Saudi Arabia: Post-War Issues and U.S. Relations
Saudi Arabia, a monarchy ruled by the Saudi dynasty, enjoys special importance in the international community because of its unique association with the Islamic religion and its oil wealth. Since the establishment of the modern Saudi kingdom in 1932, it has benefitted from a stable political system based on a smooth process of succession to the throne and an increasingly prosperous economy dominated by the oil sector. Decrees by King Fahd in March 1992 establishing an appointive consultative council and provincial councils and promulgating a basic law providing for certain citizens' rights could signal a gradual trend toward a more open political system.

Press Freedom in Saudi Arabia War Reporting: A Case Study of the Gulf and Yemen Wars
This study examined press freedom in Saudi Arabia coverage in two study periods, which are the Gulf and Yemen wars. Six Saudi newspapers, which represent Saudi regions, have been content analyzed. They are: Al Riyadh, Al Yaum, Al Nadwah, Mecca, Okaz, and Al Jazirah. The major questions are: What are the most salient issues Saudi newspapers dealt with in their editorials during the study period? What are the differences between the two periods of study? And what are the differences between the editorial features of the Gulf and Yemen wars? The normative theory-press freedom theory was conducted for this study. The results support the lack of press freedom during the Gulf War. In contrast, some newspapers have significantly improved their performance during the Yemen War, using a higher level of press freedom.

Oral History Interview with Paul R. Nixon
The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Paul R. Nixon. Nixon grew up in Kenya. After reporting for duty in Nairobi, he enlisted in the Army at 20 in Eritrea. He was assigned as an engineer near Cairo, Egypt. While on guard duty, he saw Faruk I, King of Egypt. His work involved mostly civil engineering. He won a trip to Palestine. After visiting, he then traveled through Iran and Iraq by plane to assist in building an airport in Dhahran, Arabia. Although VJ Day occurred while the work was still being laid out, the team still went forward with the work. The surveying team had to move out of the ARAMCO facilities when ships brought the construction team to the future airport. Then the surveying team went to a location halfway between Cairo and Dhahran, Duwaid, to built another emergency airport. He is sent by land back to Dhahran so that he can be a guide for the return trip. Then Nixon returned to Cairo. From Cairo he traveled to Alexandria, then to France and Belgium. Interview with executive of Caltex Petroluem Corporation, Leigh D. Josephson, including his personal experiences related to employment with Standard Oil of California, his assignment to Bahrain and transfer to Caltex, the construction of Ras Tanura refinery in Saudi Arabia, and the bombing of the Bapco refinery in Bahrain. Josephson also talks about refinery operations in Bahrain during and after World War II, his various positions and responsibilities with Caltex and Bapco, work in Bahrain and the Philippines, his personal relationship with the Bahraini royal family, and the OPEC and Arab oil embargoes in 1967.

The United States and Saudi Arabia have long-standing economic and defense ties, and the U.S. has a strong security commitment to Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia was a key member of the allied coalition that expelled Iraqi forces from Kuwait in 1991. Bombing attacks against several U.S. and foreign-operated installations in Saudi Arabia have raised some concerns about security of U.S. citizens and what appears to be growing anti-Americanism in some segments of the Saudi population. Other principal issues of bilateral interest include security in the post-war Gulf region, the Saudi position on the Arab-Israeli conflict, arms transfers to Saudi Arabia, Saudi external aid programs, bilateral trade relationships and oil production, and Saudi policies on human rights and democracy.
