Photograph of a display case filled with oral history interview transcripts, photographs, stories from the archived North Texas Daily newspapers, a street survey of southeast Denton book, and other texts from the Denton Women’s Interracial Fellowship held by the Special Collections. On this shelf, are oral history transcripts with DWIF members Catherine Bell and Euline Brock interviewed by Richard Byrd. The Denton Women’s Interracial Fellowship, was a group of white and black Denton women who came together in 1964 to ask questions about how to work together across different races and to take on projects related to infrastructure and housing. The survey of this student project was conducted by Liane Malinowski's English class, where students examined these materials.

Oral History Interview with Karen and Clark Klein, November 16, 2016
Transcript of an interview with Karen and Clark Klein. Karen attended Notre Dame Catholic School in Kerrville and graduated from Tivy High School before completed a course at Durham Business College. She worked at Wool and Mohair Warehouse in Ingram before marrying Clark in 1962. Clark also attended Notre Dame School and Tivy where the couple met. He served in the Army for three years, worked briefly the postal services, and enlisted again in the National Guard. He served until 1982 and achieved the rank of Command Sergeant Major. The couple had three children and lived in San Antonio, Austin for ten years, before moving back to Kerrville. Several photos follow the transcript text.

Student Teachers’ Changing Confidence in Teaching
Research shows that student teachers find the mentor teacher and the student teaching experience itself the two most influential factors in their practicum experience. This study examined five student teachers and the two mentor teachers of each in elementary school settings within a metropolitan school district in North Texas. Lave and Wenger’s (1991, 2002) community of practice theory informed this study. Data sources included mentor teacher interviews, student teacher interviews, student teacher observations, student teacher/mentor teacher dialogue journals, and student teacher reflections. A collective case study approach was followed to gain a detailed understanding of the experiences of the five student teachers, looking specifically at their confidence in teaching and the factors associated with it. Findings indicated that the confidence in teaching of all five student teachers changed throughout their practicum experiences. Results suggested many factors influenced these changes. Student teachers shared that the student teaching experience, the grade level/subjects taught, their relationships with their students, and their relationships with their mentor teachers contributed to their confidence. The mentor teachers perceived that student teachers’ confidence could be influenced by consistency in classroom management and their interactions with their mentor teachers. Oral History Interview with Laura Bussey, July 8, 2010
The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Laura “Sally” Bussey. Bussey was born in Goree, Texas on 29 April 1916. She attended Mary Hardin Baylor College in Belton, Texas receiving a teaching degree. She married in 1939 and tells of Thomas J. Taylor, the father of Lady Bird Johnson, offering to build and furnish a new house for her and her husband if she would take a teaching job in Karnak, Texas. She accepted. Her husband entered the United States Army soon after the declaration of war and she describes the experience of having living essentials pre-packed and ready to go during multiple location changes and the living conditions encountered at these locations. She tells of war time rationing, planting victory gardens and doing volunteer work with the Red Cross. She describes keeping up with the progress of the war by listening to the radio news reports by Edward R. Morrow and fireside chats by President Roosevelt. She also describes a wonderful reunion with her husband upon his return from Europe at the conclusion of World War II and tells of their life until his retirement from the Army in 1967.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Max Crittenden. Crittenden joined the Navy in May of 1944. He served as a fire controlman. He completed boot camp in Farragut, Idaho. He went to Service School for Fire Control Operator in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, to learn how to use the fire control telescope. He went to Tacloban, Philippines in January 1945. He was assigned in New Guinea to the USS Flusser (DD-368), the flagship for DESRON 5. His job aboard was serving as one of the commodore’s orderlies. His ship and crew were part of the invasion on Balikpapan, Borneo in July 1945. He was discharged in June of 1946.

Oral History Interview with Richard Yarling, November 16, 2016
The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Richard Yarling. Yarling was at Indiana University when the war started. He joined the Navy while still in school and graduated in 1943. After further training and commissioing, he joined USS Chauncy (DD-667) and served as an assistance communications officer working closely with the radar and radio. Yarling shares anecdotes about life on board the destroyer and recalls going ashore at Tarawa. He also recalls experiences in two typhoons as well as carrier screening duty off the home islands of Japan. Yarling recalls witnessing other ships rescuing several crewmen from the stricken USS Franklin (CV-13). When the war ended, and after the ship returned from China, Yarling was discharged in January 1946.

Jean Wilkins-Dember, referred to as Mother Dember, was born in 1930 in Brooklyn, New York. After becoming involved in police brutality work and racial equality efforts in New York, she would move to the historic African American neighborhood of Third Ward in Houston, TX. She talks about her involvement in multicultural organizing and the psychological affects of racial oppression. Dember has participated for many years in the National Black United Front and SHAPE Community Center's Elder Institute of Wisdom. She talks about how she uses confrontational therapy to address police brutality and mass incarceration.

Interview with Charles Weldon Burgoon, life-time Denton resident and owner of Weldon's Saddle Shop. The interview includes Burgoon's experiences as a child in Denton, his genealogy, and Denton city and country history. Burgoon gives details about area rodeos, schooling in Denton, his summer job mowing lawns, experience with country living, and other various jobs including leather-working and tooling. He talks about the lack of shotgun shells and metal bathtubs during the Second World War, the courtship and marriage of his wife, the Cowboy Turtle Association, selling hand-made goods at rodeos, the Dallas Sportatorium, and professional wrestling. The interview also includes the opening of Burgoon's saddle shop and western store, Harpool's Farm Store, changes in his saddle shop, and the involvement of his daughter in the saddle shop. Burgoon talks about his son's college years and move to California, rental properties and the effect of the recession, and his thoughts on work ethic. It includes an appendix with photographs, a list detailing the images, and an article on The North Texas State Fair and Rodeo.
