From preface: The present publication is the first contribution to a research on the physical constants of rocks; the experiments of which are to follow a general plan devised by Mr. Clarence King, former Director of the U. S. Geological Survey.

From outline: This paper, after discussing general principles connected with the study and description of the Tertiary or Cenozoic rocks and fossils contained in them, takes up the Neocene deposits of the United States in particular. A chapter is devoted to a summary of what is known in regard to the Neocene of the eastern coast of the United States, each State in geographical order being separately considered, beginning at the north.

From outline: The aim of this paper is to review the progress of our knowledge concerning a well defined system of rocks on'the Atlantic border, named the Newark system; to summarize the present state of information concerning it, and to discuss the bearing that its study has on principles of correlation.

From Introduction: "Responding to the imperative need for increasing to the utmost the petroleum supply of the United States, the Geological Survey, since we entered the war, has largely concentrated its investigations of oil fields in the most promising undeveloped territory, such as Wyoming and the midcontinent-Texas region, and especially in the Osage Reservation in Oklahoma. This report is therefore issued to supply an evident need for geologic information regarding the Osage lands. In the separate papers the most practical and immediately available conclusions reached by geologists as to the structure and oil prospects in the townships already examined are published for the immediate use of the oil man."

Butterfield, and was published as Bulletin 13 of the United States Geological Survey in 1885. From abstract: The San Juan country includes an area of about 3,800 square miles east of the Colorado River in San Juan County, southeastern Utah. This paper is based on reconnaissance geographic and geologic surveys made in 1910, 1915, 1925, and 1927-29.

Abstract: A brief sketch of the stratigraphy of the Miocene of Virginia and the Miocene and Pliocene of North Carolina was prepared by Dr. W. C. Mansfield before his death in July 1939. His purpose was "to provide a background of formational nomenclature" for the taxonomic treatment of the molluscan faunas. The physical nature and distribution of the upper Tertiary formations within those States are discussed, characteristic sections given, and diagnostic molluscan species listed. Part 1 of the systematic report covers the Pelecypoda. A monographic treatment is not attempted, but 132 previously known species are considered, and 62 new species and subspecies are described and figured.

From introduction: This report is based on investigations carried on by the Geological Survey (U. S. Department of the Interior) under the auspices of the Interdepartmental Committee on Scientific and Cultural Cooperation (U. S. Department of State) and the Foreign Economic Administration. The function of the last two agencies is presently carried on by the International Cooperation Administration. Roberts is responsible for the text of this report and for the compilation of the geologic map. He was in Central America from January to April 1942 under a program of scientific and technical cooperation with the American Republics sponsored by the Department of State, and mapped manganese deposits in Costa Rica and manganese and antimony deposits in Honduras.

From abstract: The Piedmont Upland in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Delaware is about 160 miles long and at the most 50 miles wide. Rocks that underlie the province are the Baltimore gneiss of Precambrian age and quartzite, gneiss, schist, marble, phyllite, and greenstone, which make up the Glenarm series of early Paleozoic(?) age. These are intruded by granitic, gabbroic, and ultramafic igneous rocks. Most of the ultramafic rocks, originally peridotite, pyroxenite, and dunite, have been partly or completely altered to serpentine and talc; they are all designated by the general term serpentine. The bodies of serpentine are commonly elongate and conformable with the enclosing rocks.

Abstract: Laguna La Torrecilla, Laguna de Pinones, Laguna San Jose, and Laguna del Condado, in the San Juan, Puerto Rico area, are located within a metropolitan area of more than 1 million people. Bathymetric maps made during the study, in 1973, showed that Lagunas La Torrecilla, San Jose, and del Condado have been modified by dredging and filling; whereas, Laguna de Pinones has remained in a near natural state. Laguna La Torrecilla has been dredged to a depth, in places, of about 18 metres, and Lagunas San Jose and del Condado, in places to about 11 meters. Dredging in the San Juan lagoons has been harmful, beneficial, and in a few instances has had little or no noticeable effect on the water quality. Usually, dredging in the connecting canals has been beneficial if the water entering the lagoons through the canals was of better quality than the water in the lagoon. Dredging in the mouths of lagoons has been beneficial; whereas, filling or blocking the mouths has been harmful.

Abstract: Quantitative statistical sampling of plant debris entombed within deltaic sediments of a Holocene fluviolacustrine environment at Silwood Lake, Berkshire, demonstrates that patterns of deposition exist that can be used to reconstruct the relative spatial distributions of species within the source vegetation.
