Interview with Lorena Andrade, civil rights and labor activist from El Paso, Texas. Ms. Andrade was born in Los Angeles, California and attended the University of Minnesota, where she became involved with Chicano activism. In El Paso, she has been an advocate for labor and founded the organization La Mujer Obrera, The Working Woman, to support women affected by NAFTA.

Ida Bridgewater discusses growing up in the Stop Six Neighborhood of Fort Worth, Texas, where her parents, Garfield and Dorothy Thompson were civil rights activists. Her father graduated from I.M. Terrell High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was elected state representative of District 95 and held office for 10 years until his retirement.

Ms. Moynihan-McCoy discusses her personal history in higher education.

Audio recording of an interview with Johnnie Mae Carter, who was born in East Texas and grew up partly in College Station, Texas, Colorado, and Slaton, Texas. While living in Slaton, Carter was not allowed to attend the local high school because she is African American. Thus, she attended Dunbar High School in Lubbock, Texas. Her family later moved to Odessa, Texas. In Odessa, Carter attended Odessa College to become a nurse. She worked several years as a nurse and also volunteered and later worked for Planned Parenthood in Odessa.

Mr. Burrell was born in Turkey Creek (Liberty) in 1946. He discussed his experiences living in a segregated neighborhood and attending segregated schools. Burrell also discussed how who you knew or were affiliated with influenced your experiences during segregation. He mentioned some fights between white and Black children that occured during his childhood. Burrell was the first of his family to attend college. He was drafted into the army after dropping out of school to work following his sophomore year in college and served in Vietnam. Burrell descibed the lack of Black officers within the military structure despite a large and disproportionate amount of Black soldiers serving. He believed that it may have been attempt to "get rid" of Black folks. Burrell discussed the stigma that Vietnam veterans faced. He went back to school after leaving active duty. Burrell described benefitting from the Civil Rights Movement in terms of affirmative action in the workplace. He also described his experiences dealing with discrimination in the workplace and housing. Burrell worked as an engineer. He ultimately worked for and retired from NASA. Burrell along with his wife and others (Concerned Citizens for the Future) fought racist and discriminatory practices in the local …

This edited news footage captures a political event honoring United States Congressman Jim Wright of Fort Worth. Held at the historic Driskill Hotel in Austin, then-Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson introduces Wright to the assembled crowd, who greet Wright with a standing ovation.

This film captures a football game between the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs and the University of Texas at Austin Longhorns. (TCU players are wearing white jerseys.) The Southwest Conference match-up was played on November 18, 1961, at Texas Memorial Stadium (now known as Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium) in Austin. Although the top-ranked Longhorns make several trips to the red zone, they fail to score, ultimately losing to 24-point underdog TCU in a 0-6 upset. The shocking defeat spoiled not only the Texas’ hopes of winning its first national title but also the Heisman dreams of star players such as halfback Jimmy Saxton. Texas Head Coach Darrell K Royal, so upset about the loss, later compared the Horned Frogs to cockroaches. “It’s not what they eat and tote off,” he said, “it’s what they fall into and mess up that hurts.” TCU ended the season with a 3-5-2 record, while Texas finished 11-1 with a win over Mississippi in the 1962 Cotton Bowl Classic.

This film captures highlights from a football game between the Rice University Owls and the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs. (TCU players are wearing white jerseys.) The Southwest Conference match-up was played on November 23, 1935, at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth. While both teams put up impressive numbers on offense, the turnover margin helped shift the game in TCU’s favor. The Horned Frogs ultimately won 27-6. TCU finished the season with a 12-1 record, defeating Louisiana State University 3-2 in the Sugar Bowl on New Years Day 1936. Although the team lost to Southwest Conference Champion Southern Methodist University, TCU claims 1935 as a national championship year.

This film captures a football game between the Texas A&M University Aggies and the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs. (TCU players are wearing the darker jerseys.) The Southwest Conference match-up was played on October 17, 1959, at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth. After a scoreless first quarter, the Horned Frogs take the lead in the second, ultimately winning 39-6. As the Southwest Conference champions, TCU went on to play the Clemson Tigers in the inaugural Bluebonnet Bowl, losing 23-7. The Horned Frogs finished the season with an 8-3 record.

Shot by the staff of Congressman Jim Wright, this footage captures the aftermath of a flood in Fort Worth, most likely from 1957. In May of that year, after weeks of torrential rains across Texas, more than 4,000 people were evacuated from unprotected lowlands along local creeks and the West Fork of the Trinity River in Fort Worth. In the film, residents combat severe floodwaters, salvaging property out of their homes and evacuating by boat to higher ground. Wright also appears to survey the damage and help in relief efforts.

This film captures highlights from a football game between the Baylor University Bears and the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs. (TCU players are wearing white jerseys.) The Southwest Conference rivalry game was played on October 29, 1938, at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth.While Baylor scored an early touchdown, TCU ran away with the game, ultimately winning 39-7. TCU finished the season with an undefeated 11-0 record, outscoring their opponents 269-60. The AP Poll crowned the Horned Frogs the national champions after they defeated Carnegie Tech in the Sugar Bowl on January 2, 1939. TCU’s quarterback, Davey O’Brien, also won the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award, and Walter Camp Award—the first player in history to win all three in a single season. O’Brien was also the first Heisman winner from not only TCU but also the Southwest Conference.

