Diffraction efficiency and relative intensity of various x-ray analyzing crystals at Cu/sub K. cap alpha. / and Sn/sub K. cap alpha. / wavelengths and with two surface conditions (open access)

Diffraction efficiency and relative intensity of various x-ray analyzing crystals at Cu/sub K. cap alpha. / and Sn/sub K. cap alpha. / wavelengths and with two surface conditions

Crystals used for x-ray analysis come in many useful planes and 2d spacings with great variation in diffraction efficiency. This report compares the diffraction efficiency of 13 different crystals at two wavelengths, Cu/sub K..cap alpha../ and Sn/sub K..cap alpha../, and with two surface conditions, first with a cleaved or polished surface and second with a ground or sandblasted surface for enhanced diffraction. It is not obvious from published information how to select a crystal for best detection efficiency for a given plane or 2d spacing. The information in this report should help users select a crystal for a specific application.

Stochastic ion heating by a lower hybrid wave (open access)

Stochastic ion heating by a lower hybrid wave

The motion of an ion in a lower hybrid wave in a tokamak type plasma is studied. For ions with ..nu../sub perpendicular to/ approximately greater than ..omega../k/sub perpendicular to/ the motion is stochastic for fields satisfying E/B/sub 0/ greater than /sup 1///sub 4/ (..cap omega../sub i//..omega..)/sup /sup 1///sub 3//(..omega../k/sub perpendicular to/). Provided the perpendicular phase velocity, ..omega../k/sub perpendicular to/, can be slowed down to a few times the ion thermal speed, this stochastic ion motion may be an important mechanism by which injected rf power near the lower hybrid frequency can directly heat the ions.

Calculated electron--phonon coupling and superconducting T/sub c/ of transition metals: Mo and Pd (open access)

Calculated electron--phonon coupling and superconducting T/sub c/ of transition metals: Mo and Pd

Electron-phonon parameters lambda and ..cap alpha../sup 2/F(..omega..) are calculated for Mo and Pd. The value lambda = 0.40 for Mo agrees well with superconducting T/sub c/; for Pd lambda is 0.41.

Heavy ion clusters in the TDHF approximation. [112 to 384 MeV, cross sections] (open access)

Heavy ion clusters in the TDHF approximation. [112 to 384 MeV, cross sections]

The time-dependent Hartree-Fock method is used to produce time dependent graphical representations of the density contours of the binary cluster in the reactions /sup 14/N(112 MeV) + /sup 12/C, /sup 16/O(384 MeV) + /sup 16/O, and /sup 20/Ne(164 MeV) + /sup 58/Ni. Alpha clustering and multipole shape vibrations are seen. Predictions for d sigma/d..cap omega.., d sigma/dZ/sub f/, and d/sup 2/sigma(E/sub f/)d..cap omega..dE/sub f/vertical/sub z//sub f/ are obtained in the case of /sup 14/N + /sup 12/C and found to agree well with available experimental data. It is concluded that cluster dynamics play an essential role in heavy-ion reactions.

Development and evaluation of die materials for use in the growth of silicon ribbons by the inverted ribbon growth process: Task II. LSSA Project. Quarterly report No. 2, January 1, 1978--March 31, 1978 (open access)

Development and evaluation of die materials for use in the growth of silicon ribbons by the inverted ribbon growth process: Task II. LSSA Project. Quarterly report No. 2, January 1, 1978--March 31, 1978

Silicon sessile drop experiments were performed on mullite and beryllia substrates both with and without a chemically vapor deposited-silicon nitride (CVD-Si/sub 3/N/sub 4/) coating. Results of x-ray analysis on the thermal stability of Si/sub 3/N/sub 4/, both in the presence and absence of molten silicon, show that the as-prepared amorphous layers are converted predominantly to the ..cap alpha.. phase with high temperature treatment. Silicon ribbon specimens doped with boron (rho = 1 OMEGA-cm) were grown from dies coated with Si/sub 3/N/sub 4/ for solar cell fabrication. Solar cells without AR coatings, fabricated in two ribbon samples, gave efficiencies of 6.6% and 8.0%, respectively, relative to 9.6% for a Czochralski control.

Some double resonance and multiple quantum NMR studies in solids (open access)

Some double resonance and multiple quantum NMR studies in solids

The first section of this work presents the theory and experimental applications to analysis of molecular motion of chemical shielding lineshapes obtained with high resolution double resonance NMR techniques. Analysis of /sup 13/C powder lineshapes in hexamethylbenzene (HMB) and decamethylferrocene (DMFe) show that these molecules reorient in a jumping manner about the symmetry axis. Analysis of proton chemical shielding lineshapes of residual protons in heavy ice (D/sub 2/O) show that protons are exchanged among the tetrahedral positions of neighboring oxygen atoms, consistent with motion expected from defect migration. The second section describes the application of Fourier Transform Double Quantum NMR to measurement of chemical shielding of deuterium in powder samples. Studies of partially deuterated benzene and ferrocene give equal shielding anisotropies, ..delta..sigma = -6.5 ppM. Theoretical predictions and experimental measurements of dipolar couplings between deuterons using FTDQ NMR are presented. Crystals of BaClO/sub 3/.D/sub 2/O, ..cap alpha..,..beta.. d-2 HMB and ..cap alpha..,..beta..,..gamma.. d-3 HMB were studied, as were powders of d-2 HMB and anisic acid. The third section discusses general multiple quantum spectroscopy in dipolar coupled spin systems. Theoretical description is made for creation and detection of coherences between states without quantum number selection rules ..delta..m = +-1. Descriptions of …

High temperature range recuperator. Phase I: materials selection, design optimization, evaluation and thermal testing. Final report, April 1977-May 1978 (open access)

High temperature range recuperator. Phase I: materials selection, design optimization, evaluation and thermal testing. Final report, April 1977-May 1978

Initial efforts to develop, test, and evaluate counterflow recuperator designs are reported for the High Temperature Range Recuperator project. Potential materials to withstand glass furnace exhaust environments at temperatures up to 2800/sup 0/F were evaluated on the bases of material properties, fabrication capability, and relative performance in the flue environment of a day tank glass furnace. Polycrystalline alumina (Vistal), reaction sintered silicon carbide (KT and NC 430), chemically vapor deposited silicon carbide (CVD) and sintered alpha silicon carbide proved most satisfactory in the material temperature range of 2300/sup 0/F to 2800/sup 0/F. Relatively pure alumina (AD 998 and AD 94), mullite and cordierite were most satisfactory in the material temperature range of 1700/sup 0/F to 2300/sup 0/F. Recuperator designs were evaluated on the bases of cold air flow tests on laboratory models, fabricability, and calculated thermomechanical stress under expected operating conditions. Material strengths are shown to be greater than expected stresses by factors ranging from 2.6 for KT silicon carbide to 16 for cordierite. Recuperator test sections were fabricated from KT silicon carbide and subjected to thermal stress conditions in excess of twice the expected operating conditions with no deterioration or failure evident. A test section was subjected to the …
