Fluvial Architecture of the Lower Cretaceous Lakota Formation, Southwestern Flank of the Black Hills Uplift, South Dakota

From introduction This report describes large-scale depositional units referred to as architectural elements, interpreted from outcrops of three distinct fluvial sandstone units of the Lakota Formation in the southwestern Black Hills area of Custer and Fall River Counties, South Dakota. These fluvial deposits formed near the end of an episode of continental deposition that began when the Jurassic Sundance sea regressed from the region and ended when the Early Cretaceous Skull Creek sea encroached from the north in Albian time.

Report on HAPO Unitized Microfilm Drawing System (open access)

Report on HAPO Unitized Microfilm Drawing System

This report is being submitted to provide information and data on the planning and installation of a new mechanized drawing system which utilizes a new drawing index system and a 35mm microfilm image in a standard IBM card. The communication of engineering information to date has been primarily the full size contact print produced by exposing and developing light sensitive material. This method produces legible copies; but, it has the following disadvantages : (a) the original drawings are fragile, and become dirty and worn through excessive use and handling; (b) the sensitized paper has a limited shelf life; (c) the reproduction cycle is slow because it requires hand feeding and adjustment of the reproduction machine to the condition of the original; (d) the prints are large and unwieldy to handle as working documents; and (e) the filling of originals and copies is slow and expensive. In addition, providing reference prints which are accessible to engineering personnel in the widely separated areas from a central file and reproduction facility is slow, expensive and time consuming.

A Proposal for the Mc2 Isochronous Cyclotron: A General Purpose High-Intensity 810-MeV Proton Accelerator (open access)

A Proposal for the Mc2 Isochronous Cyclotron: A General Purpose High-Intensity 810-MeV Proton Accelerator

Abstract: "The Oak Ridge National Laboratory proposes to build an isochronous eight-sector proton cyclotron to provide an extracted beam in excess of 100 A at 810 MeV. The primary proton beam and the secondary meson and neutron beams will be used to investigate nuclear structure, and the interactions between elementary particles. Biomedical and Space-oriented research programs are also planned. Shielded research areas and an extensive beam transport and analysis system are provided. Theoretical and experimental studies have shown that the Mc2 Cyclotron is a practical concept; high extraction efficiencies can be obtained, and the residual radiation problems are manageable. The project would require less than seven years to complete, and would cost about $43,000,000."
