An Agonizing Evolution: a History of the Texas National Guard, 1900-1945

The National Guard in America began in the Revolutionary War. The Texas units resulted from the earlier concept and emerged in 1835 to resist Mexican oppression. Following achievement of statehood, Texas militiamen served in the Mexican War, the Civil War, and the Spanish-American War. As the twentieth century began, Texans had a long history of service in reserve military organizations in spite of a prevailing attitude of contempt for citizen soldiers held by influential regular army officials.

Analysis of activities in production typewriting and development of a teaching model and standards

The problem of this study is an analysis of activities in production typewriting, development of a teaching model, and establishment of production standards. The study has four main purposes which are: (1) to identify the time spent in keystroking, decision making, typing from longhand copy, erasing an original, typing and correcting one carbon copy, and proofreading; (2) to test the correlation between anxiety level and decision-making time, and IQ and decision-making time; (3) to analyze the differences in difficulty level of six production tasks and develop a teaching model; and (4) to discover the mean gross words per minute rate and total number of errors on six production tasks and develop production standards.

Arthur Garfield Dove's landscape assemblages: a unique intersection of European modernism, American ideas, and nature-based abstraction (open access)

Arthur Garfield Dove's landscape assemblages: a unique intersection of European modernism, American ideas, and nature-based abstraction

In the middle of his career, Arthur Garfield Dove created a smell yet novel body of landscape assemblages. They illustrate Dove's central interest in evoking nature--its motifs and rhythms--through imaginative associations of organic and man-made materials. These works represent Dove's synthesis of contemporary European stylistic and intellectual ideas as well as American philosophies and concerns. They also reflect the influence of Alfred Stieglitz and his circle and the artist Helen Torr, Dove's second wife. This study examines how Dove used a complex interplay of European theory and technique, American ideas and his own nature-based abstract style to create the landscape assemblages, works that are uniquely independent in the history of American art.

Celestial concomitants of human behavior

The objective of this dissertation is to provide a sensitive and replicable test of selected astrological hypotheses. One such testable astrological notion is the idea that the angular relationships between the heavenly bodies at a person's birth time are predictive of his or her personality traits. In this study a sample of 155 volunteers was administered the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16 PF) and a correlation between the frequencies for the subjects' four astrological aspects (sextiles, trines, squares, and opporitions) and the Q4 scale (Tension/Relaxation) of the 16PF was determined.

Creation and Characterization of an Escherichia Coli and Pseudomonas Putida Hybrid Aspartate Transcarbamoylase

Aspartate transcarbamoylase (ATCase) is encoded by the pyrBI genes in E. coli. Expression of these genes is reduced four-fold by attenuation when grown on uracil. Using plasmid, pRO1727. the pyrB and the pyrBI genes from E. coli were cloned into a P. putida pyrB auxotroph. A recombinant pyrB gene was recovered that encoded a functional hybrid ATCase with a molecular weight of 470 kDa.

The Cycle of Life Symphony (open access)

The Cycle of Life Symphony

This symphony is a representation of the composer's philosophy of life, which includes a belief in a pre-existent life (Beginnings), a mortal life (Searchings and Wanderings), and a life after death (Return Home). Three out of four of the cyclic elements in the Symphony are symbolic. Theme one represents the influence for good which emanates from a living God; motive one represents the influence for evil, or the Devil; motive two represents the influence of Christ. All three of these influences were present in the pre-existence, they are present in earth life and in the life after death, where good will ultimately triumph over evil. Motive three is found in both first and third movements, but has no symbolic meaning.
