The Heat Treatment, Transformation Reactions, and Mechanical Properties of Some High-Strength Zirconium-Base Alloys (open access)

The Heat Treatment, Transformation Reactions, and Mechanical Properties of Some High-Strength Zirconium-Base Alloys

Zirconium alpha-beta alloys were found to respond to solution and aging heat treatmeats very similarly to titanium alpha-beta alloys. A zirconium-5 wt.% molybderum-2 wt.%fl tin alloy was heat treated to a L68,500-psi tensile strength and a 153,500-psi yield strength, with 11.5% elongation in 1 in. In addition, a zirconium-5 wt.% niobinm-2 wt.% tin alloy was heat treated to a 190,500-psi tensile and a 178,000-psi yield strength, with 2% elongation. The transformations that occur upon aging these alloys may be represented as follows: beta deg C was con- omega + beta /sub r/ deg C was con- alpha + beta / sub u/and alpha deg C was con- alpha + beta /sub r/. Preliminary elevated-temperature propenties were very good. The zirconium-5 wt.%fl molybderum-2 wt.%fl tin alloy solution treated at 1525 F and aged 8 hr at 1000 F was evaluated for tensile strength and 100-hr rupture life at 840 F. The tensile strengh, yield strength, and elongation were 111,000 psi, 84,500 psi, and l2%fl, respectively. The 100-hr rupture strength was about 95,000 psi. (auth)

A Study of the Mechanisms of Heat Treatment of Zirconium-Base Alloys : Status Report, July 1, 1955 - February 29, 1956

The kinetics of transformation of zirconium binary alloys is being pursued. Mechanical property variation as a function of transformation if also being investigated. Zirconium-tin and zirconium-titanium alloys transform very rapidly when quenched from the beta field. These alloys have, generally speaking, been demonstrated to be not amenable to heat treatment in the normal sense of the word. Eutectoid alloys, principally zirconium-molybdenum alloys, have shown a definite response to heat treatment in terms of mechanical property variation. An embrittling agent, probably "omega" phase, is suspect at this time for the brittleness observed in certain molybdenum alloys and the very high hardness levels reached in other alloys such as zirconium-niobium and zirconium-thorium. Work to establish the existence of omega phase is in progress and, it is hoped, suggestions for avoiding the brittle condition associated with it will be forthcoming.

Uranium Alloy Newsletter (open access)

Uranium Alloy Newsletter

Argonne National Lab. Annealing experiments of highpurity C --U alloys in the gamma region in an Ar atmosphere show that the metal is subject to decarbinization. Fourteen binary U--Pd alloys were prepared and examined. Pd solubility in gamma U is less than 1 wt.% at 890 deg C. Seventeen binary alloys of U-Ru were prepared and examined in the as-cast condition. The corrosion resistance after irradiation of U--Si alloys was tested. Homogeneous U- -Ta alloys have not been obtained. Th-rich U alloys were found to be more stable under irradiation than the best U alloys. The effect of heat treatment on microstructure is being studied as part of the effort to understand the effect of alloying on corrosion resistance in Ti--U alloys. Crystal and corrosion studies on U--Zr alloys are reported. Armour Research Foundation. Small ternary additions were found to greatly affect the transformation characteristics of U-- Nb alloys, and a hardness change was noted for this alloy. Preliminary data for U--Nb--Zr alloy demonstrated a relationship between the strained matrix and the physical properties of the alloy. Battelle Memorial Institute. Phase relationships between the intermediate delta phases of the U--Mo and U--Ti systems were conducted. U--Zr, U--Mo, and U--Nb alloys …
