Audio cassette from The Black Academy of Arts and Letters recorded during the 20th Annual Christmas/Kwanzaa Concert held at the Naomi Bruton Theatre on December 15th, 2012. The audio tape includes one track of audio of the performance featuring students from DISD high schools and the Townview Big D Band.

Chongpu Chongloi describes the marriage system of the Saihriem as practiced by their traditional forefathers. He is a native speaker of Saihriem from Noxa Tila, Cachar District, Assam, around 85 years old at the time of recording.

Hoihte Saihrem, aged 80, is a female speaker of Saihriem. She tells the story of a beautiful lady called Rengchonghoi and her seven brothers.

C. Hawa tells the traditional narrative 'Chemtatepu' about animals in Hindi, translating from the original Saihriem. He is from Bahbahar village, Cachar District, Assam, around 52 years old at the time of recording.

Recording of Wazir Abbas telling the History of Polo in the Nagar dialect. Abbas claims that the modern version of Polo on horses originated in Nagar. He then tells of a battle between the people of Nagar and Hunza.

Hoihte Saihriem, aged 64, is a female speaker from Bahbahar village of Cachar district of Assam. She tells the story of a wicked lady who killed the wife of Sapinthei and later married her father. This wicked lady had a daughter named Mairangkoh. Together, they tortured Sapinthei and managed to kill her after she was married to a king.

Hoihte Saihriem tells the story of Ralngam. In this story, Ralngam befriends a tiger, and they compete and eat food together. Ralngam learns magic from the tiger. She is a female Saihriem speaker from the Barak Valley (currently living in Bahbahar), around 80 years old at the time of recording. She is also a speaker of Bengali.

Recording of Bano reciting “Bilbal Wazir” in the Hunza dialect. This is a popular story about Minister Bilbal, who was once a worker, and spent his money before he came home t his wife. He then proves his wisdom by not doing what he was told, and became a minister.

Recording of Ali Raza reciting “Aqale Gus” in the Nagar dialect of Burushaski. In this popular story a prince travels to search for the answer of his father’s troubles. In his travels he meets an old man whom he irritates, but lets the prince stay at his house overnight. The old man’s daughter is great at interpreting problems, and they are married, and she returns to the kingdom to aid the King.

Recording of Bano reciting “Baqti Jamal ke Alqash,” in the Hunza dialect. This popular story tells a tale of Baqti Jamal and Alqash, two friends that grew old together. One day on a picnic, Baqti Jamal found a golden treasure, and decided to share it with Alqash, but Alqash was greedy, and killed Baqti Jamal to keep the gold to himself. One day Alqash, now a wealthy minister to the king, needed help deciphering dreams, called upon Baqti Jamal’s son Abu Zare Jamhur, who held a book of prophecies

Recording of Ibrahim reciting “The Sea Sand Pot” in the Nagar dialect of Burushaski. In this popular story a King tells all of his subjects to kill their old parents, but an obedient son hides his father in a trench. Afterward, the King orders the subjects to make a sea sand pot, or a sand chidin, which is a large iron pot used to make food for a thousand people for festivals. None of the villagers knew how, so they approached the hidden father, who told them that it was an impossible task. They told the King that the task was accomplished, but this wisdom proved to the King that an elderly person was saved.
