Characteristics of Urban Runoff from Grange Hall Creek at Northglenn, Adams County, Colorado
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to (1) determine quantity and quality of urban runoff from the upper Grange Hall Creek drainage basin in Northglenn; (2) identify constituents exceeding water-quality standards for agricultural waters; (3) compare differences in quality between dry-weather flow, snowmelt runoff and rainfall runoff; (4) determine rainfall-runoff relationships; (5) investigate relationships between constituent concentrations, specific conductance, and streamflow; and (6) suggest, where appropriate, alternatives of urban-runoff management.

Controlled air incineration of hazardous chemical waste at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. [Polychlorinated biphenyl, pentachlorophenol]
An incineration system, originally demonstrated as a transuranic (TRU) waste volume-reduction process, is described. The production-scale controlled air incinerator using commercially available equipment and technology was modified for solid radioactive waste service. The same incinerator and offgas treatment system has been modified further for use in evaluating the destruction of hazardous liquid wastes such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and hazardous solid wastes such as pentachlorophenol (PCP)-treated wood. Results of a PCP-treated wood incineration test show a PCP destruction efficiency of greater than 99.99% in the primary chamber for the operating conditions investigated. Conditions and results for this test are described.

Dynamic response of containment vessels to blast loading
The dynamic response of steel, spherical containment vessels loaded by internal explosive blast was studied by experiments, computations, and analysis. Instrumentation used in the experiments consisted of strain and pressure gauges and a velocity interferometer. Data were used to rank the blast wave mitigating properties of several filler materials and to develop a scaling law relating strain, filler material, and explosive energy or explosive mass.

Four-feedplate operation of ZT-40 with passive crowbars
This report summarizes the measurements made on the ZT-40 reversed-field pinch during the start-up on October 5, 1979, until May 1980, when the power crowbar circuitry became operational. The material contained herein pertains to the operation of ZT-40 with four current feedpoints, passive crowbars, and a nonconducting, high-purity alumina liner. The plasma properties are given for reversed-field pinches obtained either by aided or self-reversal and for nonreversed-field (stabilized) pinches. It is demonstrated that ZT-40 was capable of being ohmically heated to approx. 100 eV electron temperatures during the approx. 0.1 ms rise to peak current. Operation is obtained in which the fluctuations during start-up are observed to decrease later in the discharge, producing quiet periods of approx. 0.1 ms.

Numerical simulation of fracture
The Bedded Crack Model (BCM) is a constitutive model for brittle materials. It is based on effective modulus theory and makes use of a generalized Griffith criterion for crack growth. It is used in a solid dynamic computer code to simulate stress wave propagation and fracture in rock. A general description of the model is given and then the theoretical basis for it is presented. Some effects of finite cell size in numerical simulations are discussed. The use of the BCM is illustrated in simulations of explosive fracture of oil shale. There is generally good agreement between the calculations and data from field experiments.

Performance characterization of pneumatic single pellet injection system
The Oak Ridge National Laboratory single-shot pellet injector, which has been used in plasma fueling experiments on ISX and PDX, has been upgraded and extensively instrumented in order to study the gas dynamics of pneumatic pellet injection. An improved pellet transport line was developed which utilizes a 0.3-cm-diam by 100-cm-long guide tube. Pellet gun performance was characterized by measurements of breech and muzzle dynamic pressures and by pellet velocity and mass determinations. Velocities up to 1.4 km/s were achieved for intact hydrogen pellets using hydrogen propellant at 5-MPa breech pressure. These data have been compared with new pellet acceleration calculations which include the effects of propellant friction, heat transfer, time-dependent boundary conditions, and finite gun geometry. These results provide a basis for the extrapolation of present-day pneumatic injection system performance to velocities in excess of 2 km/s.

West Hackberry Brine Disposal Project pre-discharge characterization. Final report
The physical, chemical and biological attributes are described for: (1) a coastal marine environment centered about a Department of Energy Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) brine disposal site 11.4 km off the southwest coast of Louisiana; and (2) the lower Calcasieu and Sabine estuarine systems that provide leach waters for the SPR project. A three month sampling effort, February through April 1981, and previous investigations from the study area are integrated to establish baseline information for evaluation of impacts from brine disposal in the nearshore marine waters and from freshwater withdrawal from the coastal marsh of the Chenier Plain. January data are included for some tasks that sampled while testing and mobilizing their instruments prior to the February field effort. The study addresses the areas of physical oceanography, estuarine hydrology and hydrography, water and sediment quality, benthos, nekton, phytoplankton, zooplankton, and data management.
