The Role of Ledge Nucleation/Migration in ''Omega'' Plate Thickening Behavior in Al-Cu-Mg-Ag Alloys (open access)

The Role of Ledge Nucleation/Migration in ''Omega'' Plate Thickening Behavior in Al-Cu-Mg-Ag Alloys

The thickening kinetics of {Omega} plates in an Al-4Cu-0.3Mg-0.2Ag (wt. %) alloy have been measured at 200 C, 250 C and 300 C using conventional transmission electron microscopy techniques. At all temperatures examined the thickening showed a linear dependence on time. At 200 C the plates remained less than 6nm in thickness after 1000h exposure. At temperatures above 200 C the thickening kinetics are greatly increased. Atomic resolution Z-contrast microscopy has been used to examine the structure and chemistry of the (001){sub {Omega}} {parallel} (111){sub {alpha}} interphase boundary in samples treated at each temperature. In all cases, two atomic layers of Ag and Mg segregation were found at the broad face of the plate. The risers of the growth ledges and the ends of the plates were free of segregation. No significant levels of Ag or Mg were detected inside the plate at any time. The necessary redistribution of Ag and Mg accompanying a migrating thickening ledge occurs at all temperatures and is not considered to play a decisive role in the excellent coarsening resistance exhibited by the {Omega} plates at temperatures up to 200 C. Plates transformed at 200 C rarely contained ledges and usually exhibited a strong vacancy …

High Energy K(alpha) Radiography Using High-intensity, Short-pulse Lasers (open access)

High Energy K(alpha) Radiography Using High-intensity, Short-pulse Lasers

We have performed experiments using Callisto, the Vulcan 100 TW and the Vulcan Petawatt high intensity lasers to understand the characteristics of high energy, K{alpha} x-ray sources and to implement workable radiography solutions at 20-100 keV. Our measurements show that the K{alpha} size from a simple foil target is larger than 60 {micro}m, far larger than the experiment resolution requirement. The total K{alpha} yield is independent of target thicknesses verifying that refluxing plays a major role in photon generation. Smaller radiating volumes emit brighter K{alpha} radiation. 1-D radiography experiments using small-edge-on foils resolved 10 {micro}m features with high contrast. We tested a variety of small volume 2-D point sources such as cones, wires, and embedded wires, measuring photon yields and comparing our measurements with predictions from hybrid-PIC LSP simulations. In addition to high-energy, high-resolution backlighters, future experiments will also need imaging detectors and diagnostic tools that are workable in the 20-100 keV energy range. An initial look at some of these detector issues is also presented.

Exploration of GaTe for Gamma Detectors (open access)

Exploration of GaTe for Gamma Detectors

The layered III-VI semiconductor Gallium Telluride has potential for room temperature gamma ray spectroscopy applications due to its band gap of 1.67 eV, and average atomic number of 45:31 (Ga) and 52 (Te). The physical properties of GaTe are highly anisotropic due to covalent bonding within the layer and van der Waals bonding between layers. This work reports the results of surface and bulk processing, surface characterization, and electrical characterization of diodes formed on both the laminar and non-laminar GaTe surfaces. Alpha detection measurements were also performed.

X-ray Spectroscopy with Elliptical Crystals and Face-On Framing Cameras (open access)

X-ray Spectroscopy with Elliptical Crystals and Face-On Framing Cameras

X-ray spectrometers using elliptically bent crystals have desirable properties for applications requiring broad spectral coverage, good spectral resolution, and minimized source broadening. Previous work used custom-positioned film or microchannel plate detectors. They find it is also useful and cost-effective to field elliptical crystals in existing snouts on the face-on gated microchannel plate framing cameras commonly used at many facilities. they numerically explored the full design space (spectral range and resolution) of elliptical crystals compatible with the new MSPEC multipurpose spectrometer snout. They have tested at the Omega laser an elliptical RAP crystal with 174 mm focal length, 0.9885 eccentricity, and 4.6 degree inclination, viewing from 1.0 to at least 1.7 keV with E/dE of 300-500. A slit (2x mag) images 3 mm sources with 70 um spatial resolution.

METALLURGY DIVISION ANNUAL PROGRESS REPORT FOR PERIOD ENDING SEPTEMBER 1, 1959

7 = 9 9 9 9 7 7 7 = 9 9 9 95 : > @ 9 ; 5 8 @ = K : . ighpurity Nb deformed by impact or slow compression at - 196 deg C. An apparent phase transformation was detected in high- purity Ga deformed at 4.2 deg K. The specific heat of the group IV-A metals and alloys of Zr-In and Zr-Sn were measured from 1.2 to 4.5 deg K. In the Zr-rich portion of the Zr-Ga phase diagram, the alpha / beta phase boundaries of Zr are depressed by additions of Ga and the beta phase decomposes by a eutectoid reaction. The Cd pressures of alpha - and beta - Zr alloys containing 1 to 11% Cd were measured between 1090 and 1325 deg K. Crystal structures of several unreported transition-metal fluorides, rare-earth hydrides and nitrides were determined. Progress in the study of phase transitions in beta -quenched Zr-Nb alloys aged below the eutectoid temperature is reported. A high-temperature investigation of the order-disorder phase transition of a Cu31 at.% Au alloy has revealed an intermediate periodic antiphase condition. A previously described x- raydiffraction technique for the measurement of the thickness and strain of …
