Overheating in Hot Water- and Steam-Heated Multifamily Buildings (open access)

Overheating in Hot Water- and Steam-Heated Multifamily Buildings

Apartment temperature data have been collected from the archives of companies that provide energy management systems (EMS) to multifamily buildings in the Northeast U.S. The data have been analyzed from more than 100 apartments in eighteen buildings where EMS systems were already installed to quantify the degree of overheating. This research attempts to answer the question, 'What is the magnitude of apartment overheating in multifamily buildings with central hot water or steam heat?' This report provides valuable information to researchers, utility program managers and building owners interested in controlling heating energy waste and improving resident comfort. Apartment temperature data were analyzed for deviation from a 70 degrees F desired setpoint and for variation by heating system type, apartment floor level and ambient conditions. The data shows that overheating is significant in these multifamily buildings with both hot water and steam heating systems.

Born Digital: Guidance for Donors, Dealers, and Archival Repositories

The report provides recommendations to help ensure the physical and intellectual well-being of materials created and managed in digital form ("born digital") that are transferred from donors to archival repositories. The report is presented in four sections, each of which provides an overview of a key area of concern: initial collection review, privacy and intellectual property, key stages in acquiring digital materials, and post-acquisition review by the repository. Each section concludes with two lists of recommendations: one for donors and dealers, and a second for repository staff. Appendixes provide more specific information about possible staffing activities, as well as a list of resources and ready-to-use checklists that incorporate recommendations from throughout the report. Ten archivists and curators from institutions in the United States and United Kingdom collaborated on the report.

Pacific Blitzkrieg: World War II in the Central Pacific

Access: Use of this item is restricted to the UNT Community
Pacific Blitzkrieg closely examines the planning, preparation, and execution of ground operations for five major invasions in the Central Pacific (Guadalcanal, Tarawa, the Marshalls, Saipan, and Okinawa). The commanders on the ground had to integrate the U.S. Army and Marine Corps into a single striking force, something that would have been difficult in peacetime, but in the midst of a great global war, it was a monumental task. Yet, ultimate success in the Pacific rested on this crucial, if somewhat strained, partnership and its accomplishments. Despite the thousands of works covering almost every aspect of World War II in the Pacific, until now no one has examined the detailed mechanics behind this transformation at the corps and division level. Sharon Tosi Lacey makes extensive use of previously untapped primary research material to re-examine the development of joint ground operations, the rapid transformation of tactics and equipment, and the evolution of command relationships between army and marine leadership. This joint venture was the result of difficult and patient work by commanders and evolving staffs who acted upon the lessons of each engagement with remarkable speed. For every brilliant strategic and operational decision of the war, there were thousands of minute actions …

Oral History Interview with Don Engleking, October 17, 2013

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Don Engleking. Engleking was born in San Antonio in 1923. Upon graduation from high school, he entered the Reserve Officers Training Corps at Texas A&M University in 1941. He was withdrawn from college and placed into Officers Candidate School, receiving his commission in 1942. After graduation he was sent to the Philippines. Upon his arrival on Luzon, he was assigned as company commander of a prisoner of war unit and named the camp commandant without receiving formal instructions regarding the supervision of such facilities. He remembers being surprised that so many of his Japanese inmates could speak English and comments on the intelligence and self-discipline of his charges and notes that all of them were enlisted men. After the camp was disbanded and the Japanese inmates sent to Japan, he returned to the United States and reentered Texas A&M.
