Parallel strong-strong/strong-weak simulations of beam-beam interaction in hadron accelerators (open access)

Parallel strong-strong/strong-weak simulations of beam-beam interaction in hadron accelerators

In this paper, we present a parallel computational tool, BeamBeam3D, developed at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, for strong-strong/strong-weak beam-beam modeling. This tool calculates self-consistently the electromagnetic beam-beam forces for arbitrary distributions during each collision when a strong-strong beam-beam interaction model is used. When a strong-weak model is used, the code has the option of using a Gaussian approximation for the strong beam. BeamBeam3D uses a multiple-slice model, so finite bunch length effects can be studied. The code also includes a Lorentz boost and rotation to treat collisions with finite collision crossing angle. It handles arbitrary closed-orbit separation (static or time dependent) and models long-range beam-beam interactions using a newly developed shifted Green function approach. It can also handle multiple interaction points using externally supplied linear maps between interaction points in the strong-weak model. The code has been used to study beam-beam effects in the RHIC, Tevatron, and LHC. In this paper we will describe the BeamBeam3D code, present example simulations, and describe the code performance.

CDF Run IIb Silicon Vertex Detector DAQ Upgrade (open access)

CDF Run IIb Silicon Vertex Detector DAQ Upgrade

The CDF particle detector operates in the beamline of the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider at Fermilab, Batavia, IL. The Tevatron is expected to undergo luminosity upgrades (Run IIb) in the future, resulting in a higher number of interactions per beam crossing. To operate in this dense radiation environment, an upgrade of CDF's silicon vertex detector (SVX) subsystem and a corresponding upgrade of its VME-based DAQ system has been explored. Prototypes of all the Run IIb SVX DAQ components have been constructed, assembled into a test stand and operated successfully using an adapted version of CDF's network-capable DAQ software. In addition, a PCI-based DAQ system has been developed as a fast and inexpensive tool for silicon detector and DAQ component testing in the production phase. In this paper they present an overview of the Run IIb silicon DAQ upgrade, emphasizing the new features and improvements incorporated into the constituent VME boards, and discuss a PCI-based DAQ system developed to facilitate production tests.

A Fast, Wide-Range Time-to-Height Conversion System (open access)

A Fast, Wide-Range Time-to-Height Conversion System

A time-to-height conversion system was developed which is useful for measuring time intervals from 10 psec to 200 mu sec. When driven by a mercury- relay pulse generator through appropriate fixed delays, the resolution of the system, FWHM, is 6 psec, the apparent time shift with temperature is less than 2 psec/ deg C, and the integral linearity is within plus or minus 1%. The apparent time distribution through a type 58 AVP photomultiplier tube driven by a mercury-relay pulser was less than 0.3 nsec at a fixed light level equivalent to 10/sup 3/ photoelectrons per pulse. The apparent time shift was less than 0.5 nsec for variations from 10/sup 2/ to 10/sup 4/ photoelectons per pulse. (auth)

Time reversal invariance - a test in free neutron decay (open access)

Time reversal invariance - a test in free neutron decay

Time reversal invariance violation plays only a small role in the Standard Model, and the existence of a T-violating effect above the predicted level would be an indication of new physics. A sensitive probe of this symmetry in the weak interaction is the measurement of the T-violating ''D''-correlation in the decay of free neutrons. The triple-correlation D{sigma}{sub n}{center_dot}p{sub e} x p{sub v} involves three kinematic variables, the neutron spin, electron momentu, and neutrino (or proton) momentum, and changes sign under time reversal. This experiment detects the decay products of a polarized cold neutron beam with an octagonal array of scintillation and solid-state detectors. Data from first run at NIST's Cold Neutron Research Facility give a D-coefficient of -0.1 {+-} 1.3(stat.) {+-} 0.7(syst) x 10{sup -3}. This measurement has the greatest bearing on extensions to the Standard model that incorporate leptoquarks, although exotic fermion and lift-right symmetric models also allow a D as large as the present limit.
