Edward Larrabee Barnes's Dallas Museum of Art: An Architectural Development Study (open access)

Edward Larrabee Barnes's Dallas Museum of Art: An Architectural Development Study

This study examines the development of Edward Larrabee Barnes's design concepts for the Dallas Museum of Art, from preliminary concepts and program statements by Director Harry Parker and Dallas Museum trustees, through initial planning and architect selection, to site selection, the Program and Space Study, Barnes's early conceptual plans, and his Dallas Arts District master planning. Influences on Barnes's work and his career development leading to the Dallas commission, his most ambitious museum to date, are examined. Discussion and documentation of design development is based on schematic studies, presentation drawings, models, and trustees' minutes. Design changes during construction and all phases of expansion planning are also discussed. The conclusion summarizes historical influences on the design and Barnes's fulfillment of program concepts.

[Drawing of a Building]

Photograph of a half-completed drawing of a building, pinned to a board. The drawing, meticulously detailed, captures the architectural elements of the structure, despite being incomplete. The untouched portion of the paper creates a stark contrast to the part already filled with lines and shadings. The board, serving as a canvas for this work-in-progress, adds an informal, creative backdrop to the image.

In the third image the page has two architectural drawings of the interior of a theater on it. The lines are measurements and show the angles of the interior of the "Téatre de Turin." In the fourth and fifth images the pages have a diagram of the exterior and interior of a building drawn out on them with a measurement. Underneath is a short description that reads "Salles de Spectacles, Plan Géométrique en travers et la Vue du Parquet La Couronne." The pages in the sixth image have a central diagram and two illustrations on them. The diagram is of mechanisms within theaters and the two smaller illustrations are of details often seen within theaters in the upper …
