3rd Quarterly Technical Progress Report for Geothermal System Temperature-Depth Database (open access)

3rd Quarterly Technical Progress Report for Geothermal System Temperature-Depth Database

At the Southern Methodist University Geothermal Laboratory in Dallas, Texas, the Earth`s surface and internal temperature are studied. With financial support from the U.S. Department of Energy, a data base containing geothermal temperature well information for the United States is being developed. During this calendar quarter, activity with this project has continued involving several different tasks: planning and development of the geothermal system thermal-well data base and temperature-depth data, and development of a World Wide Web home page.

An On-Line Integrated Control System for Reducing Coal Costs and Coal-Related Emissions: Coal Blend Automation System (CBAS)

In 1995, TransAlta Utilities and Dairyland Power agreed to participate in a project funded by the U.S. Department of Energy to demonstrate a power plant optimization software product developed by Praxis Engineers, Inc. The product, the Plant Environmental and Cost Optimization System (PECOS{trademark}), considers the power plant in its entirety from coal receipts and yard management to solid by-products and emissions. Its basic goal is to minimize the controllable costs of power generation. PECOS does so by performing an on-line analysis of all operations and their co-optimization to achieve a minimum generation cost. The software acts as an advisor to the plant operators and computes settings that achieve this goal. A general schematic of PECOS is given.

A hydrogeologic map of the Death Valley region, Nevada, and California, developed using GIS techniques (open access)

A hydrogeologic map of the Death Valley region, Nevada, and California, developed using GIS techniques

In support of Yucca Mountain site characterization studies, a hydrogeologic framework was developed, and a hydrogeologic map was constructed for the Death Valley region. The region, covering approximately 100,000 km{sup 2} along the Nevada-California border near Las Vegas, is characterized by isolated mountain ranges juxtaposed against broad, alluvium-filled valleys. Geologic conditions are typical of the Basin and Range Province; a variety of sedimentary and igneous intrusive and extrusive rocks have been subjected to both compressional and extensional deformation. The regional ground-water flow system can best be described as a series of connected intermontane basins in which ground-water flow occurs in basin-fill deposits, carbonate rocks, clastic rocks, and volcanic rocks. Previous investigations have developed more site-specific hydrogeologic relationships; however, few have described all the lithologies within the Death Valley regional ground-water flow system. Information required to characterize the hydrogeologic units in the region was obtained from regional geologic maps and reports. Map data were digitized from regional geologic maps and combined into a composite map using a geographic information system. This map was simplified to show 10 laterally extensive hydrogeologic units with distinct hydrologic properties. The hydraulic conductivity values for the hydrogeologic units range over 15 orders of magnitude due to …

WESF hot cells waste minimization criteria hot cells window seals evaluation (open access)

WESF hot cells waste minimization criteria hot cells window seals evaluation

WESF will decouple from B Plant in the near future. WESF is attempting to minimize the contaminated solid waste in their hot cells and utilize B Plant to receive the waste before decoupling. WESF wishes to determine the minimum amount of contaminated waste that must be removed in order to allow minimum maintenance of the hot cells when they are placed in ''laid-up'' configuration. The remaining waste should not cause unacceptable window seal deterioration for the remaining life of the hot cells. This report investigates and analyzes the seal conditions and hot cell history and concludes that WESF should remove existing point sources, replace cerium window seals in F-Cell and refurbish all leaded windows (except for A-Cell). Work should be accomplished as soon as possible and at least within the next three years.

Hydrogeologic evaluation and numerical simulation of the Death Valley regional ground-water flow system, Nevada and California (open access)

Hydrogeologic evaluation and numerical simulation of the Death Valley regional ground-water flow system, Nevada and California

Yucca Mountain is being studied as a potential site for a high-level radioactive waste repository. In cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Geological Survey is evaluating the geologic and hydrologic characteristics of the ground-water system. The study area covers approximately 100,000 square kilometers between lat 35{degrees}N., long 115{degrees}W and lat 38{degrees}N., long 118{degrees}W and encompasses the Death Valley regional ground-water flow system. Hydrology in the region is a result of both the and climatic conditions and the complex described as dominated by interbasinal flow and may be conceptualized as having two main components: a series of relatively shallow and localized flow paths that are superimposed on deeper regional flow paths. A significant component of the regional ground-water flow is through a thick Paleozoic carbonate rock sequence. Throughout the regional flow system, ground-water flow is probably controlled by extensive and prevalent structural features that result from regional faulting and fracturing. Hydrogeologic investigations over a large and hydrogeologically complex area impose severe demands on data management. This study utilized geographic information systems and geoscientific information systems to develop, store, manipulate, and analyze regional hydrogeologic data sets describing various components of the ground-water flow system.
