Environmental characterization of two potential locations at Hanford for a new production reactor

This report describes various environmental aspects of two areas on the Hanford Site that are potential locations for a New Production Reactor (NPR). The area known as the Skagit Hanford Site is considered the primary or reference site. The second area, termed the Firehouse Site, is considered the alternate site. The report encompasses an environmental characterization of these two potential NPR locations. Eight subject areas are covered: geography and demography; ecology; meteorology; hydrology; geology; cultural resources assessment; economic and social effects of station construction and operation; and environmental monitoring. 80 refs., 68 figs., 109 tabs.

Measurement and Correlation of Conditions for Entrapment and Mobilization of Residual Oil: Final Report, January 1981-March 1984

This is the final report of a two-year project which had four major task areas. A substantial portion of work carried out under this project has been reported in detail in journals, the First Annual Report to the Department of Energy or in manuscripts which have been submitted for publication and are available on request. In such cases only major conclusions are reported, along with reference to the detailed accounts. Work is reported for the following 4 major tasks: (1) residual saturation measured by laboratory core flooding (core flooding experiments, contact angle measurements); (2) effect of high pressure gradients on residual oil saturations (capillary number relationships, residual oil flushing at wellbore, electrical resistivities at reduced residual oil saturations); (3) mechanisms of mobilization and entrapment of residual oil (magnitude and detailed structure of residual oil saturations, effect of interfacial tension on the stability of displacement fronts, effect of pore shape on displacement curvatures); and (4) residual oil structure (analysis of blob-size distributions by Coulter counter, changes in residual oil structure with oil recovery). 53 references, 76 figures, 46 tables.

Retort No. 27 was ignited using a new procedure and 47 days of operation were completed in the quarter. For retort No. 28 air injection and off gas piping and manifolding was completed along with the installation of electrical and instrumentation wiring. The off gas processing plant for the two retorts was completed and an initial shakedown run made.

Parcperdue geopressure-geothermal project. Study a geopressured reservoir by drilling and producing a well in a limited geopressured water sand. Final technical report, September 28, 1979-December 31, 1983

The behavior of geopressured reservoirs was investigated by drilling and producing a well in small, well defined, geopressured reservoir; and performing detailed pressure transient analysis together with geological, geophysical, chemical, and physical studies. The Dow-DOE L. R. Sweezy No. 1 well was drilled to a depth of 13,600 feet in Parcperdue field, just south of Lafayette, Louisiana, and began production in April, 1982. The production zone was a poorly consolidated sandstone which constantly produced sand into the well stream, causing damage to equipment and causing other problems. The amount of sand production was kept manageable by limiting the flow rate to below 10,000 barrels per day. Reservoir properties of size, thickness, depth, temperature, pressure, salinity, porosity, and permeability were close to predicted values. The reservoir brine was undersaturated with respect to gas, containing approximately 20 standard cubic feet of gas per barrel of brine. Shale dewatering either did not occur or was insignificant as a drive mechanism. Production terminated when the gravel-pack completion failed and the production well totally sanded in, February, 1983. Total production up to the sanding incident was 1.94 million barrels brine and 31.5 million standard cubic feet gas.

Analysis of flow data from the DOW/DOE L. R. Sweezy No. 1 well

This topical report presents the results of work to-date on the analysis and simulation of flow and pressure data from the testing of the L.R. Sweezy No. 1 well. Analysis of drawdown data indicates a formation permeability of around 126 md, and a flow-rate dependent skin. The conventional analysis techniques were, however, found to be inadequate for analyzing the buildup data. The formation properties inferred from the drawdown were used together with the CHARGR simulator to simulate the production history of the Sweezy well. The calculated drawdown response displays excellent agreement with the measured data; such agreement was, however, not obtained for the buildup phase of the tests. Parametric calculations designed to investigate the anomalous buildup response suggest that this behavior may be the result of stress-induced hysteresis in formation properties, shale recharge, and long-term formation creep. A research program to further characterize the observed pressure response is outlined.

Characterizing the parallelism in rule-based expert systems

A brief review of two classes of rule-based expert systems is presented, followed by a detailed analysis of potential sources of parallelism at the production or rule level, the subrule level (including match, select, and act parallelism), and at the search level (including AND, OR, and stream parallelism). The potential amount of parallelism from each source is discussed and characterized in terms of its granularity, inherent serial constraints, efficiency, speedup, dynamic behavior, and communication volume, frequency, and topology. Subrule parallelism will yield, at best, two- to tenfold speedup, and rule level parallelism will yield a modest speedup on the order of 5 to 10 times. Rule level can be combined with OR, AND, and stream parallelism in many instances to yield further parallel speedups.

This assessment addresses the impacts to the wildlife populations and wildlife habitats due to the Libby Dam project on the Kootenai River and previous mitigation of these losses. The current assessment documents the best available information concerning the impacts to the wildlife populations inhabiting the project area prior to construction of the dam and creation of the reservoir. Many of the impacts reported in this assessment differ from those contained in the earlier document compiled by the Fish and Wildlife Service; however, this document is a thorough compilation of the available data (habitat and wildlife) and, though conservative, attempts to realistically assess the impacts related to the Libby Dam project. Where appropriate the impacts resulting from highway construction and railroad relocation were included in the assessment. This was consistent with the previous assessments.

This report documents best available information concerning the wildlife species impacted and the degree of the impact. A target species list was developed to focus the impact assessment and to direct mitigation efforts. Many non-target species also incurred impacts but are not discussed in this report. All wildlife habitats inundated by the two reservoirs are represented by the target species. It was assumed the numerous non-target species also affected will be benefited by the mitigation measures adopted for the target species. Impacts addressed are limited to those directly attributable to the loss of habitat and displacement of wildlife populations due to the construction and operation of the two hydroelectric projects. Secondary impacts, such as the relocation of railroads and highways, and the increase of the human population, were not considered. In some cases, both positive and negative impacts were assessed; and the overall net effect was reported. The loss/gain estimates reported represent impacts considered to have occurred during one point in time except where otherwise noted. When possible, quantitative estimates were developed based on historical information from the area or on data from similar areas. Wildlife Impact Assessment and Summary of Previous Mitigation Related to Hydroelectric Projects in Montana, Phase I, Volume Two (A), Clark Fork Projects, Thompson Falls Dam, Operator, Montana Power Company.

The Thompson Falls Dam inundated approximately 347 acres of wildlife habitat that likely included conifer forests, deciduous bottoms, mixed conifer-deciduous forests and grassland/hay meadows. Additionally, at least one island, and several gravel bars were inundated when the river was transformed into a reservoir. The loss of riparian and riverine habitat adversely affected the diverse wildlife community inhabiting the lower Clark Fork River area. Quantitative loss estimates were determined for selected target species based on best available information. The loss estimates were based on inundation of the habitat capable of supporting the target species. Whenever possible, loss estimates bounds were developed by determining ranges of impacts based on density estimates and/or acreage loss estimates. Of the twelve target species or species groups, nine were assessed as having net negative impacts. 86 refs., 2 figs., 5 tabs.

This assessment addresses the impacts to the wildlife populations and wildlife habitats due to the Hungry Horse Dam project on the South Fork of the Flathead River and previous mitigation of theses losses. In order to develop and focus mitigation efforts, it was first necessary to estimate wildlife and wildlife hatitat losses attributable to the construction and operation of the project. The purpose of this report was to document the best available information concerning the degree of impacts to target wildlife species. Indirect benefits to wildlife species not listed will be identified during the development of alternative mitigation measures. Wildlife species incurring positive impacts attributable to the project were identified.
