Fish and Shellfish Preferences of Household Consumers
"This report is an analysis of a nationwide survey in October 1951 of household consumers' preferences for fresh and frozen fish and shellfish. The survey was conducted under the auspices of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service to aid the Nation's fishing industry, which is composed predominantly of small firms that find it difficult to make adequate contacts with consumers" (p. 1).

IPNS Upgrade: a Feasibility Study
Many of Argonne National Laboratory`s (ANL`s) scientific staff members were very active in R & D work related to accelerator-based spoliation sources in the 1970s and early 1980s. In 1984, the Seitz/Eastman Panel of the National Academy of Sciences reviewed U.S. materials science research facilities. One of the recommendations of this panel was that the United States build a reactor-based steady-state source, the Advanced Neutron Source (ANS), at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Subsequently, R & D activities related to the design of an accelerator-based source assumed a lower priority. The resumption of pulsed-source studies in this country started simultaneously with design activities in Europe aimed at the European Spallation Source (ESS). The European Community funded a workshop in September 1991 to define the parameters of the ESS. Participants in this workshop included both accelerator builders and neutron source users. A consortium of European countries has proposed to build a 5-MW pulsed source, and a feasibility study is currently under way. Soon after the birth of the ESS, a small group at ANL set about bringing themselves up to date on pulsed-source information since 1984 and studied the feasibility of upgrading ANL`s Intense Pulsed Neutron Source (IPNS) to 1 MW by …

Prevention of Significant Deterioration: Implications for Energy Research and Development
This report examines the implications of thee Clean Air Act Amendments of 1977 concerned with provisions designed to prevent the significant deterioration of air quality in areas of the nation where the ambient air is cleaner than the minimum levels required to meet National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). The legislation will affect the economic competitiveness of alternative fuel cycles for the generation of power and will have implications for the future siting of all new major sources of emissions. This paper examines the potential effects of Prevention of Significant Deterioration (PSD) legislation on energy technologies and industrial facilities and, in particular, the possible effects on energy research and development programs of the Department of Energy (DOE).

"The study of the toxicity of Ra and MsTh(Ra/sup 228/) in humans was continued. Several Thorotrast cases were also examined. Physical and clinical studies were made on 151 persons. In all cases possible gamma ray measurements were made of Ra and MsTh decay products retained in the body, alpha -ray measurements of Rn and Rn/sup 220/ in breath, a complete medical history was taken, a complete x-ray examination was made of the skeleton, and urinalysis, hematological, and blood chemistry studies were made."

The History of the Brookhaven Biology Department Mouse Colony No. 1 (Swiss-Bridge-Bagg-O'Grady-Walter Reed Strain) With Endemic Occult Cerebral Encephalitozoönosis and Colony No. 2
Innes, Zemen, Frenkel, Borner and Wright (1962) described an outbreak of encephalitozoönosis of the central nervous system in mice, a summary of which is given below for an understanding of why this appendix may be of interest. When the paper was presented for publication, the editors of the journal decided to omit the history of our mouse colony. In our opinion, to understand (a) how this infection may have arisen and (b) may have spread, and still exist in some colonies, it is of prime importance to know the history of this strain of mice used by us (and others). It also has lessons on the establishment and maintenance of so-called "disease-free" or "specific pathogen-free"* colonies of laboratory animals in general. Information on the history of the mice has been culled from Col. H. Yager, VC, Director of the Division of Veterinary Medicine, Walter Reed Army Institute of Medical Research, Washington, D. C., and from Drs, Clara Lynch and John B. Nelson, Rockefeller Institute, New York.

Development of Fueled Graphite Containing Pyrolytic-Carbon Coated Carbide Particles for Nonpurged, Gas-Cooled Reactor Systems
Abstract: Progress is reported in several areas of development of fueled graphite containing coated particles for nonurged gas-cooled reactor systems. The sol-gel process has been modified for making spherical particles of both thorium-uranium carbide and thorium-uranium oxide suitable for coating. Equipment has been assembled and methods have been developed for deposition of pyrolytic-carbon coating under well-controlled conditions. Damage to coated particles during fabrication into a graphite matrix depends on the molding pressure and the volumetric content of coated particles. Vendor-supplied coated particles and fueled graphite spheres have been evaluated extensively in both in- and out-of-reactor tests. Duplex- and triplex-coasted particles have excellent fission-gas retention at 2050 degree F to burnups of 15 at. % burnup. Fueled graphite spheres containing coated particles have good irradiation performance, but the fission-gas release rates are somewhat higher than for unsupported coated particles. Fueled graphite spheres react with water vapor about as rapidly as do Speer Mod-2 and ATJ grades of graphite. The diffusion rates in pyrolytic carbon are the same for uranium, thorium, and protactinium. The diffusion rates in the direction parallel to the deposition plane are much higher than those in the perpendicular direction.

Effects of Total Body Z Irradiation of Rats. Part I, Lethal Action of Single, Paired, and Periodic Doses
Abstract: Exposure of Sprague Dawley white rats to single doses of 900 kvp X radiation demonstrated a medium lethal dose of 600 r which was not markedly dependent upon sex, weight, or, in the case of females, stage of the estrous cycle at the time of irradiation. Deaths within 30 days were most frequent between the fourth and eighth, and between the tenth and fifteenth post- irradiation days, indicating the existence of at least two processes leading to death in the "acute" period.
