Measurements and evaluation of building response to ground motion at various stages of construction (open access)

Measurements and evaluation of building response to ground motion at various stages of construction

Architectural elements contribute significantly to the total seismic response of high-rise frame buildings. Although the characteristics of ground motion have considerable effect on the response of buildings, architectural elements increase the stiffness of the total system and reduce its period. The measurements also showed that partition influence is reduced over a period of time, as indicated by the lengthening of periods. At low levels of motion where the partitions contribute lateral stiffness to the system, they carry a proportional amount of the total lateral load and add sizable energy-absorbing capacity to the system. However, when the partitions are removed, the load formerly carried by the partitions is again transferred to the structural system. Because of the different response mode shapes of the models, the interstory drift at the first floor for the same roof displacement can vary significantly among models. In the models studied, the building without partitions at the first floor had the largest interstory drift.

Synchrotron radiation research facility conceptual design report (open access)

Synchrotron radiation research facility conceptual design report

A report is presented to define, in general outline, the extent and proportions, the type of construction, the schedule for accomplishment, and the estimated cost for a new Synchrotron Radiation Facility, as proposed to the Energy Research and Development Administration by the Brookhaven National Laboratory. The report is concerned only indirectly with the scientific and technological justification for undertaking this project; the latter is addressed explicitly in separate documents. The report does consider user requirements, however, in order to establish a basis for design development. Preliminary drawings, outline specifications, estimated cost data, and other descriptive material are included as supporting documentation on the current status of the project in this preconstruction phase.

Methodology for the design of urban transportation interface facilities. Final technical report, January 1976--December 1976 (open access)

Methodology for the design of urban transportation interface facilities. Final technical report, January 1976--December 1976

Procedures and techniques are described which determine measures of the performance of transit station designs. Categories of measures are defined according to the manner by which they are treated in the design process; as a result of policy, or as measures of performance and economic efficiency. Policy items considered include concessions, advertising, personal care facilities, telephones, acoustics, construction materials, design flexibility, parking facilities, and provisions for the handicapped. Performance measures are associated with passenger processing, passenger orientation, the physical environment safety, and security. The policy and performance considerations along with cost factors are used to specify a systematic transit interchange facility design methodology that is recommended to practitioners. Comprehansive descriptions of appropriate analytical techniques for the evaluation of transit station designs are provided in the appendices to the report.

General Electric Company design review manual, commercial buildings. National Solar Demonstration Program

This manual is intended to serve as a guide to the Solar Energy Division of ERDA for preparing instructions for and evaluating the proposals resulting from the issuance of Program Opportunity Notices (PON's) for Commercial Buildings. The manual is meant to amplify Program Opportunity Notice DSE-75-2, with respect to site, building, and system selection and evaluation. The manual contains two major sections, one addressing the project concept and the other the design features. The project concept section provides for a description and evaluation of the site, the commercial building, the system application, the system predicted performance, and the long term economics of the application. The projects could be screened using the information from this section alone. Projects that remain acceptable can be further evaluated through design considerations as outlined in the second section. Measurement and evaluation of high-rise building response to ground motion generated by underground nuclear explosions (open access)

Measurement and evaluation of high-rise building response to ground motion generated by underground nuclear explosions

As part of the structural response research program being conducted for ERDA, the response behavior of high-rise buildings in Las Vegas, Nevada, due to ground motion caused by underground nuclear explosions (UNEs) at the Nevada Test Site (NTS) has been measured for the past 12 years. Results obtained include variation in dynamic response properties as a function of amplitude of motion, influence of nonstructural partitions in the building response, and comparison of calculated and measured response. These data for three reinforced concrete high- rise buildings, all designed as moment-resisting space frames are presented. (auth)

Coal Technology Program progress report, March 1976 (open access)

Coal Technology Program progress report, March 1976

Shakedown tests of the bench-scale hydrocarbonization system were successfully completed. Wyodak coal was fed to the reactor at a rate of 9.9 lb/hr where it was hydrocarbonized at 1050/sup 0/F under 20-atm hydrogen pressure. Laboratory results including settling tests, bench-scale settling tests, and sample ageing tests were continued. Two of ten compounds tested with the laboratory-scale apparatus were effective in increasing settling rates of solids in Solvent Refined Coal unfiltered oil, but bench-scale tests failed to show any improvements in the settling rate over the untreated SRC-UFO. Analytical chemistry efforts involved the removal and concentration of organic components in by-product waters from fossil fuel conversion processes. A sephadex gel is being used to achieve hydrophilic-lipophilic separations in organic mixtures as a step in the analysis of fossil fuel related materials. Engineering Evaluations of the Synthiol and Hydrocarbonization Processes continued with the Synthiol process flow diagrams, heat and material balances, and utilities requirements being completed. Inspection techniques were developed for wear- and process-resistant coatings. Orders were placed for the Incoloy 800 tubing and a smaller quantity of Inconel 600 tubing for the tube matrix in the coal-fueled MIUS fluidized bed. An engineering feasibility review of General Atomic's proposal to ERDA for …
