The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the six special military units which were authorized and created by the War Department under the direction of Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton. In relating the military history of such special units the study determines what contributions and significance they made to the Union war effort.

The National Guard in America began in the Revolutionary War. The Texas units resulted from the earlier concept and emerged in 1835 to resist Mexican oppression. Following achievement of statehood, Texas militiamen served in the Mexican War, the Civil War, and the Spanish-American War. As the twentieth century began, Texans had a long history of service in reserve military organizations in spite of a prevailing attitude of contempt for citizen soldiers held by influential regular army officials.

This work is an attempt to examine the nature of psychohistorical writing after 1958 and to assess the impact of this new discipline in historiography. The year 1958 was chosen as the date of beginning of scholarly psychohistory for two reasons: in that year the highly respected historian, William Langer, in a presidential address to the American Historical Association, called upon his colleagues to use psychoanalysis in their research; and Erik Erikcon published Young Man Luther: A Study in Psychoanalysis and History, which has been accepted ever since as the finest example of psychohistorical writing.

The problem with which this study is concerned is that of analyzing the implementation of the stated purposes of analyzing the implementation of the stated purposes of Lon Morris College of Jacksonville, Texas from 1847 to 1973. Histories and Journals of the period, records and publications of the school and other institutions, and oral interviews of persons involved in its development provide data for the study. As a historical analysis, the study is divided according to successive periods in the school's development.

During the Baroque Era (1600-1750) many motets were written for one solo voice, representing a major departure from the polyphonic motet settings which had been produced since before 1250. The study traces the development of the solo motet from it s first appearance in the Centro concerti ecclesiastici of Lodovico Grossi do Viadana in 1602 up to 1750, when the style began to deteriorate along with the Neapolitan opera style.

This study examines how Morton Schamberg encapsulated a significant understanding or European Modernism and created its translation into a unique American style of art known as Precisionism. After his formal studies in architecture and painting and his trips to Europe, he did reworkings of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism before creating important modernist works.

This dissertation assesses Leonardo Bruni as an individual in Renaissance Italy, analyzes the general contours of his humanism, and demonstrates the central role played by history in his thought. The sources used include manuscripts and printed editions if Bruni's works, the letters and works of his contemporaries, certain ancient and medieval works, and subsequent scholarship on the subject.

The problem addressed in this paper was the appropriateness of fiber, especially in the form of fabric, as an art medium. Relevant statements by crafts makers, philosophers, art critics, and artists were investigated along with historical and contemporary art and craft works.

The problem of this study was to prepare a comprehensive family living textbook for use by high school students. The primary purposes of the study were the following: (1) to provide teenagers with factual information concerning sexuality which will better equip them to make responsible decisions; (2) to prepare young people to become better marriage partners, better parents and ultimately to produce stronger families for the future.
