Language Behaviors and Social Strategies of English as Second Language and English as Primary Language Preschool Children During Computer Assisted Instruction Experiences (open access)

Language Behaviors and Social Strategies of English as Second Language and English as Primary Language Preschool Children During Computer Assisted Instruction Experiences

This study describes the language behaviors and social strategies of English as Second Language (ESL) and English as Primary Language (EPL) pre-kindergarten students during cooperative Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) experiences. Thirty-three pre-kindergarten subjects ages four to five years, were videotaped at two personal computers during self-selected center time. The sources of data for this descriptive study were a parent computer survey, videotapes, a subject interview derived from the Young Children's Computer Inventory, and written records.

Comparison of planar helical undulator designs for spear beamline five (open access)

Comparison of planar helical undulator designs for spear beamline five

There is an increasing demand for circularly polarized soft x-rays in the study of magnetic materials, biological molecules, and other systems that exhibit circular dichroism. At present, most experiments have been done with bending magnet radiation that is circularly polarized above and below the horizontal midplane of the storage ring. A number of insertion devices generate elliptically polarized x-rays, such as bifilar solenoids, elliptical and asymmetric wigglers, crossed undulators, and planar helical undulators. Elliptically polarized light is generated when electrons enter a helical magnetic field; the helicity of the field determines the helicity of the x-ray emission. Among the various technologies, the pure permanent magnet planar helical undulator is probably the best choice for installation on BLV in summer, 1993. This approach was pioneered by Pascal Elleaume at ESRF; he has installed a device of this type called `Helios`. Richard Walker and Shigemi Sasaki have developed alternative planar helical undulators, which improve on the basic design of Elleaume. This proposal is a discussion of planar helical undulator strategies from which implementation choices can be made. We will consider only pure RCP and LCP sources, since we are trying only to span the range from 500--1000 eV. If we needed a …

A Content Analysis of School Reading Textbooks in Taiwan and in Texas (open access)

A Content Analysis of School Reading Textbooks in Taiwan and in Texas

The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare the values, beliefs, and ideas in school reading textbooks (Readers) in Taiwan and in Texas. It intended to examine the social control function of school Readers, with which a culture deliberately molds its young generation. This study employed primarily qualitative methods. The collection of data used the technique of content analysis, student surveys, and teacher expert panel discussions. The analysis of data followed a constant comparative approach. The themes shared by the two sets of Readers included family, friends, humans and living creatures, political ideals, reading/writing, appreciation of nature, science, indomitable spirit, turning danger into safety, setting goals, education, desirable and undesirable qualities or behaviors. Despite the similarities of these themes, the substance or focus of them may vary. The themes unique to the Texas Readers were content knowledge, cultural diversity, dilemma and choice, observations about people, words, tomorrow's technology, winning, and general truth. The themes unique to the Taiwan Readers included life philosophy, learning, necessary difficulties, sensitivity, and military strategies. The theme occurring most frequently in both sets of Readers was the desirable qualities or behaviors. The values advocated in the Taiwan Readers were idealistic and had a society-centered …

Adult Literacy and New Technologies: Tools for a Lifetime

Adult education needs are difficult to define and difficult to meet; what constitutes adequate literacy changes continually as the demands facing individuals grow more complex. This report is an attempt to identify those capabilities, along with limitations, and outline how new information technologies can be marshaled to meet the goal of a fully literate citizenry.

Transfer Retention at City College in Engineering (TRACC). Final Report, September 30, 1992--September 29, 1993 (open access)

Transfer Retention at City College in Engineering (TRACC). Final Report, September 30, 1992--September 29, 1993

Goal of TRACC (Transfer Retention at City College in Engineering) is to increase the number of minority transfer students from community colleges who receive Bachelors degrees in engineering and computer science from CCNY. TRACC offers qualified students access to academic and social support services. TRACC has shown promising results in its first year; TRACC student pass rates in coursework were higher compared to a cohort group of non-TRACC students. They report that tutoring and enrichment courses are valuable and contribute to better performance in classes. The advisement process is utilized and is seen as beneficial. Other services provided by TRACC are viewed by students as contributing to overall career development and enhanced social life at CCNY. TRACC was the College`s first attempt to address the needs of transfer students.

Sandia National Laboratories Institutional Plan FY1994--1999 (open access)

Sandia National Laboratories Institutional Plan FY1994--1999

This report presents a five year plan for the laboratory. This plan takes advantage of the technical strengths of the lab and its staff to address issues of concern to the nation on a scope much broader than Sandia`s original mission, while maintaining the general integrity of the laboratory. The plan proposes initiatives in a number of technologies which overlap the needs of its customers and the strengths of its staff. They include: advanced manufacturing technology; electronics; information and computational technology; transportation energy technology and infrastructure; environmental technology; energy research and technology development; biomedical systems engineering; and post-cold war defense imperatives.

Workforce Transition Modeling Environment user`s guide (open access)

Workforce Transition Modeling Environment user`s guide

The Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL) was tasked by the US Department of Energy Albuquerque Field Office (DOE-AL) to develop a workforce assessment and transition planning tool to support integrated decision making at a single DOE installation. The planning tool permits coordinated, integrated workforce planning to manage growth, decline, or transition within a DOE installation. The tool enhances the links and provides commonality between strategic, programmatic, and operations planners and human resources. Successful development and subsequent complex-wide implementation of the model also will facilitate planning at the national level by enforcing a consistent format on data that are now collected by installations in corporate-specific formats that are not amenable to national-level analyses. The workforce assessment and transition planning tool, the Workforce Transition Modeling Environment (WFTME), consists of two components: the Workforce Transition Model and the Workforce Budget Constraint Model. The Workforce Transition Model, the preponderant of the two, assists decision makers identify and evaluate alternatives for transitioning the current workforce to meet the skills required to support projected workforce requirements. The Workforce Budget Constraint Model helps estimate the number of personnel that will be affected by a given workforce budget increase or decrease and assists in identifying how the corresponding hirings …

Self-Assessment of Literacy Growth in Young Children (open access)

Self-Assessment of Literacy Growth in Young Children

In this study, 78 kindergarten and first-grade children were interviewed about their writing to identify indicators of self-assessment. Writing samples for each participant were saved over a three month period, then compared and discussed by the child. Results indicated that these young children did engage in self:-assessment behaviors. The classroom teachers were asked to place the participants in their classes along a writing continuum known as a Writing Band. Graphs were presented to show the writing levels of the children by classroom. In addition, each classroom was surveyed to document events which promote literacy development within the framework of an integrated curriculum. Writing samples for each child were collected and kept in a portfolio. Participants were interviewed regarding the contents of the portfolio. Children in two of the kindergarten classes were interviewed using 5 samples collected over a 2 1/2 month time period, and all other participants were interviewed using 6 writing samples collected over a 3 month period. Findings indicated that not only did these young children recognize growth in their writing, but they also assessed that growth based on outward, physical features of their writing. The writing ability of each child at the beginning of the study did …
