Rameau's "Le Berger Fidèle": An Analysis for Performance (open access)

Rameau's "Le Berger Fidèle": An Analysis for Performance

It is assumed that the performer of Le Berger Fidele will be capable of a more accurate performance and a more historically authoritative interpretation if he thoroughly understands all musical aspects of the cantata. Due to the lack of written directions from earlier composers, it is important that the performer research the period, composer, and composition to insure a more accurate, interpretive performance. The first chapter delves into the life and works of Rameau. The second chapter follows the development of the French solo cantata from the beginning of the art song to its culmination. Ornaments peculiar to French cantata are discussed in the third chapter. In Chapter IV each pair of recitative and aria is examined and analyzed according to form, harmony, rhythm, melody (including phrasing), dynamics and ornaments, and instrumentation. The cantata is built up in a succession of three arias. Each aria is da capo in form and is preceded by a recitative and an instrumental introduction. Each air is concluded with an instrumental postlude.

The Trumpet in Baroque Opera: its Use as a Solo, Obbligato, and Ensemble Instrument (open access)

The Trumpet in Baroque Opera: its Use as a Solo, Obbligato, and Ensemble Instrument

The process of the organization of the orchestra began with the rise of opera; considered on a broad scale this process divides itself into two periods, the first terminated by the deaths of Bach and Handel (1600-1759) and the second beginning with the complete change of orchestral sound evident in the symphonies of Haydn and Mozart during the second half of the eighteenth century. It is the first of these two periods that witnessed the composers of art music exploiting the natural trumpet, an instrument long associated with court, camp, and field, to the extent that they developed a vast repertoire of trumpet music characterized by its virtuosic technical requirements.

The French Cantata: A Survey and Thematic Catalog

The musical compositions known collectively as the French cantata have remained relatively unknown since their popularity waned in the middle of the 18th century. In order to establish a foundation for their systematic study and to bring them to the attention of a wider audience, this survey and catalog have been prepared. The cultural mileu in which the cantatas were written, their formal structure, and principles related to their performance have been presented along with pertinent biographical and bibliographical information.

Mechanical strain of large, multifilament Nb/sub 3/Sn conductors for fusion magnets (open access)

Mechanical strain of large, multifilament Nb/sub 3/Sn conductors for fusion magnets

The effects of mechanical strain on the high-field critical current, I/sub c/, of two Nb/sub 3/Sn conductors were measured. Static strains up to 0.9 percent and cyclic strains to 0.6 percent were used; I/sub c/ was measured at fields up to 12 T. Critical current, which increased with strain in all cases, peaked at approximately 0.3 percent and decreased for higher strains. For strains less than 0.8 percent, the change in I/sub c/ was reversible; permanent damage only occurred in one conductor for strains near 0.9 percent. No effect of cyclic strains, 0.6 percent in amplitude, could be detected up to 500 cycles.

The Choral-Orchestral Works of Hector Berlioz (open access)

The Choral-Orchestral Works of Hector Berlioz

In this study the choral-orchestral compositions produced by Hector Berlioz are examined in detail for characteristics of musical form, textual setting, and methods of scoring for chorus and orchestra. Reasons for the preponderance of the choral-orchestral medium in Berlioz' output are examined in two introductory chapters. The initial chapter concerns Berlioz' personal experiences as an observer, conductor, and critic of choral music, while the second is devoted to Parisian customs in regard to the choral-orchestral medium during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Included in the historical chapter is a discussion of the haute-contre (high tenor or countertenor) voice preferred in French choruses of that period plus a short review of French orchestral practices, operatic choruses, the French Chapel, Parisian concert societies, and the Paris Conservatory. Especially important is the segment on revolutionary musical fetes which fostered grandiose compositions for chorus and instruments of extremely simple structure. Berlioz' sense of form was governed by his Gallic heritage and for this reason many critics have accused him of formlessness, when in fact his compositions invaribly revolve around a succinct formal plan, admirably executed. Berlioz added to the conservative French tradition which favored the strophe and the Rondeau (an unvarying refrain following …

Development and implementation of computer assistance for cost estimating (open access)

Development and implementation of computer assistance for cost estimating

The development of the LACCE, the Los Alamos computerized cost estimating system, is described. During the life of this development, complexity has oscillated back and forth between bare necessity and luxurious wants. As presently structured, LACCE offers the user a power that has been proven beneficial in LASL operations. The complexity involved has been well masked and exists largely on the computer side so that the user is comfortably unaware. The atmosphere of the environment during this development should be noted as highly significant in the success. Management, estimators and systems designers have worked side-by-side; management interest in the success of the venture was understood by all; and skills and expertise overlapped to form a chain with no missing links. It is apparent that LACCE is not complete. More powerful means of modeling and data base maintenance are foreseen already, as well as code simplification, but the existing system gives LASL managers the ability to make much better decisions than just a few years ago.

An Edition of Verse and Solo Anthems by William Boyce (open access)

An Edition of Verse and Solo Anthems by William Boyce

The English musician William Boyce was known as an organist for the cathedral as well as the Chapel Royal, a composer of both secular and sacred music, a director of large choral festivals, and the editor of Cathedral Music, the finest eighteenth-century edition of English Church music. Among Boyce's compositions for the church are many examples of verse and solo anthems. Part II of this thesis consists of an edition of one verse and three solo anthems selected from British Museum manuscript Additional 40497, transcribed into modern notation, and provided with a realization for organ continuo. Material prefatory to the edition itself, including a biography, a history of the verse and solo anthem from the English Reformation to the middle of the eighteenth century, a discussion .of the characteristics of Boyce's verse and solo anthems, and editorial notes constitute Part I.
