Physics with ETA mesons (open access)

Physics with ETA mesons

Since the advent of pion factories, an impressive amount of information about the nuclear dynamics of the ..delta..(1232) pion- nucleon resonance has been obtained. The study of this isospin-3/2 resonance has greatly benefited from the fact that ..pi../sup /minus//n and ..pi../sup +/p systems are pure I = 3/2 states, which couple only to the ..delta.. in the resonance region. Such isospin selectivity of the pion does not exist, however, for the I = 1/2 N* resonances because it is not possible to form a pure I = 1/2 state with a pion and a nucleon. Eta mesons have zero isospin. Consequently, the /eta/N systems are in a pure I = 1/2 state, and /eta/ can be used to tag those N* resonances to which it strongly couples. We will briefly review the ..pi..N interaction from the threshold region to c.m. energy ..sqrt..s approx. =1600 MeV. We shall see how improved ..pi..N data can help the study of ..pi..N interactions. I shall discuss what new information about the hadronic interaction can be learned from the study of eta production in pp collisions. The behavior of eta meson in nuclei will be discussed. The interesting question of the quark structure of /eta/(549) …

Ecological baseline study of the Yakima Firing Center proposed land acquisition: A status report (open access)

Ecological baseline study of the Yakima Firing Center proposed land acquisition: A status report

This report provides baseline environmental information for the property identified for possible expansion of the Yakima Firing Center. Results from this work provide general descriptions of the animals and major plant communities present. A vegetation map derived from a combination of on-site surveillance and remotely sensed imagery is provided as part of this report. Twenty-seven wildlife species of special interest (protected, sensitive, furbearer, game animal, etc.), and waterfowl, were observed on the proposed expansion area. Bird censuses revealed 13 raptorial species (including four of special interest: bald eagle, golden eagle, osprey, and prairie falcon); five upland game bird species (sage grouse, California quail, chukar, gray partridge, and ring-necked pheasant); common loons (a species proposed for state listing as threatened); and five other species of special interest (sage thrasher, loggerhead shrike, mourning dove, sage sparrow, and long-billed curlew). Estimates of waterfowl abundance are included for the Priest Rapids Pool of the Columbia River. Six small mammal species were captured during this study; one, the sagebrush vole, is a species of special interest. Two large animal species, mule deer and elk, were noted on the site. Five species of furbearing animals were observed (coyote, beaver, raccoon, mink, and striped skunk). Four species …

The creation of high energy densities with antimatter beams (open access)

The creation of high energy densities with antimatter beams

The use of antiprotons (and antideuterons) for the study of the behavior of nuclear matter at high energy density is considered. It is shown that high temperatures and high energy densities can be achieved for small volumes. Also investigated is the strangeness production in antimatter annihilation. It is found that the high rate of Lambda production seen in a recent experiment is easily understood. The Lambda and K-short rapidity distributions are also reproduced by the model considered. 11 refs., 6 figs.

Minidoka Dam Wildlife Impact Assessment: Final Report.

A wildlife impact assessment has been developed for the US Bureau of Reclamation's Minidoka Dam and Reservoir in south central Idaho. This assessment was conducted to fulfill requirements of the Fish and Wildlife Program. Specific objectives of this study included the following: select target wildlife species, and identify their current status and management goals; estimate the net effects on target wildlife species resulting from hydroelectric development and operation; recommend protection, mitigation, and enhancement goals for target wildlife species affected by hydroelectric development and operation; and consult and coordinate impact assessment activities with the Northwest Power Planning Council, Bonneville Power Administration, US Bureau of Reclamation, Bureau of Land Management, Shoshone-Bannock Tribes, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Pacific Northwest Utilities Conference Committee, and other entities expressing interest in the project. 62 refs., 2 figs., 11 tabs.

Abstracted publications related to the Hanford environment, 1980 to 1988 (open access)

Abstracted publications related to the Hanford environment, 1980 to 1988

This abstracted bibliography provides a reference to the diverse environmental activities conducted on the Hanford Site from 1980 through 1988. It includes 500 reports and articles that were prepared largely by onsite contractors and the Department of Energy. Documents contained here were separated into eight subject areas: air and atmosphere, aquatic ecology, effluents and wastes, geology and hydrology, Hanford Site, radioactivity, terrestrial ecology, and socioeconomics. These areas form the basis of a key word index, which is intended to help the reader locate subjects of interest. An author index is also included.

Trends in radionuclide concentrations for selected wildlife and food products near the Hanford Site from 1971 through 1988 (open access)

Trends in radionuclide concentrations for selected wildlife and food products near the Hanford Site from 1971 through 1988

From 1971 through 1988 at least 40 species of wildlife and 27 different types of food products were collected and analyzed for radionuclides as part of the Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL) Environmental Monitoring Program. This report summarizes the results of these analyses for sample types collected for all or most of the 18-year period. The objectives of this summary investigation were to identify long-term trends or significant year-to-year changes in radionuclide concentrations and, if possible, relate any observed changes in radionuclide concentrations to their sources and probable causes. Statistical techniques were employed to test for long-term trends. Conspicuous short-term changes in radionuclide concentrations were identified from inspection of the data. 30 refs., 16 figs., 4 tabs.

Elk and deer studies related to the Basalt Waste Isolation Project (open access)

Elk and deer studies related to the Basalt Waste Isolation Project

A study of elk (Cervus elaphus) and deer (Odocoileus hemionus) was conducted in the vicinity of planned site characterization activities for the Basalt Waste Isolation Project (BWIP). Both species are known to be sensitive to disturbance and are considered important species because they are recreationally and/or commercially valuable. The principal objectives of the study were to (1) estimate pre-activity (site characterization) recruitment of deer and elk, (2) characterize deer and elk use of limited habitats critical to their survival (e.g., riparian areas), (3) describe preferential habitat use by deer and elk during critical seasons (i.e., winter and summer), and (4) document pre-activity distributions of seasonal home range centers of deer and elk. Early termination of BWIP prevented some of the objectives from being fully addressed. Fifteen adult elk (11 females and 4 males) and 19 female deer equipped with radio transmitters were studied on the Arid Lands Ecology (ALE) Reserve from February through December 1987. More than 1800 relocations of the marked elk and deer were made during aerial and ground tracking sessions. Deer confined their activities to within 2 km of water sources. In contrast, elk used 6-12 times the average area used by deer. As with deer, female …
