A Descriptive Study of the Trend of Contraceptive Services Available to College Students (open access)

A Descriptive Study of the Trend of Contraceptive Services Available to College Students

This study investigated the perceptions of college student health center administrators concerning the availability of contraceptive services to college students. The major purposes of the study were (1) to determine the extent to which specific contraceptive services were available to college students from various sources, (2) to determine the extent and effectiveness of any opposition or support from various pressure groups concerning the provision of contraceptive services by student health centers, and (3) to describe the trend, as .perceived by student health center directors, of student access to contraceptive services from 1970 to 1975 and to project the trend to 1980. The findings indicated that pressure activity supporting the provision of contraceptive services by student health centers arose mostly from institutionally related student groups and was considered to be "effective" (i.e., influenced administrative decision making). Pressure which arose from other groups was found to be slight and of little effectiveness.

The Process Used to Select High School Principals in the Large-City School Districts of the Nation (open access)

The Process Used to Select High School Principals in the Large-City School Districts of the Nation

The problem of this study was to examine the selection process used in the appointment of high school principals in the forty-eight large-city school districts of the nation. The purposes of this study were (1) to examine how principals of high schools in large-city districts are selected, and (2) to determine the criteria considered important in the selection process. In order to conduct this investigation a questionnaire was developed. The questionnaire was validated by a twelve-member panel composed of eleven public school administrators and a former United States Commissioner of Education. Significant findings which tend to be supported by the data are: 1. Human relations skills were considered as being most important in selecting principals. 2. Superintendents placed little value on the personal traits of candidates. 3. Instructional skills ranked third in importance. 4. The selection process depended heavily on biographical data and the use of the interview. 5. Teaching experience and a master's degree are essential. 6. Assistant superintendents are involved in the selection process more often than any other group, but superintendents are most influential in the selection process. 7. School facilities, pupils, and parents are seldom involved in the selection process, and when involved, their influence is …

Method for Improving the Perception of Reality and Understanding of the Population Problem in the College Classroom: A Simulation Game (open access)

Method for Improving the Perception of Reality and Understanding of the Population Problem in the College Classroom: A Simulation Game

The purpose of this study is the development of an educational simulation game for use in college classes. The simulation game is based on selected aspects of the population problem. The panel approved or rejected objectives on the basis of their significance as goals for college students. Twelve objectives were approved by a majority of the panel. Upon completion of the exercise, students should be able to compute population increases, to predict population sizes, and to identify birth and death rates that cause a population to increase, decrease, or remain stable. Students should also be able to describe how the following factors affect population size: cultural and religious beliefs, pressure for economic growth, investments of capital, and financial losses. Students should understand the problems of governing a country with a rapidly growing population as compared to problems in governing a country with slower population growth, and they should recognize how rapid population growth can affect the quality of life. Students should recognize decreased birth rates, increased death rates, and increased economic production as possible solutions to the population problem. Finally, students should personalize the population problem and make commitments in seeking and participating in its solutions.

Systems methodology for assessing the demographic implications of energy development. [Northwest Pacific region] (open access)

Systems methodology for assessing the demographic implications of energy development. [Northwest Pacific region]

The objective of the Pacific Northwest Regional Assessment Program is to estimate changes in the Region's environmental, socioeconomic, and health status that could result from various energy development or conservation scenarios. Battelle, Pacific Northwest Laboratories, uses a dynamic simulation model to help evaluate pertinent issues in the Northwest (Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming). One of the primary sectors of this model is the demographic sector, which provides the needed demographic information to other model sectors. Specifically, it traces the effects of various energy development scenarios on employment and population growth. The demographic sector simulates the interactions among the population, birth rate, death rate, net migration rate, and jobs available in the Region from 1960 to 2020. The population is disaggregated so that age-specific birth and death rates, age-specific propensity to migrate, and age-specific labor force participation rates can be used.

