Cross-Pollinating Culturally Sustaining Pedagogies and Systemic Functional Linguistics in English as a Second Language (ESL) Classrooms
This exploratory case study research was conducted with a view to exploring how teachers teaching emergent bilingual students in ESL programs can enact the principles of culturally sustaining systematic functional linguistics (CS SFL), such as critical centering, historicizing, curricularizing, teaching and learning cycle (TLC), and semantic waving in their classrooms. Two middle school teachers participated in the study and used CS SFL principles to teach their emergent bilingual students. I gathered data for the study through non-participatory observations, semi-structured interviews, informal talks with the teachers, usually right after their classes, and artifacts from teachers and students. The thematic analysis of the data demonstrated that teachers could recognize their students' ways of knowing and being by (a) translanguaging between English and Spanish seamlessly in their classrooms; (b) centering their students' lifeways, prior knowledge, and lived experiences by making them the parts of their curricula; (c) using TLC for creating dialogic interactions between teachers and students and among students; (d) positioning their students through strength perspectives; and (e) using multimodal and multi-semiotic means of communication so that their students can understand their content area knowledge and express their ideas even if their English language is emerging. FruitPAL: An IoT-Enabled Framework for Automatic Monitoring of Fruit Consumption in Smart Healthcare
This research proposes FruitPAL and FruitPAL 2.0. They are full automatic devices that can detect fruit consumption to reduce the risk of disease. Allergies to fruits can seriously impair the immune system. A novel device (FruitPAL) detecting fruit that can cause allergies is proposed in this thesis. The device can detect fifteen types of fruit and alert the caregiver when an allergic reaction may have happened. The YOLOv8 model is employed to enhance accuracy and response time in detecting dangers. The notification will be transmitted to the mobile device through the cloud, as it is a commonly utilized medium. The proposed device can detect the fruit with an overall precision of 86%. FruitPAL 2.0 is envisioned as a device that encourages people to consume fruit. Fruits contain a variety of essential nutrients that contribute to the general health of the human body. FruitPAL 2.0 is capable of analyzing the consumed fruit and then determining its nutritional value. FruitPAL 2.0 has been trained on YOLOv5 V6.0. Kinetics and Atmospheric Chemistry Studies of Halogenated Species
Quantitative information about halogenated hydrocarbons is important for understanding their impact on atmospheric ozone chemistry and climate change, their regulation, and the devising of improved substitutes. The Montreal Protocol aimed to regulate the utilization and manufacturing of hydrochlorofluorocarbon compounds (HCFCs), contributing to ozone layer depletion. The 2016 Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol agreement, Annex C listed 274 HCFCs. Only 16 of them have been measured experimentally. The rest were set to zero by default. These reported global warming potentials (GWPs) play a crucial role in formulating policies for gradually reducing the usage and production of HCFCs to prevent atmospheric impact. Here we are studying 1-chloro-1-fluoro-ethane (CH3CHFCl) as a test of past theory. There are no prior experimental measurements of the reactivity of CH3CHFCl with hydroxyl (OH) radicals, which primarily determines its atmospheric lifetime, nor of its infrared (IR) spectrum. Saturated hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) are non-ozone depleting substitutes for chlorofluorocarbons deprecated under the 1987 Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, but they exhibit high global warming potentials (GWPs) and the Kigali Amendment adopted in 2016 outlines their phase down. Archive Activism: Memoir of a "Uniquely Nasty" Journey

Archive Activism is a memoir of activism rooted in a new way to converse with history—by rescuing it. Archive activists discover documents and other important materials often classified, “gone missing,” or sealed that somehow escaped the fireplace or shredder. It is an approach to LGBTQ advocacy and policy activism based on citizen archivery and original archival research to effect social change. Research=Activism is the formula growing out of Charles Francis’s personal story as a gay Texan born and raised during the 1950s and 1960s in Dallas. The rescues range in time and place from Francis’s first encounter with a raucous, near-violent religious demonstration in Fort Worth to attics loaded with forgotten historic treasures of LGBTQ pioneers. Archive Activism tells how Francis helped Governor George W. Bush achieve his dream of becoming president in 2000 by reaching out to gay and lesbian supporters, the first time a Republican candidate for president formally met with gay and lesbian Americans. This inspired Francis to engage with deleted LGBTQ history by forming a historical society with an edge, a new Mattachine Society of Washington, DC. Detection and Classification of Cancer and Other Noncommunicable Diseases Using Neural Network Models
Here, we show that training with multiple noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) is both feasible and beneficial to modeling this class of diseases. We first use data from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) to train a pan cancer model, and then characterize the information the model has learned about the cancers. In doing this we show that the model has learned concepts that are relevant to the task of cancer classification. We also test the model on datasets derived independently of the TCGA cohort and show that the model is robust to data outside of its training distribution such as precancerous legions and metastatic samples. We then utilize the cancer model as the basis of a transfer learning study where we retrain it on other, non-cancer NCDs. In doing so we show that NCDs with very differing underlying biology contain extractible information relevant to each other allowing for a broader model of NCDs to be developed with existing datasets. We then test the importance of the samples source tissue in the model and find that the NCD class and tissue source may not be independent in our model. The Question Concerning Endocrinology: Judith Butler's Gender Theory and Transgender Hormone Therapy
For such a vexing topic as gender identity, this dissertation asks a rather straightforward question: If gender identity is—as Judith Butler has asserted—socially constructed and discursively mediated, then why does transgender hormone therapy (THT) work? This is the question concerning endocrinology that I ask Butler, and their answer is, if requiring of delicate assessment and interpretation, clear: it doesn't. Butler's work reveals an admonishing view that the efficacity of THT is due to placebo effect, in turn brought on by the bewitchment of the trans* who seeks medical transition. In a logic similar to sin and salvation, if only the trans* had not believed in gender dysphoria, then there would be no (putative) efficacity to THT whatsoever. With our answer, we begin a perilous adventure of discovering just why such a preeminent gender theorist (and trans* themselves) with no experience of gender dysphoria, and no desire to medically transition, would say this. We examine Butler's gender theory, their concept of desire, their views on the self, on transsexuality, their rarely discussed philosophies of science and nature, and their dearth of citations of transsexual voices. Molecular signatures in the progression of COVID-19 severity
Authors of the article discuss that to uncover genes and pathways involved in the differential clinical manifestations of COVID-19 they developed a novel gene co-expression network-based pipeline that uses gene expression obtained from different SARS-CoV-2 infected human tissues.
