Presentation based on the preliminary results of research into information organization in language archives. This looks at the background of language data and archives, their research questions, archives that were analyzed, their findings, and next steps.

This article reports preliminary results of the first stage of a research project that seeks to identify the information organization methods and techniques currently offered in the language data archives and the gaps between the tools and techniques available and the needs of actual and potential users of language data archives.

Article for a study aimed to develop understanding of the current state of metadata practices in digital collections of archival institutions in the Arabian Gulf region. It also explored perspectives (including attitudes and possible barriers) for development of large-scale regional portals that would facilitate discovery of Arab digital archives (including language collections) by aggregating metadata. It was presented at the 2nd International Workshop on Digital Language Archives held on June 30, 2023 as part of the ACM/IEEE Joint Conference on Digital Libraries 2023.

This article reports the first empirical investigation of various dimensions of organization and representation of recorded knowledge and information in language archives. The study used a combination of semi-structured interviews and content analysis. Results demonstrate that, while some of the phenomena related to organization of information in language archives are specific to these types of archives, others are more typical and have been addressed by libraries in past research and practice.

This paper explores the role of Historically Black College and University (HBCU) archives in preserving the history and cultural heritage of these institutions and investigates the factors that contribute to the disparities observed in the availability of digital collections and the staffing of archivists across HBCUs in the United States. Data was collected from 102 HBCU websites and the National Center for Education Statistics, and analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and ordinary linear regression. The findings revealed notable disparities in the staffing of archivists and the presence of digital archive collections, with geography, enrollment, and endowment emerging as potentially significant factors. The study highlights the importance of understanding key factors in the availability of digital archive collections and the staffing of archivists at HBCUs.

It was presented at the 1st International Workshop on Digital Language Archives held on September 30-October 1, 2021 as part of the ACM/IEEE Joint Conference on Digital Libraries 2021.

Conference paper elucidates the issues facing language archive managers and users through two steps: content analysis of information organization in language archives, and semi-structured interviews with language archive managers and users. Primary challenges identified include lacking institutional support and a range of factors which impact authority control in language archives. This version is the author's accepted manuscript.

This paper describes the decisions made in the creation of these derivatives, the technologies used, and introduces the WARC Metadata Sidecar, which presents a useful approach for creating and storing auxiliary metadata for web archives.

Poster discussing practical methods for ensuring the quality of descriptive metadata associated with linguistic datasets in language archive deposits. Digital language archives are valuable tools for facilitating language revitalization, providing data on lesser-known languages, and supporting reproducibility of research and development of linguistic theory, though their potential remains unrealized as the data available in language archives are rarely accessed by linguists or language communities. Reasons for this under-utilization are the issues with data standardization and metadata quality. Including basic grammatical and typological information would allow wider audiences to reach the material.

Article explores the training gap between the way these materials are organized and represented and the understanding of that data – and expectations towards the more functional ways of its organization and representation – by language preservation and revitalization researchers, and by members of language communities. Information resources collected by language archives have unique attributes of importance to their target user groups, and these attributes and their representation are not currently widely addressed by the formal training provided to information professionals. Article discusses how building a digital language archive requires a number of steps to ensure collecting, describing, preserving and providing access to language data in effective and efficient ways. This paper introduces the reader to the background of this project and discusses some of the areas important for representing language materials where both University of North Texas Libraries (UNTL) metadata and CoRSAL metadata practices were adapted to better fit the needs of intended audiences.

The goal of this study is to explore how information is currently organized in digital cultural heritage collections in Arabian Gulf countries. it focused on Alqabas – a Kuwaiti institution with a strong reputation of early adopter of digital archiving and developer of major digital collections in Arab Gulf counties, accumulated experience in knowledge management. The mixed-methods study combined semi-structured interview of the Alqabas archive manager and in-depth content analysis of a sample of metadata records that represent items in Alqabas digital collections for accuracy, completeness, consistency, use of knowledge organization systems. The study reveals high metadata quality overall but lack of consistency for many metadata fields, explained in part by the absence of metadata creation guidelines and professional training for metadata creators. This indicates potential barriers to metadata interoperability in an aggregated environment for future projects similar to DPLA or Europeana.
