A Proposal for the Mc2 Isochronous Cyclotron: A General Purpose High-Intensity 810-MeV Proton Accelerator
Abstract: "The Oak Ridge National Laboratory proposes to build an isochronous eight-sector proton cyclotron to provide an extracted beam in excess of 100 A at 810 MeV. The primary proton beam and the secondary meson and neutron beams will be used to investigate nuclear structure, and the interactions between elementary particles. Biomedical and Space-oriented research programs are also planned. Shielded research areas and an extensive beam transport and analysis system are provided. Theoretical and experimental studies have shown that the Mc2 Cyclotron is a practical concept; high extraction efficiencies can be obtained, and the residual radiation problems are manageable. The project would require less than seven years to complete, and would cost about $43,000,000."

SUMMARY REPORT OF DESIGN CRITERIA FOR THE LIQUID METAL PACKAGE LOOPS' HOT CELL FACILITY AND HANDLING SYSTEM AT THE ADVANCED TEST REACTOR
S>Criteria work performed, prior to the termination of work on the package concept, for the liquid metal loop facilities for the Advanced Test Reactor is described. Nuclear criteria were determined for the thermal neutron filter and extended core combination in conjunction with the reference test specimen for the Fast Flux Loop. The conceptual design of the thermal loop is discussed, including the in-core section, sodium-to-helium heat exchanger, helium- to-reactor water heat exchanger, pump motor and associated bearing design requirements, preliminary shielding requirements, control system requirements, and electrical heaters within tue permissible space envelope. As the criteria work progressed it was determined that despite the accomplishments, not all the program requirements could be satisfied. (M.C.G.)

Summary Report of Design Criteria for a Thermal Flux Liquid Metal Package Loop in the Advanced Test Reactor
Results of the design criteria work performed prior to the termination of work on the package concept for the liquid metal loop facilities for the Advanced Test Reactor are summarized. Based on the results of the criteria studies, it was concluded that achievement of the design objectives could not be predicted with any high degree of confidence when utilizing the package loop concept based on the design philosophy of the PW-19 loop. The characteristics of the loop are given along with design and development accomplishments for associated equipment. (N.W.R.)

The Ornl Gcr-3, a 750-MW(e) Gas-Cooled Clad-Fuel Reactor Power Plant. A Joint Design Study
ABS>An advanced, gas-cooled, clad-fuel reactor power plant to generate 750 Mw of electricity was designed as a study of the potential capability of that system. The graphitemoderated reactor generates 1908 Mw of heat in 1062 fuel channels 21 ft long for a power density of 5.5 kw/liter. Gas temperatures entering and leaving the reactor are 574 and 1150 deg F, respectively, operating at 420 psia. Steam at 2415 psia and 950 deg F with reheat to 1000 deg F drives a 763-Mw(e) turbogenerator and also four 31,000-hp blower drive turbines and the boiler feed pumps. Net thermal efficiency of the plant is 39.4%. Estimated direct cost of construction is 0,267,000, or 7 per kilowatt net electric output. Fuel-cycle costs at 20,000 Mwd per metric ton of uranium are 1.46 mills/ kwhr, operating and maintenance costs are 0.39 mill, and fixed charges range from 1.80 to 4.65 mills, depending on method of financing. Total power generation costs at an 80% load factor range from 3.65 to 6.50 mills/kwhr. (auth)
