Soldier Boys of Texas: The Seventh Texas Infantry in World War I

This study first offers a political, social, and economic overview of Texas during the first two decades of the twentieth century, including reaction in the Lone Star state to the declaration of war against Germany in April, 1917; the fear of saboteurs and foreign-born citizens; and the debate on raising a wartime army through a draft or by volunteerism. Then, focusing in-depth on northwest Texas, the study examines the Texas National Guard unit recruited there, the Seventh Texas Infantry Regiment. Using primarily the selective service registration cards of a sample of 1,096 members of the regiment, this study presents a portrait of the officers and enlisted soldiers of the Seventh Texas based on age, occupation, marital status, dependents and other criteria, something that has not been done in studies of World War I soldiers. Next, the regiment's training at Camp Bowie, near Fort Worth, Texas, is described, including the combining of the Seventh Texas with the First Oklahoma Infantry to form the 142nd Infantry Regiment of the Thirty-Sixth Division. Oral History Interview with Robert Steenhagen, October 20, 2010

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Robert Steenhagen. Steenhagen was drafted into the Army in mid-1942. He was sent to the Pacific as a replacement and joined the Americal Division on Guadalcanal. Steenhagen was then sent to Bougainville. There he suffered from malaria, yellow jaundice, and jungle rot. He discusses conducting patrols and life in a fox hole. Steenhagen traveled with the Americal to the Philippines where he was wounded. He talks about his time at the hospital and going AWOL to rejoin his unit. Steenhagen fought with his unit on Cebu until the war ended. He details the combat conditions and the loss of several inexperienced lieutenants (90-day wonders). Steenhagen was part of the Occupation of Japan and left the Army soon after he returned to the States.

Interview with Roy J. Grogan, longtime Weatherford resident and elected official, as part of the Weatherford Oral History Project. The interview includes Grogan's personal experiences of childhood and education in Weatherford, Depression-era struggles, enlisting in the U.S. Navy, and World War II. Additionally, Grogan talks about his studies at Weatherford College, Duke University, and Duke Law, his legal career with the FBI and as a land developer, his political career on the Weatherford City Council and Weatherford College Board of Regents, the integration of Weatherford schools, and his involvement in state party politics. The interview includes an appendix with Grogan's resume.
