Methods for analyzing panel studies of acute health effects of air pollution. Technical report No. 25 (open access)

Methods for analyzing panel studies of acute health effects of air pollution. Technical report No. 25

New methods are presented for analyzing repeated binary health measurements of individuals exposed to varying levels of air pollution. The methods involve a separate logistic regression of response against environmental covariates for each individual under study. Parameters reflecting individual susceptibility to pollutants and weather are estimated using the regression techniques developed by Cox. The parameters are then combined over the individuals in the study to obtain summary estimates of environmental effects. The approach does not require the independence of successive health measurements. It is illustrated with data on asthma and air pollution in the Los Angeles area. A special case of the approach can be adapted to continuous health measurements; the details of this procedure are outlined in an appendix.

Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Psychological Intervention (open access)

Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Psychological Intervention

A psychological intervention involving relaxation training and biofeedback training for the control of peripheral skin temperature was investigated in this study with 27 female rheumatoid arthritics as participants. Based on analysis of the temperature data, it was concluded that the biofeedback response was not learned. From electromyographic data, it was concluded that participants did learn to relax. The hypothesis that the two treatment components would have beneficial effects on the physical, functional, and psychological aspects of rheumatoid arthritis was answered partially. No differential effects as a function of biofeedback training were found as the data for the temperature increase and temperature decrease groups were statistically combined in multiple analyses of variance for repeated measures. Although no differential effects were obtained, numerous positive changes were found. Correlated with the relaxation training were decreases in reported subjective units of discomfort, percentage of time hurting, percentage of body hurting, and general severity of pain. Improved sleep patterns were reported as was increased performance of activities of daily living. Reductions were also found in psychological tension, and in the amount of time mood was influenced by the disease. Shifts were not found in imagery, locus of control, and other psychological dimensions. Constitutional improvements were …

Desulfurization of coal model compounds and coal liquids. (open access)

Desulfurization of coal model compounds and coal liquids.

Most US coals contain sulfur concentrations that prevent their being burned without some form of sulfur removal. Current coal-cleaning technology can only remove the fairly reactive pyritic (inorganic) and aliphatic (organic) sulfur. A process which removes the more refractory hetero-aromatic sulfur could substantially increase the amount of coal reserves amenable to chemical cleaning. Sodium metal dispersions convert refractor model compounds into lighter desulfurized products and non-volatile sulfur-rich char. When treated with sodium, coal-derived solids show substantial desulfurization. The same treatment applied to coal-derived liquids, when combined with vacuum distillation of the reaction product, yields a desulfurized light distillate, an increase in absolute amount of distillate, and retention of sulfur in the vacuum residue. The presence of sodium in the residue allows fixation of the residual sulfur as Na/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ upon combustion, eliminating production of SO/sub 2/ in the flue gas. Intimate contacting of sodium salts with high sulfur coal also fixes 97 to 99% of the sulfur as Na/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ upon combustion. This technique takes advantage of the high energy available for carbon-sulfur bond cleavage during combustion and the reaction of SO/sub 2/ to form Na/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ to provide an inexpensive method for complete coal desulfurization.
