The holiday started in the southern states as "Decoration Day" prior to the end of the war which seperated state from state and in some instances, brother from brother. Established originally as an observance to honor soldiers killed in the U.S. Civil War, it wasn't an official holiday for the nation until 1868. It was then Commander-in-chief John A. Dunn and was published weekly in the “interest of local affairs.” On May 11, 1895, B. A. Rudley purchased the newspaper factory from Dunn. A. R. Johnson continued on as the editor. In the last year of its existence the paper measured 18 by 24 inches and featured four pages of seven columns. The cost of a year’s subscription was one dollar. The Courier may have continued publication until 1898.
