"So far, very careful investigations have been made regarding the flight properties, in particular the static and dynamic stability, of engine-propelled aircraft and of untowed gliders. In contrast, almost no investigations exist regarding the stability of airplanes towed by a towline. Thus, the following report will aim at investigating the directional stability of the towed airplane and, particularly, at determining what parameters of the flight attitude and what configuration properties affect the stability" (p. 1).

In an attempt to follow the time rate of change of the processes in turbulent flows by quantitative measurements the measurement of the pressure is often beset with insuperable difficulties for the reason that the speeds and hence the pressures to be measured are often very small. On the other hand, the measurement of very small pressures requires, at least, considerable time, so that the follow-up of periodically varying processes is as goad as impossible. In order to obviate these difficulties a method, suggested by Prof. Prandtl, has been developed by which the pressure distribution is simply determined from the photographic flow picture.

Applications of radioisotopes in the preparation of labeled drugs are reviewed. Among the applications described are the preparation of carbon-14- labeled cardiac glycosides, and the biosyinthesis of carbon-14-labeled digitoxin, morphine, colchicine, atropine, podophyllotoxin, and nicotine. The fate and metabolism of many of these drugs were traced. Radiochemical procedures were developed for the synthesis of pure compounds of pharmacological interest labeled with carbon-14, sulfur-35, and tritium. Investigations were made on the phenomena of drug penetration into the central nervous system. Publications during the period are listed. (C.H.)

A report about investigations of several binary alloy systems of thorium. Some of these alloys containing lead, molybdenum and tin have been prepared in the tungsten arc furnace.

Boron-10 has a high thermal neutron capture cross section (3880 barns). Following neutron capture, the subsequent nuclear disintegration produces an alpha particle and a lithium-7 nucleus with the release of an average of 2.34 MeV for the particle irradiation, and in 93% of the reactions there is also the emission of an 0.48 MeV gamma ray: [equation not transcribed]. The kinetic energy is divided between the lithium-7 nucleus and the alpha particle giving the equal and opposite momentums with a range in tissue of about 8-14μ or approximately 1 cell diameter (1). This fact and the reported favorable partition of boron between tumor and the normal brain suggested a possible therapeutic usefulness which has been investigated clinically. The object of our study is to document the biological effects of the B10 (n,α) Li7 reaction on the brain of dogs injected with boron-10 30 minutes prior to irradiation with thermal neutrons. For this, we felt it desirable to estimate a dose for the boron-10 reaction which if exceeded, produces destruction of normal tissue. Report presenting testing of a semispan model of a wing of triangular plan form and aspect ratio 2 in the 12-foot pressure tunnel to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of the wing as influenced by the independent effects of Reynolds number and Mach number up to Mach numbers approaching unity. Results regarding the effect of body and effect of wing-profile modification are also provided.

An investigation was conducted on an axial-flow-compressor type turbojet engine in the NACA Lewis altitude wind tunnel to determine the operational characteristics of several ignition systems, cross-fire tube configurations and fuel systems over a range of simulated flight conditions. The opposite-polarity-type spark plug provided the most satisfactory ignition. Increasing the cross-fire-tube diameter improved intercombustor flame propagation. At high windmilling speeds, accelerations to approximately 6200 rpm could be made at a preset constant throttle position. The use of a variable-area nozzle reduced acceleration time.

Memorandum presenting wind-tunnel tests that have been made to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of a model tail plane with modified NACA 65-010 sections and a tapered plan form. Results were obtained with the model tail plane unswept and swept back. The data show the lift, drag, pitching-moment, and hinge-moment coefficient variation with angle of attack and flap deflection at various Mach numbers.

This report presents an initial evaluation of the major health and environmental issues associated with increased coal use in the six midwestern states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin is presented. Using an integrated assessment approach, the evaluation proceeds from a base-line scenario of energy demand and facility siting for the period 1975 to 2020. Emphasis is placed on impacts from coal extraction, land reclamation, coal combustion for electrical generation, and coal gasification. The range of potential impacts and constraints is illustrated by a second scenario that represents an expected upper limit for coal utilization in Illinois. Included are: (1) a characterization of the energy demand and siting scenarios, coal related technologies, and coal resources, and (2) the related impacts on air quality, water availability, water quality, and human health.
