Lessons Learned: Digitization of Cooke County Ledgers

This paper describes a grant project to digitize Cooke County, Texas ledgers. The project was funded in part by the National Historic Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) and involves digitizing and hosting several rare and unique collections representative of the Civil War. The UNT Archives partnered with the UNT Libraries Digital Projects Unit (DPU), which managed all stages of the digitization. This paper describes and examines the process the DPU implemented to digitize the Cooke County ledger collection; in doing so, it provides insight into the problems one might encounter, as well as recommendations for institutions that may be considering similar digital projects.

The First Stalin Mass Operation (1927) (open access)

The First Stalin Mass Operation (1927)

This article based on new archival documents introduces a new episode of mass operations, which took place in June and July of 1927 and was directed against the broad group of “anti-Soviet” forces. It preceded many practices of mass terror of the 1930s with judicial and extra-legal mechanisms. The goal of this article is to explain motivations, justifications, and mechanisms of this repressive campaign and to put this episode in the wider context of Soviet terror. Facing the combination of a perceived danger of war and real internal social hostility expressed in broad defeatism, both threatening the perpetuation of their governmental powers, authorities resorted to repressions. The 1927 episode highlights the factor of a perceived threat of war as a crucial motivating element in Soviet repressive tactics.

Shedding Light on the Tunnel and Light in Near-Death Experiences: A Case Study

Partial abstract: In this article, we present a case study of an adult male who experienced both gravity induced loss of consciousness (G-LOC) as a Korean War aviation cadet, including narrowing of his visual field to a point of light and also two subsequent transpersonal experiences -- a near-death experience (NDE) and an after-death communication (ADC) -- that both included a tunnel-and-light feature. His Near-Death Experience Scale scores for each experience and his comparison of the qualia of these experiences provide unique evidence in the debate about the nature and likely origins of such experiences. These data place more weight on the argument that the tunnel and light in transpersonal experiences cannot reasonably be attributed to loss of oxygen in the brain.

Hunting and Gathering on the Information Savanna (open access)

Hunting and Gathering on the Information Savanna

In this book, the authors offer three different arenas of nontrivial information seeking for our consideration: "Submarine Chasing" explores the thoughts of a highly decorated Cold War submarine hunter. "Bounty Hunting" involves a long and convoluted search for a reported bond skipper. "Engineering Design" presents a content analysis of the few works in epistemological foundations of engineering design activity. These stories, told at great length and in considerable detail, are framed within a foundational model that links the simple act of document seeking to the broader issue of making one's way through life in the physical world. In each case, the authors ramble, mull, and stumble upon ideas without the least prior constraint, developing some threads quite fully and leaving others to tease us, but never ever throwing us to the lions.

An Interactive Web-Based Dashboard to Examine Trending Topics: Application to Financial Journals (open access)

An Interactive Web-Based Dashboard to Examine Trending Topics: Application to Financial Journals

Understanding trends is helpful to identify future behaviors in the field, and the roles of people, places, and institutions in setting those trends. Although traditional clustering strategies can group articles into topics, these techniques do not focus on topics over limited timescales; additionally, even when articles are grouped, the generated results are extensive and difficult to navigate. To address these concerns, we create an interactive dashboard that helps an expert in the field to better understand and quantify trends in their area of research. Trend detection is performed using the time-biased document clustering introduced in Behpour et al. (2021) study. The developed and freely available web application enables users to detect well defined trending topics in financial journals by experimenting with various levels of temporal bias - from detecting short-timescale trends to allowing those trends to spread over longer times. Experts can readily drill down into the identified topics to understand their meaning through keywords, example articles, and time range. Overall, the interactive dashboard will allow experts in the field to sift through the vast literature to identify the concepts, people, places, and institutions most critical to the field.
