Oral History Interview with Albert Jackson, March 13, 2014
The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Albert Jackson. Jackson was born in 1924. At age 16, he joined the US Navy and underwent boot training at the Naval Training Center in Chicago. Upon graduation, he was assigned to USS Texas (BB-35) as a member of Gun Fire Control. Later, he was transferred to an LST.

Oral History Interview with Wayne Brooks, September 8, 2014
The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Wayne Brooks. Brooks joined the Army Air Corps in 1941. He completed flight school and additional training at Fort Sumner and served as a second lieutenant flight instructor in Roswell, New Mexico. He flew Beechcraft and Cessna aircraft. He was discharged in 1946.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Robert Alma. Alma went into the Army Air Forces in March 1943 and trained in Florida before training as an engine mechanic. He went overseas in March, 1946 to Germany. There he repaired aircraft engines.

Oral History Interview with Nolan Donop, March 11, 2014
The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Nolan Donop. Donop joined the Army and eventually shipped out to Italy, where he volunteered to cook before being assigned to the 34th Infantry Divivsion and making his way to northern Italy to the Apennine Mountains. Donop recalls a few anecdotes from his combat experiences.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Gerald Benishek. Benishek was drafted into the Army Air Forces in June 1942 and trained at Jefferson Barracks. From there, he went to mechanics school in Nebraska. Once overseas, he went to New Guinea and then to Biak where he worked on C-47 and C-54 engines. When the war ended, Benishek was home in time for Christmas.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Walter Neumann. Neumann joined the Navy in April, 1944 and trained at Great Lakes. He attended radio school before reporting aboard YMS-231. They were just getting underway in the Pacific when the war ended. They shaped course for Japan to work minesweeping duties during the occupation. He was discharged I n1947 but stayed in the active reserves.

Oral History Interview with Billy Dennard, October 24, 2014
The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Billy Dennard. Dennard was drafted into the Navy in September, 1944 and trained at San Diego before reporting aboard the USS Franklin (CV-13). He was aboard when a Japanese plane attacked the ship 50 miles off the coast of Japan in March, 1945. Dennard was rescued from below decks and stayed aboard the ship all the way back to New York. Dennard was discharged in June, 1946.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Orlan Scott. Scott joined the Navy in 1944. He completed amphibious force training. Scott served aboard USS Texas (BB-35) beginning in March of 1945, participating in the Battle of Okinawa. He returned to the US and received a discharge in May of 1946.

Oral History Interview with Jonah Peterson, November 18, 2014
The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Jonah Peterson. Peterson was drafted into the Navy in 1943. He finished signal school in October and was assigned to the USS Cascade (AD-16), a destroyer tender. He was there at Ulithi for a while before transferring to the USS Argonne (AG-31) in time for the invasion of the Philippines. Peterson returned to the US in December and was discharged in early 1946.

He served in the engine room aboard tankers and was in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans during WWII. The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Douglas R Smith. Smith joined the Army Air Forces in 1943. He served as a cryptographer, coding and decoding secret military messages in the Pacific, as the US prepared to invade Japan. After the war ended, Smith was stationed in Hokkaido, Japan. He received his discharge in late 1945.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with John M Olsen. Olsen joined a reserve program with the Army Air Forces in February of 1944. In mid-1945, he deployed to the Philippines and joined a Recovered Personnel Detachment, processing allied prisoners of war. He transferred to Japan, continuing his work. Olsen returned to the US and received his discharge in December of 1946.

