An Analysis of Factors Influencing the Reliability of Retrievable Storage Canisters for Containment of Solid High-Level Radioactive Waste

The reliability of stainless steel type 304L canisters for the containment of solidified high-level radioactive wastes in the glass and calcine forms was studied. A reference system, drawn largely from information furnished by Battelle Northwest Laboratories and Atlantic Richfield Hanford Company is described. Operations include filling the canister with the appropriate waste form, interim storage at a reprocessing plant, shipment in water to a Retrievable Surface Storage Facility (RSSF), interim storage at the RSSF, and shipment to a final disposal facility.

Analysis of Wing Loads on a Flexible Swept-Wing Jet Bomber During Push-Pull Maneuvers (open access)

Analysis of Wing Loads on a Flexible Swept-Wing Jet Bomber During Push-Pull Maneuvers

Report presenting measurements of the loads of the wing of a Boeing B-47A medium bomber using strain-gage instrumentation during 23 symmetrical push-pull maneuvers at a variety of altitudes, Mach numbers, and gross weights. Time histories of aerodynamic shear, bending moment, and torque at each of four spanwise stations on the left wing and one on the right wing were created. Based on the results, presently available methods seem to be capable of predicting additional and basic loads accurately within the range of flight conditions in the test.

Application and Operation of the 325 Building Well Counter (open access)

Application and Operation of the 325 Building Well Counter

Well-type scintillation counters have found use in many radiochemical laboratories. A gamma scintillation well counter has been used to measure the gamma activity of liquid samples in the 325 Building counting room for about a year. This well counter has been built and calibrated so that gamma activity measurements made with it can be easily compared with measurements made with the gamma scintillation counter (GSC). The well counter is electronically identical to the present GSC and differs only in the shape of the crystal used and the physical arrangement of the lead shield. The crystal contains a well which allows a tube containing the sample to be inserted in the crystal. The physical arrangement of the detector greatly simplifies the preparation of liquid samples for activity measurement. The 325 Building well counter and its application to chemical research and plant process analysis will be discussed in the following paragraphs. An operating procedure is also included.

A Glossary of the Mining and Mineral Industry (open access)

A Glossary of the Mining and Mineral Industry

From Introduction: "This glossary is published by the Bureau of Mines as a contribution to the mining literature in the belief that it will fill a long-felt need. It contains about 20,000 terms; these include both technical and purely local terms related to metal mining, coal mining, quarrying, petroleum, and natural gas, and metallurgical works; names of useful, important, and common minerals and rocks; and geological terms. It presents in one comprehensive volume the available standard, technical terms relating to the mining and mineral industry, as well as provincialisms that have been or are now in use in English-speaking countries."

The Lindemann and Grüneisen Laws (open access)

The Lindemann and Grüneisen Laws

The Lindemann assumption of direct contact of neighboring atoms at fusion is replaced by the criterion that melting occurs when the root-mean-square amplitude of thermal vibration reaches a critical fraction ρ, presumed the same for all isotropic monatomic solids, of the distance of separation of nearest-neighbor atoms. The Debye-Waller theory of the temperature dependence of the intensity of Bragg reflection of x-rays is used, without further assumptions, to derive a generalized Lindemann law. In contrast to the Lindemann form, all physical quantities involved in this formulation are evaluated at the fusion point, and departure of the average energy of an atomic oscillation from the equipartition value is taken into account by the quantization factor of the Debye-Waller theory. If the Grüneisen constant γm of the solid at fusion is evaluated by its definition from the Debye frequency of the solid, use of the generalized Lindemann law and Clapeyron's equation permits one to express γm in terms of the bulk modulus of the solid at melting and the latent heat and volume change of fusion. By means of Grüneisen's law applied to the solid at fusion, γm can be expressed likewise in terms of the corresponding bulk modulus, thermal expansion, volume, …

Measurement of the Wolfenstein Parameter R at 210 Mev. (open access)

Measurement of the Wolfenstein Parameter R at 210 Mev.

"Recent theoretical advances in describing the nucleon-nucleon interaction (particularly in the T=1 state) have emphasized the importance of obtaining an unambiguous experimental determination of the scattering matrix so that the nuclear phase shifts and details of the nuclear potential may be revealed. It is possible to select five experiments, the results of which, in principle at least, determine the scattering matrix and phase shifts uniquely at one energy. Two of these experiments, the cross section and polarization over the angular range of 0 to 90 degrees in the center of mass system, have been made at the University of Rochester at a laboratory energy of about 210 Nev."
