The same week, Marshall Keeble ended a gospel meeting in Valdosta, Georgia, with 166 baptisms. The death of Cassius coincided with the rise of Marshall Keeble as the premier black preacher in Churches of Christ. How were the two men similar? How were they different? What made Cassius and Keeble unique?"

Even though the concept of the "Magic Negro" first surfaced in the early 1950s, the notion that Marshall Keeble seemingly possessed magical powers dates back to the 1930s. How does the concept of the "Magic Negro" apply to Marshall Keeble? What does the concept teach us about race relations in the larger American Context and especially in the Churches of Christ?"
