Strategies Employed by School Administrators to Prevent or Reduce Gang-Related Activity and Violence in Selected High Schools in a North Central Texas School District

This research investigated the strategies used by school administrators in selected high schools to prevent or reduce gang-related activity and violence. Interviews were conducted with six high school principals, six assistant principals, fifteen staff members and eleven students. All of the students were gang members. The results of the study showed that there are gang members in all schools, but that their gang activity at school is curtailed by some specific strategies.

Saving Tons at the Register (open access)

Saving Tons at the Register

Duct losses have a significant effect on the efficiency of delivering space cooling to U.S. homes. This effect is especially dramatic during peak demand periods where half of the cooling equipment's output can be wasted. Improving the efficiency of a duct system can save energy, but can also allow for downsizing of cooling equipment without sacrificing comfort conditions. Comfort, and hence occupant acceptability, is determined not only by steady-state temperatures, but by how long it takes to pull down the temperature during cooling start-up, such as when the occupants come home on a hot summer afternoon. Thus the delivered tons of cooling at the register during start-up conditions are critical to customer acceptance of equipment downsizing strategies. We have developed a simulation technique which takes into account such things as weather, heat-transfer (including hot attic conditions), airflow, duct tightness, duct location and insulation, and cooling equipment performance to determine the net tons of cooling delivered to occupied space. Capacity at the register has been developed as an improvement over equipment tonnage as a system sizing measure. We use this concept to demonstrate that improved ducts and better system installation is as important as equipment size, with analysis of pull-down capability …

A Comparison of Teachers' Sense of Efficacy of Traditionally and Alternatively Certified First Year Teachers (open access)

A Comparison of Teachers' Sense of Efficacy of Traditionally and Alternatively Certified First Year Teachers

The purpose of this study was to compare the self-efficacy of two groups of first year teachers working in a large urban school district in North Texas. Twenty-eight of the participants were certified teachers. Ten participants held college degrees unrelated to teaching and were undergoing an alternative certification process. The Teacher Efficacy Scale was administered at the beginning and the end of the school year. Data from this scale was analyzed to determine if there were differences between the regular certification teachers and the alternative certification teachers at the beginning and the end of the school year, and to determine if their sense of efficacy changed over the course of the school year.

An Investigation of Personal Investment Levels Among Nonmusic Major Piano Students Using Portfolio Assessment

The purpose of this study was to compare personal investment levels among nonmusic major piano students in the contexts of portfolio and teacher-directed assessment. Three problems were addressed: 1) identifying students' perceptions of direction, persistence, continuing motivation, intensity, and performance in the context of teacher-directed goal setting, choice of instructional activities, and evaluation of performance; 2) identifying students' perceptions of the five personal investment behaviors in the context of portfolio assessment; and 3) comparing student perceptions as identified in problems one and two.

Building commissioning: The key to quality assurance (open access)

Building commissioning: The key to quality assurance

This Guide is written to aid building owners and retrofit project managers currently participating in the Rebuild America program. The Guide provides information on implementing building commissioning projects that will optimize the results of existing building equipment improvements and retrofits projects. It should be used in coordination with Rebuild America`s Community Partnership Handbook. The Handbook describes, in detail, eight important steps necessary for planning and carrying out a community-wide energy-efficiency program. In step number 7 of the Handbook, commissioning is shown to be an integral aspect of implementing a building retrofit. The commissioning process ensures that a facility is safe, efficient, comfortable, and conducive to the presumed activities for which it was constructed. Rebuild America strongly encourages its partners to incorporate commissioning into their retrofit projects. By verifying the correct installation, functioning, operation, and maintenance of equipment, the commissioning process ensures that efficiency measures will continue to deliver benefits over the long term. Although commissioning can take place after the equipment has been installed, it is more effective when it takes place over the entire equipment installation process.

Social Validation of Intervention Procedures for Emotionally Disturbed Students : Effects on Regular Education Students

The purpose of this study was to explore regular education student perceptions of the effects of implementing behavioral interventions for seriously emotionally disturbed students (SED) in the regular classroom. Student perceptions of classroom friction or disruptiveness, apathy, and general enjoyment or satisfaction were evaluated. It was predicted that regular education students would report more classroom friction, increased apathy, and less satisfaction when interventions were implemented in the regular classroom for a target SED student.

Center for Fuel Cell Research and Applications development phase. Final report (open access)

Center for Fuel Cell Research and Applications development phase. Final report

The deployment and operation of clean power generation is becoming critical as the energy and transportation sectors seek ways to comply with clean air standards and the national deregulation of the utility industry. However, for strategic business decisions, considerable analysis is required over the next few years to evaluate the appropriate application and value added from this emerging technology. To this end the Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC) is proposing a three-year industry-driven project that centers on the creation of ``The Center for Fuel Cell Research and Applications.`` A collaborative laboratory housed at and managed by HARC, the Center will enable a core group of six diverse participating companies--industry participants--to investigate the economic and operational feasibility of proton-exchange-membrane (PEM) fuel cells in a variety of applications (the core project). This document describes the unique benefits of a collaborative approach to PEM applied research, among them a shared laboratory concept leading to cost savings and shared risks as well as access to outstanding research talent and lab facilities. It also describes the benefits provided by implementing the project at HARC, with particular emphasis on HARC`s history of managing successful long-term research projects as well as its experience in dealing with industry …