In 1968, then-Vice President Hubert Humphrey won the Democratic Party’s nomination for president and embarked upon a national tour to build support for his candidacy. Included amongst the many stops he made were visits to Fort Worth and Dallas, captured in this footage. After landing at Carswell Field, Humphrey visits with several Texas politicians, including Governor of Texas John Connally and United States Congressman Jim Wright of Fort Worth. He then delivers speeches at a public rally and a campaign dinner. Next, Humphrey flies to Dallas, where he speaks at another campaign rally. First Lady Lady Bird Johnson also makes an appearance.

Roen Salinas is from Austin, Texas. He is one of the founding members of Ballet Folklorico Aztlan de Tejas, an internationally known dance troupe. In his interview, Salinas speaks about the role of the cultural arm of the Chicano movement.

Jew Don Boney, Jr. was born in 1951 in Temple. His first experience with segregation was when his mother was initally denied entry into Scott and White Hospital when she went into labor with Boney. His parents were educators and his father wrote a dissertation on the racial biases in standarized testing while pursuing a doctorate in Educational Psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Boney relocated to Austin in 1966 and attended the University of Texas at Austin in the Fall of 1969. He became involved in Black-Brown student activism at this time. After spending a few years in radio and TV, Boney worked for the Urban League and became the Chairman of the National Black United Front Chapter in Houston. He later served as a city councilman for District D and a Mayor Pro Tem. Boney dedicated three years to the Free Clarence Bradley Campaign in order to exonerate a man falsely accused of the rape and murder of a white woman in Conroe, spent time bridging African and U.S. relations, advanced economic initiatives in Africa, and secured grants to process the Mickey Leland Papers at Texas Southern University while he served as the Associate Director for …

Mrs. Stokes was born and raised in Nacogdoches. She is the daughter of Arthur Weaver, the founder of the NAACP in Nacogdoches. She then became a teacher in Washington DC and St. Louis. She returned to Nacogdoches in the late 1970s, where she worked at Head Start. Retired now, she is active in civic organizations, particularly the annual Juneteenth celebration. In her interview, Mrs. Stokes describes her childhood in Nacogdoches, the difficulties of segregation, her father's activism, and the community activism she's been involved in in Nacogdoches since her return in the 1970s.

David Willard is an educator in Beaumont, Texas. In his interview, he discussed his father's work and legacy in the desegregation process in southeast Texas, his own work in civil rights and education, and the ongoing struggles of the black community in the region.

Bryan Parras was born in 1977 in the East End, a Mexican-American enclave in Houston, TX. His parents, Jesusa Moreno and Juan Parras, played influential roles in his political consciousness. He talks about discrimination and how he has became involved in Nuestra Palabra: Latino Writers Having Their Say as well as the immigrant rights movement. Parras also discusses how the creation of Cesar E. Chavez High School right near the oil refineries in Houston sparked his involvement in the environmental justice movement. He provides an in-depth discussion of how the environmental justice movement has taken him all over the world, particularly in Canada and South American, and how through his organization, Texas Environmental Justice Advocacy Services, he has forged relations with indigenous communities as well as African-American communities.

Arnoldo De Leon was born in 1945 in Corpus Christi, Texas. His family lived in Chapman Ranch, an unincorporated community in Nueces County, south of Corpus Christi. In 1956, the De Leons and their family of ten children moved to Robstown. De Leon graduated from high school in 1962 after which he worked in the cotton fields of the area to save up for college, a job he had during summers as a child and teenager. He attended Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, but he could not afford to attend longer than a year. He joined the military in order to attend college, joining the U.S. Air Force from 1963-1967. While stationed in San Angelo, Texas, he attended Angelo State University where he obtained his B.A. in history in 1970. TCU recruited De Leon, where he obtained his M.A. and PhD in history (1974). He taught Mexican American history at Angelo State and authored or co-authored 21 books.

Interview with Lawrence and Bessie Hicks of Bryan, Texas. In their interview, the Hicks describe their experiences with racial discrimination and civil rights activism.

Interview with Rafael Torres, community leader from Laredo, Texas. In the interview, Torres discusses his family background, geography and politics in Laredo, experiences in school, participating in Teacher Corps, and activism in Crystal City.

Four co-chairs of The Border Organization (Organización Fronteriza) --a Del Rio-based group devoted to community organizing-- share their story about the group's mission and strategies. The interviewees talked about how they joined -- Sandra Fuentes and Elvira Castro are veterans from the organization and have been involved in numerous fights for local government accountability, while JoElda Hinojosa and Beatriz Arizpe joined recently when the group helped organize food service workers from the San Felipe Del Rio school district. Among the issues discussed were geographic disparities in the quality of public services and how race and gender affect local activism in Del Rio.
