CAREER: Shape Memory Polymers as Biomaterial

Data management plan for the grant, "CAREER: Shape Memory Polymers as Biomaterial." This CAREER projectaimsto elucidate the underlying mechanism of the plasticization-induced shape memory effect of thiol-enebased polymers. The model application for this material will be a heat shrink tubing that can shrink at bodily conditions (37° C and simulated body fluids) and can be used to seal colonic anastomosis. The specific three aims are to (1) Systematically investigate the effect of crosslink-density and chain extender length on theplasticization-induced shape memory effect of thiol-enebased polymers. Mechanical and thermomechanical measurements inside simulated body fluids will be used to assess shape memory properties and structure-property relationships. (2) Understand the relationship between material thickness, degree of shape-programming, and radial recovery forces of tube-shaped SMPs to determine optimal design parameters for sufficient shape recovery using the heat shrink tube model. (3) Demonstrate the functionality of a biomedical heat shrink tube that utilizes the plasticization-induced shape recovery through an ex vivo colon anastomosis model and quantify mechanical and sealing properties.

CAREER: Reinventing Network-on-Chips of GPU-Accelerated Systems

Data management plan for the grant, "CAREER: Reinventing Network-on-Chips of GPU-Accelerated Systems." Research seeking to reinvent on-chip networks for GPU-accelerated systems to remove a communication bottleneck. A major outcome of the project is a set of techniques that enable the development of effective and efficient network-on-chip architectures. Graphics processing units (GPUs) have rapidly evolved to become high-performance accelerators for data-parallel computing. To fully take advantage of the computing power of GPUs, on-chip networks need to provide timely data movement to satisfy the requests of data by the processing cores. Currently, there exists a big gap between the fast-growing processing power of the GPU processing cores and the slow-increasing on-chip network bandwidth. Because of this, GPU-accelerated systems are interconnect-dominated and the on-chip network becomes their performance bottleneck.

CPS: Medium: Integrating sensors, controls, and ecotoxicology with decoupled aquaponics using brackish groundwater and desalination concentrate for sustainable food production

Data management plan for the grant, "CPS: Medium: Integrating sensors, controls, and ecotoxicology with decoupled aquaponics using brackish groundwater and desalination concentrate for sustainable food production." This project aims to develop a cyber-physical system (CPS) testbed of integrated sensors, controls, machine learning, and ecotoxicology tools to engineer sustainable food production systems based on aquaculture using brackish water. The testbed includes an automated recirculating aquaculture system integrated with a real-time ecotoxicology system, implementing the system using desalination concentrate to demonstrate that brackish groundwater desalination costs can be offset by using its byproducts for profitable food production. This project will engage students of the local communities in three major ways: developing an exhibit and activity emphasizing interdisciplinary CPS research conducted during the academic year, offering summer research experiences to students from underrepresented groups, and participating in STEM outreach events targeting underrepresented groups.

This research will investigate a vital, but currently uncharacterized, macrosystem biogeochemical function within forest canopies at the very start of the terrestrial hydrologic cycle: particulate concentration, flux, and composition in rainwaters draining from forest canopies. We will address three major objectives: (1) Estimate the net rainfall (TF+ SF) water and particulate mass flux across forest types; (2) Characterize the particulate composition (C:N:P, including C components, like total C, organic C, black C, and microplastic C) of TF and SF; and (3) Identify major drivers of macrosystem variability in net rainfall particulate flux and composition.

The University of North Texas and the University of Alabama, in partnership with the Pottsboro Area Library and the Tuscaloosa Public Library, will develop a program called "Raise Up Radio: Family and Youth Engagement in Library Supported Learning Via Radio" to address educational inequities that became even more pronounced during the COVID-19 pandemic and create a professional network of librarians who use radio broadcasts. Over two years, six libraries serving high-need rural communities in Texas and Alabama will each implement a total of four, five-week educational programs delivered over local radio stations. The program will leverage existing community resources to create accessible educational content through collaborative partnerships. It will connect libraries, museums, and educational institutions with students in rural communities through science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) content. Local youth and families will develop these new radio programs using best practices for equitable youth and family engagement in learning.
