Radiation emergency response in Illinois, Alabama, and Texas (open access)

Radiation emergency response in Illinois, Alabama, and Texas

The objective of this study was to examine state radiation emergency response and to locate any areas of emergency planning in need of improvement. This report briefly presents a summary of laws and defining documents governing radiation emergency response, describes the existing and projected need for such response, and presents the authors' analyses of the evolution of state response plans and their application to radiation incidents. Three states' programs are discussed in detail: Illinois, Alabama, and Texas. These states were selected because they have quite different emergency-response programs. Therefore, these state programs provide a wide variety of approaches to state radiation emergency response.

A History of the Texas Electric Railway, 1917-1955 (open access)

A History of the Texas Electric Railway, 1917-1955

This is an economic and social history of the Texas Electric Railway, which operated three interurban lines branching out of Dallas. The railway operated from 1917 until 1948, although the company was not dissolved until 1955. Of necessity, the study is based on primary source materials, including railway pamphlets, trade journals such as the Electric Rai Journal, personal interviews, Texas and United States Government documents and publications, and newspapers. Unfortunately, original financial records of the company no longer exist; therefore, financial information comes from Moody's Manual of Investments, Public Utilities.

Coal and energy: a southern perspective. Regional characterization report for the National Coal Utilization Assessment (open access)

Coal and energy: a southern perspective. Regional characterization report for the National Coal Utilization Assessment

This publication is the first of several reports to be produced for the National Coal Utilization Assessment, a program sponsored by the Assistant Administrator for Environment and Safety through the Division of Technology Overview of ERDA. The purpose of the report is to present the state and regional perspective on energy-related issues, especially those concerning coal production and utilization for 12 southern states. This report compiles information on the present status of: (1) state government infrastructure that deals with energy problems; (2) the balance between energy consumption and energy production; (3) the distribution of proved reserves of various mineral energy resources; (4) the major characteristics of the population; (5) the important features of the environment; and (6) the major constraints to increased coal production and utilization as perceived by the states and regional agencies. Many energy-related characteristics described vary significantly from state to state within the region. Regional and national generalizations obscure these important local variations. The report provides the state and regional perspective on energy issues so that these issues may be considered objectively and incorporated into the National Coal Utilization Assessment. This Assessment is designed to provide useful outputs for national, regional, and local energy planners.

Identification of energy and environmental issues in the South: views of officials from selected state agencies (open access)

Identification of energy and environmental issues in the South: views of officials from selected state agencies

This report is a compilation of energy and environmental issues identified by state and regional agencies in 14 southern states. The issues will be considered for inclusion in future energy technology assessments being planned by the Office of Technology Impacts, Department of Energy. In order to ensure that the planned assessments will be useful to state and regional agencies as well as to the Federal sponsoring agencies, ORNL has contacted energy and environmental agencies in the southern region and solicited their input into the planning of these assessments. In all, 166 persons representing 65 state and regional agencies in 14 states were visited by ORNL personnel in order to collect information for this report. This report contains a listing of selected issues that might be included in planned national assessments for coal, petroleum and natural gas, nuclear, geothermal/geopressure, and solar energy. The issues identified are not intended to be exhaustive. Rather they represent a cross section of current key issues identified by representatives of energy and environmental agencies contacted in the region.

Regional Issue Identification and Assessment (RIIA): an analysis of the Mid-Range Projection Series C Scenario. Executive summary for Federal Region IV (open access)

Regional Issue Identification and Assessment (RIIA): an analysis of the Mid-Range Projection Series C Scenario. Executive summary for Federal Region IV

The Department of Energy (DOE) has hypothesized a number of alternate energy futures as part of its energy planning and analysis programs. In this report, which is part of DOE's Regional Issue Identification and Assessment (RIIA) Program, Oak Ridge National Laboratory examines how a proposed energy future called the Mid-Range Projection Series C Scenario would affect Federal Region IV (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee). This scenario, to be called the Series C Scenario, assumes a medium supply and a medium demand for fuel through 1990, and it incorporates the fuel switching provisions of the Energy Supply and Environmental Coordination Act. The report portrays the major regional environmental, human health and safety, socioeconomic, and institutional effects that might result from the implementation of the Series C Scenario.