An Analysis of Higher Education in Iran and a Proposal for Its Improvement (open access)

An Analysis of Higher Education in Iran and a Proposal for Its Improvement

The problem with which this study is concerned is the development of a plan to reform the structure of the current system of Iranian higher education, both quantitatively and qualitatively. These goals have been set by the Charter of Educational Revolution and coincide with the Development Plans of the nation which have aimed to bring about a fundamental change in society. Educational history of Iran since ancient times is discussed, with special emphasis on higher education, and the religio-cultural influences in shaping the organization of educational institutions and curricula are overviewed. The nation developed one of the world's oldest scholastic centers of higher learning, Gondi-Shapur Academy, whose international faculty contributed significantly to the advancement of knowledge. Iranian culture was exposed to Islam following the Arab invasion; and Islamic doctrine, which has been opposed to secular education, has dominated the educational philosophy of the country. Western education came to Iran through military institutions and religious institutions. Modern schools increased during the last decades of the nineteenth century; however, their progressive development can be traced only from the reign of Reza Shah, beginning in 1925. The first modern university of Iran was established forty years ago. The provincial universities and other institutions …

Selected Demographic and Socioeconomic Factors Related to Urbanization in Iran, 1956-1966

Demographic and Socioeconomic factors related to the urbanization of Iran are discussed. An historical review of the growth of urbanization in Iran is reported. Factors included in the analysis are the birth, death, literacy, and mobility rates as well as the age-sex structure of the population. The data are from the national censuses of 1956 and 1966. Changes in demographic trends in both major and smaller cities during this decade are discussed in detail. The results of the analyses of these data are applicable to most developing countries. This information may be of possible aid in planning for the growth and redistribution of the Iranian population.

G. K. Chesterton: Twentieth Century Catholic Reformer (open access)

G. K. Chesterton: Twentieth Century Catholic Reformer

This thesis attempts to discover the basis of Chesterton's theories and the link between his religion and politics. The main sources for this paper are the religious and political non-fiction works by Chesterton and his collaborators. The first chapter brings G. K. from his birth in 1874 to 1908 and the publication of Orthodoxy. The second chapter describes his conversion to Roman Catholicism, and the third discusses his distinctive Christian theology. The fourth outlines G. K.'s political solution for Englands economic and social ills and how his theory--distributism-- fit into British intellectual tradition. The conclusion identifies G. K.'s romance with the Middle Ages as the link between his religious beliefs and his political utopia.

Group Interpretation of Biblical Literature: Eight Original Scripts for Use in Church

The purpose of this project was to prepare eight scripts derived from Biblical texts using various techniques of oral interpretation. All scripts employ two or more readers and are non-doctrinal in content, making them useful to any Bible-based church. Chapter I presents a statement of the problem, a review of the literature, justification for the project, the purpose, and procedures that were to be followed. Chapter II contains the scripts, general information for their use, and commentaries on each. The scripts are entitled "The Birth of Christ," "The Crucifixion," "The Resurrection," "The Second Coming of Christ," "The Last Supper," "Baptism," "Marriage," and "Christian Leadership." Chapter III includes a summary of the creative process, observations, and recommendations for future scripts.

Serpent Imagery in William Blake's Prophetic Works (open access)

Serpent Imagery in William Blake's Prophetic Works

William Blake's prophetic works are made up almost entirely of a unique combination of symbols and imagery. To understand his books it is necessary to be aware that he used his prophetic symbols because he found them apt to what he was saying, and that he changed their meanings as the reasons for their aptness changed. An awareness of this manipulation of symbols will lead to a more perceptive understanding of Blake's work. This paper is concerned with three specific uses of serpent imagery by Blake. The first chapter deals with the serpent of selfhood. Blake uses the wingless Uraeon to depict man destroying himself through his own constrictive analytic reasonings unenlightened with divine vision. Man had once possessed this divine vision, but as formal religions and a priestly class began to be formed, he lost it and worshipped only reason and cruelty. Blake also uses the image of the serpent crown to characterize priests or anyone in a position of authority. He usually mocks both religious and temporal rulers and identifies them as oppressors rather than leaders of the people. In addition to the Uraeon and the serpent crown, Blake also uses the narrow constricted body of the serpent …

Teenagers' Attitudes Toward Early Parenting (open access)

Teenagers' Attitudes Toward Early Parenting

The problem of this study was to determine the attitudes of teenagers toward early parenting. A fifty-two item questionnaire was given to 253 students enrolled in Homemaking I, Homemaking II, or Home and Family Living classes. Data are reported in five sections: teenagers' (1) attitudes about early parenting, (2) perceptions of child abuse and neglect, (3) beliefs about disciplining and punishment, (4) preparation for parenting skills, and (5) attitudes toward parenting education classes. Different results were obtained on measures of race, sex, and grade levels. Very few differences in attitudes were identified between ethnic groups and grade levels. Males and females differed in attitudes toward birth control and parenting tasks.
