Development of novel copper-based sorbents for hot-gas cleanup (open access)

Development of novel copper-based sorbents for hot-gas cleanup

The objective of this investigation is to evaluate several novel copper-based binary oxides for their suitability as regenerable sorbents for hot gas cleanup application in the temperature range of 650{degree} to 850{degree}C (1200{degree}--1550{degree}F). To achieve this objective, several novel copper-based binary oxide sorbents will be prepared. Experimental tests will be conducted at ambient pressure to determine the stability, sulfidation capacity, regenerability, and sulfidation kinetics of the novel sorbents. Tests will also be conducted at high pressure for the determination of the sulfidation reactivity, regenerability, and durability of the sorbents. The attrition characteristics of the sorbents will also be determined.

Design-for-analysis or the unintended role of analysis in the design of piping systems (open access)

Design-for-analysis or the unintended role of analysis in the design of piping systems

The paper discusses the evolution of piping design in the nuclear industry with its increasing reliance on dynamic analysis. While it is well recognized that the practice has evolved from design-by- rule '' to design-by-analysis,'' examples are provided of cases where the choice of analysis technique has determined the hardware configuration, which could be called design-for-analysis.'' The paper presents practical solutions to some of these cases and summarizes the important recent industry and regulatory developments which, if successful, will reverse the trend towards design-for-analysis.'' 14 refs.

Partial-wave analyses of hadron scattering below 2 GeV (open access)

Partial-wave analyses of hadron scattering below 2 GeV

The Center for Analysis of Particle Scattering (CAPS) in the Department of Physics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University has analyzed basic two-body hadron reactions below 2 GeV for the last two decades. Reactions studied were nucleon-nucleon, pion-nucleon, K{sup +}-nucleon and pion photoproduction systems. In addition to analyses of these systems, a computer graphics system (SAID) has been developed and disseminated to over 250 research institutions using VAX computers. The computer-interactive system for disseminating information on basic scattering reactions is also accessible to the physics community through TELNET on the VPI SU physics department VAX. 6 refs.

Medical screening reference manual for security force personnel at fuel cycle facilities possessing formula quantities of special nuclear materials (open access)

Medical screening reference manual for security force personnel at fuel cycle facilities possessing formula quantities of special nuclear materials

The recommendations contained throughout this NUREG were provided to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) as medical screening information that could be used by physicians who are evaluating the parameters of the safe participation of guards, Tactical Response Team members (TRTs), and all other armed response personnel in physical fitness training and in physical performance standards testing. The information provided in this NUREG will help licensees to determine if guards, TRTs, and other armed response personnel can effectively perform their normal and emergency duties without undue hazard to themselves, to fellow employees, to the plant site, and to the general public. The medical recommendations in this NUREG are similar in content to the medical standards contained in 10 CFR Part 1046 which, in part, specifies medical standards for the protective force personnel regulated by the Department of Energy. The guidelines contained in this NUREG are not requirements, and compliance is not required. 3 refs.

The principle of "sankofa" in elementary music instruction in southern Ghana: selected school personnel's views of and their role in its implementation (open access)

The principle of "sankofa" in elementary music instruction in southern Ghana: selected school personnel's views of and their role in its implementation

The study ascertained elementary school teachers' and supervisors' views about their role in the implementation of Sankofa (Go back and retrieve) in school music. Sankofa mandates the integration of distinctive Ghanian traditional values and practices with Western educational concepts in the school curriculum. In music, it calls for the fusion of multi-ethnic musics of Ghana with Western musical concepts in public school music instruction. Some concerns expressed by Ghanian music educators regarding teachers' negative attitudes toward Sankofa in public school music had prompted the study.
