Compliance-Gaining Among Anglo and Mexican-American Children (open access)

Compliance-Gaining Among Anglo and Mexican-American Children

This study investigates compliance-gaining rhetoric among Anglo and Mexican-American fourth graders in three schools in north Texas. The children were asked to respond to a scenario and to give a rationale for their persuasive strategies. An analysis of interviews with 52 children indicates that although the children used some similar strategies when attempting to gain compliance from an adult, there are also some significant differences between the two cultural groups.

The life and legend of Godfrey of Bouillon: the development of a cultural hero in art and literature (open access)

The life and legend of Godfrey of Bouillon: the development of a cultural hero in art and literature

In the fourteenth century Jacques de Longuyon popularized the theme of the nine worthies in his poem Les Voeux du Paon. Gofrey of Bouillon, Duke of Lower Lorraine and Protector of the Holy Sepulchre, was the last of the Christian Worthies in the poem. In his life and legends he exemplified the medieval world's heroic ideal. His achievement, the recovery of the Holy City for Christianity, was the pinnacle-the crowning glory-for the western world. By examining the historical fact of Godfrey's life and comparing it to legends and artistic renderings of that life, one can learn more about the time during which he lived and the people of which he was a part.

The motets of MS Bologna, Civico museo bibliografico musicale, Q 15 (open access)

The motets of MS Bologna, Civico museo bibliografico musicale, Q 15

This study is concerned with the motets in an important manuscript of polyphonic music of the first third of the fifteenth century. Although the book appears to have been written in northern Italy around 1430-1433, some of the motet repertory dates back to the last years of the fourteenth century, and, in one instance, perhaps to the middle of that century.
