub 2} Scrubbing.

Building America's Low-e Storm Window Adoption Program Plan (FY2014) (open access)

Building America's Low-e Storm Window Adoption Program Plan (FY2014)

Low emissivity (low-e) storm windows/panels appear to hold promise for effectively reducing existing home heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) consumption. Due to the affordability of low-e storm windows and the large numbers of existing homes that have low-performing single-pane or double-pane clear windows, a tremendous opportunity exists to provide energy savings by transforming the low-e storm window market and increasing market adoption. This report outlines U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Building America’s planned market transformation activities in support of low-e storm window adoption during fiscal year (FY) 2014.

Remote Engineering progress report, January-December 1984 (open access)

Remote Engineering progress report, January-December 1984

This report summarizes progress on work performed in the Remote Engineering group at Rocky Flats from January to December 1984. Remote Engineering's goals in all 1984 projects were to help increase production capacity, reduce radiation exposure, improve operation safety, improve product quality, or alleviate material-accounting errors. To convert manual operations to automated operations, Remote Engineering provided design, fabrication, and assembly of new equipment for varied plant operations. Seventeen separate projects were handled by Remote Engineering in 1984. Four of the projects automate related operations in Building 559, the Chemical Analytical Laboratory. In Building 559, the following operations needed mechanizing: Sample Cutting, Storage and Retrieval, Pneumatic Transfer System, and Chemical Operations Robotic System. Remote Engineering has completed the design of the hot-dip zinc-galvanizing furnace, and Maintenance will complete the assembly and installation. Three systems are in production use but are still undergoing development: the Unimate robot, the Laser Marker, and the Ingot Gripper. The Plutonium Oxide/Skull-Burn Furnace is awaiting installation. The other projects are at various states of design and development. These reports reflect the status of the projects as they existed December 31, 1984, except the Future Work sections which were updated August 27, 1985.

Technical evaluation panel summary report: ceramic and glass immobilization options fissile materials disposition program (open access)

Technical evaluation panel summary report: ceramic and glass immobilization options fissile materials disposition program

This report documents the results of a technical evaluation of the merits of ceramic and glass immobilization forms for the disposition of surplus weapons-useable plutonium. The evaluation was conducted by a Technical Evaluation Panel (TEP), whose members were selected to cover a relevant range of scientific and technical expertise and represented each of the technical organizations involved in the Plutonium Immobilization Program. The TEP held a formal review at Lawrence Liver-more National Laboratory (LLNL) from July 2%August 1, 1997. Following this review, the TEP documented the review and its evaluation of the two immobilization technologies in this report to provide a technical basis for a recommendation by LLNL to the Department of Energy (DOE) for the preferred immobilization form. The comparison of the glass and ceramic forms and manufacturing processes was a tremendous challenge to the TEP. The two forms and their processes are similar in many ways. The TEP went to great effort to accurately assess what were, in many cases, fine details of the processes, unit operations, and the glass and ceramic forms themselves. The set of criteria used by the Fissile Materials Disposition Program (FMDP) in past screenings and down-selections was used to measure-the two options. One …