Oral History Interview with Robert Scheumann, February 19, 2014
The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Robert Scheumann. Scheumann was drafted into the Army in October 1942. After training he was assigned to the 323rd Field Artillery as part of the 83rd Infantry Division. He went overseas to England in April, 1944, then to Normandy on 12 June. He was wounded and evacuated to England in early July. When he returned to France he was assigned to drive a radio repair truck. He returned to the US in November 1945.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Everett Scarr. Scarr joined the Navy in 1944. He served with the deck force aboard the USS Black (DD-666). He recalls his experiences through the battles of Leyte and Okinawa, and serving with occupation forces in Japan after the war. Scarr returned to the US and received his discharge in June of 1946.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Chris Hutchinson. Hutchinson joined the Navy Women's Reserve in 1944 and trained at Hunter College in the Bronx. Her first assignment was in communcations in Wahsington DC until the Navy realied she was not old enough to serve in the WAVES. She was discharged, but reenlisted in MArch 1945 when she was old enough and went to San Diego. She worked in the disbursing office. She also clerked in an office at Great Lakes training center.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Douglas Hubbard, Jr. Hubbard was born on 1 April 1945. He joined the Naval Intelligence Command as a special agent of the Naval Investigative Service in March of 1968. He volunteered for service in Vietnam for 36 months. He later accepted an appointment as a training officer for the British South Africa police in Rhodesia. Additionally, Hubbard worked in security, mining and exploration industries. He has lived and worked extensively in Asia, Australia and Africa. His father, Doug Hubbard, was instrumental in establishing the National Museum of the Pacific War.

Oral History Interview with Gilbert Esensee, March 25, 2014
The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Gilbert Esensee. Esensee was born in Fredericksburg, Texas, on 6 August 1925, into a family of eight children. In 1944, he joined the Army and took basic training at Camp Roberts, California. He was then sent to La Havre, France, where he joined the 29th Infantry Division, 175th Infantry Regiment. Esensee was involved in combat action along the Roer River, where he was wounded. He also tells of German soldiers swimming the Elbe River, to avoid capture by Russian troops.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Dorthy Hannemann. Hannemann, nee Henke, was born in Fredericksburg, Texas on 12 August 1923. She is fourth generation of her family who settled in Fredericksburg. She shares details of her family history. She graduated from high school in 1941, then trained as a nurse at Sealy Hospital in Galveston, Texas. After graduating in September of 1944, she married Hans Hannemann. She speaks about life in Fredericksburg during wartime. Hans did not serve in the war. Dorthy passed away in June of 2017.

Oral History Interview with Eduardo Cajiuat, August 1, 2014
The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Eduardo Cajiuat. Cajiuat was a student in Manila when the Japanese invaded. He recalls being in the city while it was occupied by the Japanese and some of the food shortages and some of the economic repercussions. Cajiuat had an older brother who served as a guerrilla and a sister who spied on the Japanese. He also recalls the Americans liberating the city. Cajiuat became a minister and emigrated to the United States in 1964.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Kenneth Matthews. Matthews joined the Marine Corps in 1943 and trained at Parris Island. Then he went to Quantico and earned a commission. He was assigned to the regimental intelligence section of the 1st Marines, 1st marine Division and went to Okinawa. After the war, Matthews went to China briefly before returning to the US and being discharged.

Oral History Interview with Virgil Haley, March 12, 2014
The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Virgil Haley. Haley joined the Navy in June 1944 and trained at San Diego. After training as a quartermaster and signalman, Haley joined the USS Williams (DE-372). His job aboard ship was to steer and work in the chart room. The Williams provided escort duty in the New Guinea and the Solomon Islands area. He also describes being caught in a typhoon. Haley returned to the US and was discharged in June, 1946.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Howard Opheim. Opheim joined the Army Air Forces in August, 1942. He qualified for pilot training. He went overseas to England in November, 1944. He recalls ferrying troops and supplies to the continent during the Battle of the Bulge and making a combat drop over the Rhine River area. When the war ended in Europe, Opheim went to Brazil to ferry troops back to the US to prepare for the invasion of Japan.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Richard Curts. Curts joined the Army in September, 1943 and trained in Oklahoma. Then he was assigned to the 252nd Engineer Combat Battalion. He landed in France in September, 1944. His unit built bridges and cleared mines from France to Belgium. He was on the front lines at the Battle of the Bulge. His unit was on its way to the Pacific when the war ended. Curts went home and was discharged in May, 1946.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Amos McGinnis. McGinnis was working in a factory when he was drafted into the Army in December, 1942. He trained as a combat engineer and went to England before heading out for Normandy five days after D-Day. McGinnis shares several anecdotes about his experiences building bridges across Europe. He was in Germany when the war ended and was discharged in December, 1945.
