Brief history of the fort used to protect the Chickasaw and Choctaw Indians from the raids of the Plains Indians, use as stopover point for travelers going west, and role played in the Civil War is included in the article. From a history compiled by Ralph Evans, Marietta. Account of the fire that destroyed the business district. The fire started in the Ab Burch livery stable, on Caddo, and burned stores up to the area of Main and Washington streets. Water from wells in the center of Main street was used. Names of the first organized fire department members, under Chief J. S. O'Mealy, are given. In 1902 Mayor Bob Dick and Lee Galt were instrumental in establishing a better water supply. Davis ( continued ) First wedding was between Mart Gibson and Lulu Ferguson. Bank was run by James Paulk, John A McIntosh, S. H. Davis and James Darby. Brochures from the fort, located 11 miles east of Madill, on State Highway 12199. History of the site, first chosen by Gen. Zachary Taylor in 1841, is given along with photographs of some of the areas.

Page from a Shrine Rodeo program with history of the fort. Construction was begun April 23, 1842, under the command of Capt. George A. H. Blake, with limestone from the surrounding area. Later commanders, the Butterfield Overland Mail, Gen. Douglas H. Coopers home, allotment to the Charles Colbert family, Prairie Grove school, and planned restoration work are included in the story.

"Fort Washita Is Fading Into History", Durant Daily Democrat, May 31, 1959. Article concerning the history of the fort and the present condition of the buildings. Photographs of the buildings, in unrestored state, are included. Mentioned in the article are: locations of the buildings on the post, size of the post (about five miles long and two miles wide), travelers on the Marcy Trail, the Overland Mail route, use as Confederate post under Gen. Albert Pike, and abandonment in 1863.
