Oral History Interview with Daniel Bustamante, July 1, 2016

Daniel Bustamante was born in Corpus Christi in 1948 and was raised in both Mathis and Corpus Christi. He grew up in a farm worker family and attended the "Mexican" School in Mathis. His activist consciousness began in 1965, when he left to California to work in the fields--the discrimination he faced changed him. In addition, he became a conscious objector during the Vietnam War. He attended Del Mar College from 1967-1969, where he became involved in the Anti-War Movement, the Young Democrats, and supported the UFW Grape Boycott. He moved to Houston in 1969 to attend the University of Houston. At UH, he became involved in MAYO efforts. In 1975, he hosted a party that ended in an incident of police brutality. Bustamante, along with 2 other activists (Eddie Canales and Elliot ?) sued HPD in Federal Court and won in 1979. In 1977-1978, in the aftermath of the Joe Campos Torres death and the Moody Park Rebellion, Bustamante led several marches and pickets to demonstrate against police brutality in Houston. Christy Martinez-Garcia was born and raised in Lubbock. She attended Lubbock High School, Lamar University, and completed her degree at Texas Tech University. After college, Martinez-Garcia worked for the Lubbock city government and then for the National Council of La Raza in Washington D.C. Upon her return to Lubbock, Martinez-Garcia sought to counter the local media narrative that mostly only depicted Hispanics as criminals or only immigrants. Thus, she founded the magazine, Latino Lubbock. She also ran for a position in the Lubbock ISD Board of Trustees. Martinez-Garcia has participated in numerous community organizations and was responsible for the naming of Cesar Chavez street in Lubbock as well as having a historical marker for a what once a migrant labor camp.

Maria Jiménez was born in Coahuila, Mexico in 1957. Having grown-up in a political household, she would migrate to Houston at the age of six. Jiménez discusses Mexican American segregation in Magnolia Park and how that experience shaped her youth activism. She also discusses her involvement in the Young Democrats, the University of Houston Mexican American Youth Organization, her bid for state representative against Ben Reyes under the Raza Unida ticket, and the Dixiecrats. Jiménez also addresses fights for gender equality in the Texas Chicana/o Movement, Black and Brown collaboration, and her participation in labor movements in Mexico. Lastly, she talks about her life-long dedication to immigrant and human rights.

Oral History Interview with Benita and Evaristo Albarado, July 14, 2016

Evaristo and Benita Albarado talked about the events surrounding the massacre at El Porvenir Ranch (Presidio County) in 1918, when a group of soldiers and Texas Rangers rounded up and shot Mexican American men who lived and worked at Porvenir. The father of Ms. Benita Albarado was a witness of the events, but did not talk about them until late in his life; his testimony motivated the Albarados to research and document the events surrounding the massacre. In addition to sharing the fruits of their efforts to show what really happened at Porvenir, the Albarados talked about growing up in segregated towns in west Texas (Benita Albarado is from Big Spring, while Evaristo Albarado was born and raised in Uvalde). They also talked about the importance of preserving the history of violence along the border, and discussed their collaboration with scholars in the production of an exhibit at the Bullock museum in Austin.

Oral History Interview with Gilbert Herrera, July 1, 2016

Gilbert Herrera was born in Lubbock, Texas. His father, a police officer, died on duty. Herrera was raised by a single mother. Having few economic opportunities, as a child he would break into homes to find food. As a teenager, Herrera joined a gang and eventually was jailed or imprisoned three times. He left prison a final time days before his mother died of cancer. During the early 1970s, Herrera began to lead and grow the West Texas Brown Berets. He organized several marches against police brutality and other social causes, including marches alongside African Americans, in and outside of Lubbock. Herrera is now a Baptist minister and leads a political action group in Lubbock named La Fuerza.

Lydia Evaro Madrigal was born in Odessa, Texas in 1957 and grew up in the majority minority area of south Odessa. She attended Zavala Elementary, Travis Elementary, Ector County Junior High and High School, and transferred to Permian Basin high school for the higher level of academic classes. Madrigal graduated from high school in 1975. She then attended Odessa College, and began working in a local television station due to a suit by attorney Richard Abalos due to the lack of people of color in that television station. She initially reported on the Larry Lozano case and saw the bias of the local media against Lozano and his family. Madrigal had been part political campaigns since she was thirteen and was offered a job at the Texas House of Representatives while in college. Eventually, she graduated from the University of Texas-Permian Basin 1989 after having attended Southwestern Texas State University. Madrigal has been the Latino outreach coordinator for the DNC in Washington D.C., has worked to make Odessa College a Hispanic Serving Institution, and is now a business owner in Odessa and Midland, Texas.

In eleventh grade, his parents forced him to be part of voluntary integration; he was one of six African-American children to enter Lufkin ISD in his grade. He then spent time in the military before returning to Lufkin to work at the State School. He served as city councilman and on the school board. In his interview, Mr. Kegler describes segregation in Lufkin, the long process of integration, life as an African-American in the military, and his politician and civic activism.

David T. Lopez was born in Laredo, TX. He attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he became involved as a reporter and editor for the Daily Texan and the Texas Ranger. His involvement in news reporting lead him to work for the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, where he reported on Black and Brown efforts in school desegregation. Attracted by Cesar Chavez and United Farm Workers movement, Lopez would participate in the strikes in the Rio Grande Valley and would report on the repressive tactics of the Texas Rangers as a plaintiff in the Medrano v. Allee lawsuit. He eventually got his law degree at South Texas College of Law in Houston and worked as a field representative for the AFL-CIO. Lopez discusses how he served on the HISD school board, the politics of the Huelga School Strike, how he was one of the first lecturers for the University of Houston Center for Mexican American Studies, and police brutality.
