Nondestructive-Evaluation Needs for Coal Liquefaction (open access)

Nondestructive-Evaluation Needs for Coal Liquefaction

Nondestructive-evaluation (NDE) needs for coal liquefaction have been identified by acquiring information from site visits, a literature review, and discussions with government personnel. Nondestructive evaluation has been highly rated in importance as a way to help alleviate problems in coal-conversion systems. The primary problems are associated with highly erosive and corrosive slurries being transferred throughout the coal-conversion process. Applicable NDE techniques for both pre-service and in-service inspection include high-temperature ultrasonics, acoustic emission, radiography, acoustic holography, and ultrasonic spectroscopy.

User Interface Program for Secure Electronic Tags (open access)

User Interface Program for Secure Electronic Tags

This report summarizes and documents the efforts of Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) in developing a secure tag communication user interface program comprising a tag monitor and a communication tool. This program can perform the same functions as the software that was developed at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), but it is enhanced with a user-friendly screen. It represents the first step in updating the TRANSCOM Tracking System (TRANSCOM) by incorporating a tag communication screen menu into the main menu of the TRANSCOM user program. A working version of TRANSCOM, enhanced with ANL secure-tag graphics, will strongly support the Department of Energy Warhead Dismantlement/Special Nuclear Materials Control initiatives. It will allow commercial satellite tracking of the movements and operational activities of treaty-limited items and transportation vehicles throughout Europe and the former USSR, as well as the continental US.

Physics Division Annual Review: 1 April 1982-31March 1983

The research program in nuclear physics in the Physics Division spans a broad range of activities and contributes to many of the major questions in the discipline. Activities may be roughly divided into three broad categories. Research with the tandem-linac in heavy-ion physics is doing well, though laboring under severe budgetary constraints, and outside use of the facility has increased substantially. Progress on the construction of the full ATLAS facility is coming along expeditiously and it is expected to be completed on schedule in 1985. In medium-energy physics, activities are continuing at LAMPF, as well as other accelerators, though considerable effort was devoted this year to the preparation of a proposal for a national electron accelerator facility.

Proceedings of the Workshop on Electronic and Ionic Collision Cross Sections Needed in the Modeling of Radiation Interactions with Matter, Held at Argonne National Laboratory December 6-8, 1983 (open access)

Proceedings of the Workshop on Electronic and Ionic Collision Cross Sections Needed in the Modeling of Radiation Interactions with Matter, Held at Argonne National Laboratory December 6-8, 1983

The term modeling in the Workship title refers to the mathematical analysis of the consequences of many collision processes for characterizing the physical stage of radiation actions. It requires as input some knowledge of collision cross sections. Traditionally, work on cross sections and work on the modeling are conducted by separate groups of scientists. It was the purpose of the Workshop to bring these two groups together in a forum that would promote effective communication. Cross-section workers described the status of their work and told what data were available or trustworthy. Modeling workers told what kind of data were needed or were most important. Twenty-two items from the workshop were prepared separately for the data base.
