[Calibration methods for neutron diagnostics at Omega]. DOE/NLUF final report (open access)

[Calibration methods for neutron diagnostics at Omega]. DOE/NLUF final report

The investigation of Calibration Methods for Neutron Diagnostics at Omega is still underway. The data shown here is a compilation of measurements taken at Omega during the time of the grant. The data set has been updated with additional information taken this year. The neutron yield from an ICF event was determined by measuring the activity of an aluminum sample activated by target-produced DT neutrons. The radioactive nuclei {sup 24}Na and {sup 27}Mg, which were produced via the {sup 27}Al(n,{alpha}){sup 24}Na and {sup 27}Al(n,p){sup 27}Mg direct reactions, beta decay to excited states of {sup 24}Mg and {sup 27}Al respectively. These excited states then emitted gamma rays as the nuclei de-excite to their respective ground states. The gamma rays are detected and counted. From their numbers the neutron yield is determined.

In-situ spatially resolved x-ray diffraction mapping of the alpha to beta to alpha transformation in commercially pure titanium arc welds (open access)

In-situ spatially resolved x-ray diffraction mapping of the alpha to beta to alpha transformation in commercially pure titanium arc welds

Spatially Resolved X-Ray Diffraction (SRXRD) is used to map the {alpha}{r_arrow}{beta}{r_arrow}{alpha} phase transformation in the heat affected zone (HAZ) of commercially pure titanium gas tungsten arc welds. In-situ SRXRD experiments were conducted on arc welds using a 200 pm diameter x-ray beam at Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory (SSRL). A map was created which identifies six HAZ microstructural regions that exist between the liquid weld pool and the base metal during welding. The first region is single phase {beta}-Ti that forms in a 2- to 3-mm band adjacent to the liquid weld pool. The second region is back transformed {alpha}-Ti that forms behind the portion of the HAZ where {beta}-Ti was once present at higher temperatures. The third region is completely recrystallized {alpha}-Ti that forms in a 2- to 3-mm band surrounding the single phase {beta}-Ti region. Recrystallized {alpha}-Ti was observed by itself and also with varying amounts of {beta}-Ti. The fourth region of the weld is the partially transformed zone where {alpha}-Ti and {beta}-Ti coexist during welding. The fifth region is directly behind the partially transformed zone and consists of a mixture of recrystallized and back transformed {alpha}-Ti The sixth region is farthest from the weld pool and consists of …

Particle deposition in human and canine tracheobronchial casts (open access)

Particle deposition in human and canine tracheobronchial casts

The aim of this work is to measure deposition patterns and efficiencies of aerosol particles within realistic, single-pathway physical models of the tracheobronchial airways of humans and experimental animals over a range of particle sizes for a variety of respiratory modes and rates. This will provide data needed to assess the dose to the bronchial epithelium from inhaled radon progeny. In the current year theoretical studies based on a developing flow model were extended. We concluded that although the developing flow model is better predictor of the data than assumption of parabolic flow, the predicated deposition is significantly lower than that predicted by our best fit equation. The mass size dispersion of particles classified according to their electrical mobilities was also studies. For the conditions tested, doubly charged particles constituted 9--13% of the total particle number concentration and 24--48% of the total mass concentration. We demonstrated that the multiply charged particles are effectively removed, and nearly monodisperse particles produced, if an impactor is placed in the aerosol generation system. A condensation aerosol generator was constructed and tested for the production of high concentrations of radioactively tagged aerosol particles with diameters from 0.2 to 10{mu}m. 9 refs.

A Study of the Mechanisms of Heat Treatment of Zirconium-Base Alloys : Status Report, July 1, 1955 - February 29, 1956 (open access)

A Study of the Mechanisms of Heat Treatment of Zirconium-Base Alloys : Status Report, July 1, 1955 - February 29, 1956

The kinetics of transformation of zirconium binary alloys is being pursued. Mechanical property variation as a function of transformation if also being investigated. Zirconium-tin and zirconium-titanium alloys transform very rapidly when quenched from the beta field. These alloys have, generally speaking, been demonstrated to be not amenable to heat treatment in the normal sense of the word. Eutectoid alloys, principally zirconium-molybdenum alloys, have shown a definite response to heat treatment in terms of mechanical property variation. An embrittling agent, probably "omega" phase, is suspect at this time for the brittleness observed in certain molybdenum alloys and the very high hardness levels reached in other alloys such as zirconium-niobium and zirconium-thorium. Work to establish the existence of omega phase is in progress and, it is hoped, suggestions for avoiding the brittle condition associated with it will be forthcoming.

Ideal ballooning modes in axisymmetric mirror machines (open access)

Ideal ballooning modes in axisymmetric mirror machines

A simple code is described that finds marginally stable (..omega../sup 2/ = 0) ballooning-type MHD modes, localized about a field line in an axisymmetric, open-ended, plasma confinement device. The equations are based on a lower bound for the perturbed energy delta W, derived by W. Newcomb from the ideal MHD energy principle, and are cast in the form of a Ricatti equation for the first derivative of the eigenfunction, with the open boundary conditions that this derivative vanish at the plasma boundary down each field line. The input to the code is the two-dimensional shape of a field line, the field strength B(s), and parameters to define pressure profiles throughout the system. The objective is to find the highest plasma pressures for which the given line is MHD-stable.

Special Zirconium Alloys. Report No. 18 (Summary) for January 1, 1956- October 31, 1957 (open access)

Special Zirconium Alloys. Report No. 18 (Summary) for January 1, 1956- October 31, 1957

Tensile properties amd impact strengths were determined for iodide Zr, sponge Zr, and alloys based on both grades of metal, containing nominally 1.5% M. Sheet specimens, welded and unwelded, were tested. Tensile properties were established at room temperature and 300 deg C. Impact strength values were measured at --100 deg , R.T., 100 deg , 200 deg , and 300 deg C. These (alpha) materials generally exhibited a lack of heat treatability, litile or no deterioration of properties due to welding, and essentially no indication of impact transition temperature. Tensile strength and impact behavior were established for alloys based on iodide zirconium containing 15% Nb, 15% Nb + 2% Pd, 15% Nb + 2% Pt, 15% Nb + 1% Fe, and a binary sponge zirconium + 15% Hb alloy. High strength levels could be established by proper heat treatment. The presence of Pd, Ft, or Fe seemed to delay the formation of the embrittiing agent as determined by hardness and resistivity vs time of anneal curves for these alloys. uth)
