Ardmore Destroyed by Fire, April 18, 1895, Davis, Harley Institute
From a history compiled by Ralph Evans, Marietta. Account of the fire that destroyed the business district. The fire started in the Ab Burch livery stable, on Caddo, and burned stores up to the area of Main and Washington streets. Water from wells in the center of Main street was used. Names of the first organized fire department members, under Chief J. S. O'Mealy, are given. In 1902 Mayor Bob Dick and Lee Galt were instrumental in establishing a better water supply. Davis ( continued ) First wedding was between Mart Gibson and Lulu Ferguson. Bank was run by James Paulk, John A McIntosh, S. H. Davis and James Darby. In 1899 this became the Nation Bank, with Matt Wolf and Charles Hutchens in charge. J. B. McCluskey and J. A. McIntosh opened a separate bank for a short time. Incorporated in 1898 with H. H. Alien, Mayor, L. M. Frame, clerk, S. H. Davis, treasurer, and T. W. Poole, city marshal. Dr. T. P. Howell and Matt Wolf are mentioned. "Fort Washita Is Fading Into History", Durant Daily Democrat, May 31, 1959. Article concerning the history of the fort and the present condition of the buildings. Photographs of the buildings, in unrestored state, are included.
