Use of short-term test systems for the prediction of the hazard represented by potential chemical carcinogens (open access)

Use of short-term test systems for the prediction of the hazard represented by potential chemical carcinogens

It has been hypothesized that results from short-term bioassays will ultimately provide information that will be useful for human health hazard assessment. Historically, the validity of the short-term tests has been assessed using the framework of the epidemiologic/medical screens. In this context, the results of the carcinogen (long-term) bioassay is generally used as the standard. However, this approach is widely recognized as being biased and, because it employs qualitative data, cannot be used to assist in isolating those compounds which may represent a more significant toxicologic hazard than others. In contrast, the goal of this research is to address the problem of evaluating the utility of the short-term tests for hazard assessment using an alternative method of investigation. Chemicals were selected mostly from the list of carcinogens published by the International Agency for Research on Carcinogens (IARC); a few other chemicals commonly recognized as hazardous were included. Tumorigenicity and mutagenicity data on 52 chemicals were obtained from the Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances (RTECS) and were analyzed using a relative potency approach. The data were evaluated in a format which allowed for a comparison of the ranking of the mutagenic relative potencies of the compounds (as estimated using …

A survey of tracer gas techniques for estimation airflow and effective volumes in single and multizone buildings (open access)

A survey of tracer gas techniques for estimation airflow and effective volumes in single and multizone buildings

This paper briefly describes the development of tracer gas techniques. These techniques were introduced over 50 years ago and have evolved into a number of distinct methods. These methods are often tailored to a specific application or to obtain particular information about the flow and volume system. Single-zone techniques are utilized when the structure or zone is relatively well-mixed and can be characterized by a single concentration measurement. Areas or rooms within a single-family residence can sometimes be closely approximated as one well-mixed zone. Multizone techniques are required when the building is composed of two or more zones which communicate with one another through interzonal airflows. Commercial office buildings are usually multizone systems. This paper focuses on single and multiple gas tracer techniques. Traditionally, multizone systems have been analyzed by using a different tracer for each zone. These techniques require equipment capable of accurately injecting and detecting each of the tracers which can be cumbersome in large order systems. Recently, a number of methods have been proposed which use a single tracer gas to estimate flow and effective volumes in multizone systems. 24 refs., 2 figs., 1 tab.

An aerial radiological survey of the Hanford Site and surrounding area, Richland, Washington (open access)

An aerial radiological survey of the Hanford Site and surrounding area, Richland, Washington

An aerial radiological survey was conducted over the Department of Energy's Hanford Site near Richland, Washington, during the period 5 July through 26 August 1988. The survey was expanded, and additional flights were conducted to the east of the site and along the banks of the Columbia River down to McNary Dam near Umatilla. The survey was flown at altitude of 61 meters (200 feet) by a helicopter containing 17 liters (eight 2 in. {times} 4 in. {times} 16 in.) of sodium iodide detectors. Gamma ray data were collected over the survey area by flying north-south lines spaced 122 meters (400 feet) apart. The processed data indicated that detected radioisotopes and their associated gamma ray exposure rates were generally consistent with those expected from normal background emitters and man-made fission/activation products resulting from activities at the site. External exposure rates were generally 10 microroentgens per hour ({mu}R/h) with some operating areas over 1000 {mu}R/h. The radiation levels over more than 95% of the site are due to normal background exposure rates. 3 refs., 25 figs.

BEATRIX-II Program, January 1989--December 1989: ANNEX-III to IEA implementing agreement for a programme of research and development on radiation damage in fusion materials

BEATRIX-II is an International Energy Agency (IEA) sponsored collaborative experiment among Japan, Canada, and the United States. The purpose of the experiment is to evaluate the performance of ceramic solid breeder materials in a fast neutron environment. To do this, an in-situ tritium recovery experiment is being conducted in the Fast Flux Test Facility (FFTF), located on the Hanford site near Richland, Washington, and operated by Westinghouse Hanford Company (WHC). The Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL), Richland, Washington, together with the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) and Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) are responsible for conducting the experiment.
