Article for a study aimed to develop understanding of the current state of metadata practices in digital collections of archival institutions in the Arabian Gulf region. It also explored perspectives (including attitudes and possible barriers) for development of large-scale regional portals that would facilitate discovery of Arab digital archives (including language collections) by aggregating metadata. It was presented at the 2nd International Workshop on Digital Language Archives held on June 30, 2023 as part of the ACM/IEEE Joint Conference on Digital Libraries 2023.

Article presenting two methods for connecting aggregated records to their source institutional metadata profiles. The use case of the Open Language Archives Community (OLAC) application profile is considered and evaluated. This article reports the first empirical investigation of various dimensions of organization and representation of recorded knowledge and information in language archives. The study used a combination of semi-structured interviews and content analysis. Results demonstrate that, while some of the phenomena related to organization of information in language archives are specific to these types of archives, others are more typical and have been addressed by libraries in past research and practice.

This paper explores the role of Historically Black College and University (HBCU) archives in preserving the history and cultural heritage of these institutions and investigates the factors that contribute to the disparities observed in the availability of digital collections and the staffing of archivists across HBCUs in the United States. Data was collected from 102 HBCU websites and the National Center for Education Statistics, and analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and ordinary linear regression. The findings revealed notable disparities in the staffing of archivists and the presence of digital archive collections, with geography, enrollment, and endowment emerging as potentially significant factors. The study highlights the importance of understanding key factors in the availability of digital archive collections and the staffing of archivists at HBCUs.

Data management plan for the grant, "Connecting Communities with Libraries, Archives, and Historians Through Oral Histories." The University of North Texas (UNT) Department of Information Science, partnering with the UNT Oral History Program, will host a series of forums to identify best practices and strategies to respond to challenges around building, implementing, preserving, and accessing community oral history projects. The project team will convene librarians, archivists, oral history practitioners, public historians, community-based memory workers, and others working in oral history to identify good practices, share challenges and lessons learned, and prepare an actionable roadmap for building, implementing, preserving, and sustaining community oral history projects.

Conference paper elucidates the issues facing language archive managers and users through two steps: content analysis of information organization in language archives, and semi-structured interviews with language archive managers and users. Primary challenges identified include lacking institutional support and a range of factors which impact authority control in language archives. This version is the author's accepted manuscript.

Presentation from a panel, "Considering Individual and Community Contexts Within Information Pedagogy, Scholarship, and Practice," that was held virtually for the 83rd Annual Meeting of the Association for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T). This portion of the panel focuses on the author's research into community-based language research (CBLR) and the Lamkang language.

Article describes how, since 2008, the End of Term Web Archive has been gathering snapshots of the federal web, consisting of the publicly accessible .gov and .mil websites. This paper describes the decisions made in the creation of these derivatives, the technologies used, and introduces the WARC Metadata Sidecar, which presents a useful approach for creating and storing auxiliary metadata for web archives.

Poster discussing practical methods for ensuring the quality of descriptive metadata associated with linguistic datasets in language archive deposits. Digital language archives are valuable tools for facilitating language revitalization, providing data on lesser-known languages, and supporting reproducibility of research and development of linguistic theory, though their potential remains unrealized as the data available in language archives are rarely accessed by linguists or language communities. Reasons for this under-utilization are the issues with data standardization and metadata quality. Including basic grammatical and typological information would allow wider audiences to reach the material.

This is an appendix to “What We Can Learn From Each Other: International Archival Pedagogy Conversations and Collaborations,” a manuscript that was inspired by a collaborative workshop at the 2023 institute of the Archival Education and Research Initiative (AERI). The lively workshop discussion revealed both how much the participants all had in common, and how much they had to learn from each other. Their discussion highlighted how disconnected and geographically siloed archival education programs still continue to be, despite opportunities for international collaboration between archival educators. With this issue in mind, workshop participants decided to continue their conversations past the AERI 2023 meeting as part of an investigation of current pedagogical practices, teaching needs, and future goals of archival educators in a variety of settings. They met on Zoom and then corresponded asynchronously for a discussion of the structures of their archival education programs, their students’ needs, their teaching goals, how they respond to challenges in their virtual and physical classrooms, and how they can leverage this and future collaborations to benefit both their students and the archival education field as a whole. Article explores the training gap between the way these materials are organized and represented and the understanding of that data – and expectations towards the more functional ways of its organization and representation – by language preservation and revitalization researchers, and by members of language communities. Information resources collected by language archives have unique attributes of importance to their target user groups, and these attributes and their representation are not currently widely addressed by the formal training provided to information professionals. Article describes how the End of Term (EOT) Web Archive Dataset presents a longitudinal dataset of the US federal web which includes publicly available .gov and .mil domains, created during the 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020 presidential elections in the United States. The authors describe how based on the End of Term Web Archive, this dataset presents 461TB of WARC data and accompanying derivative files in WAT, WET, and CDX format.
