Factors Involved in Passive Transfer of Contact Hypersensitivity (open access)

Factors Involved in Passive Transfer of Contact Hypersensitivity

Delayed hypersensitivity can be conferred passively to normal animals. There exists a period when whole peritoneal exudate cells will passively confer delayed sensitivity, but a sonic extract from them will not; however, after a few more days, both whole cells and sonic extracts could transfer sensitivity. This investigation was undertaken to study the differences in cells collected at two different time intervals after initial sensitization of guinea pigs with 1-fluoro-2,4-dinitrobenzene.

John Morgan: Pioneer in American Medical Education

This study is an attempt to evaluate Morgan's contributions to American medicine in his time and place. An assessment of his role as a liberally educated, eighteenth-century philosopher will be ventured. Further, his appointment and subsequent dismissal as director-general of the Continental Army's medical department will be examined. The study will attempt to show Morgan as a product of the Enlightenment, as demonstrated by his desire to be physician, natural philosopher, and patriotic citizen.

The Effect of Carbon Monoxide on the Growth of an Aquatic Streptomycete (open access)

The Effect of Carbon Monoxide on the Growth of an Aquatic Streptomycete

The major purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of carbon monoxide on the development of various morphological phases of a single isolate of the aquatic streptomycetes and to elucidate the physiological differences between terminal respiration in the primary and secondary stages. A secondary purpose was to repeat the work of Michael Lee Higgins involving the effect of anaerobiosis on the growth of the organism.

Effect of Emotional Stimulation on Recognition and Inference

The purpose of this study was to make an assessment of the probable effects of extraneous stimulation on both cognitive achievement or learning, and emotional reactions and autonomic arousals of students. While the focus of interest was upon possible disruptive effects, the kinds of measurements projected would make it possible to observe some effects of either kind, disruptive or facilitative.

Studies of Mouse Hypersensitivities (open access)

Studies of Mouse Hypersensitivities

Having considered the data collected thus far concerning immediate and delayed hypersensitivity reactions in the mouse, the experimentation following is devised essentially to follow the pattern of Crowle in the production and testing for immunoresponse. Instead of using the normal solvent, that is, acetone, this work is also intended to partially evaluated the use of dimethyl sulfoxide as a solvent for the contact allergin, dinitroflurobenzene.

Responses to Diets High in Phenylalanine Compounds as Genetic Parameters in Mice

The induction of phenylketonuria in mice through the use of excess dietary phenylalanine is an area in which limited research has been done. This study intends to pursue further work in this area, more specifically, to study the effects of excess dietary phenylalanine and the phenylalanine analogue A.P.B.A. (2-amino-3-phenyl butanoic acid) (7) on brain serotonin and brain norepinephrine. In addition, the effects of these two compounds on the incidence of audiogenic seizures will be explored.

The Goals of the Peace Corps (open access)

The Goals of the Peace Corps

Agencies such as the Peace Corps are by nature benevolent, which means they are devised for the expressed purpose of granting aid to other persons. In this case, the avowed purpose is aid for the underdeveloped nations of the world. However, politicians lodged in governmental authority are not humanistic solely for the sake of helping others; there are political aims to be gained. What these aims are and how they affect the operation of a youth corps for peace is a major concern of this thesis.

Mexican Military Movements in the Texas Revolution (open access)

Mexican Military Movements in the Texas Revolution

"This thesis describes the art of logistics practiced by Santa-Anna and his staff in the marches from Northern Mexico to San Jacinto and Goliad, and the subsequent withdrawal. The method, or methods, employed to keep such an army in fighting condition are analyzed as it moved slowly and uncertainly across the desert and semi-desert areas, over burnt-out prairies and flooding rivers. To obtain the most complete picture of the Mexican army's movements and needs, the letters and diaries of the outstanding Mexican participants were used. Whenever possible American sources were studied to substantiate any seemingly questionable information in the Mexican accounts...As this thesis is primarily concerned with logistics, battles are not covered in detail. In cases where a conflict between American and Mexican sources exists concerning any phase of the Mexican military movements during the Texan revolution, both sides are presented, and an attempt made to evaluate them objectively." -- leaf x.
