Inclusive study of 200 GeV/c pi-neon interactions (open access)

Inclusive study of 200 GeV/c pi-neon interactions

200 GeV/c pi-neon interactions are studied in the Fermilab 30 inch bubble chamber which was filled with a neon - hydrogen mixture (31 molar % neon). Scan results and measurements of a representative event sample yield proton, gamma and pion multiplicities and single particle spectra. R was measured to be 1.21 +- 0.05 for both pi +- and pi/sup 0/. Nearly identical to lower energy measurements, R is strongly dependent on the number of observed protons in the event. KNO scaling is observed for the corrected multiplicity distributions. Scaling, however, appears violated if events with a fixed number of protons are considered. Study of the pion single particle spectra show the excess particle production of the neon target over that of hydrogen is largest in the target fragmentation region and nearly constant (1.28 +- 0.02) in the central production region. The dependence of the pion rapidity distribution on the number of protons is consistent with collisions on either one or two nucleons. The s/sup - 1/2/ dependence of the P/sub parallel/ spectra is very similar to that seen in hydrogen, with limiting fragmentation reached only for beam energies much greater than 200 GeV/c. The proton momentum distribution is energy independent …

Annual and Seasonal Global Temperature Anomalies in the Troposphere and Low Stratosphere, 1958 - Summer 1986 (open access)

Annual and Seasonal Global Temperature Anomalies in the Troposphere and Low Stratosphere, 1958 - Summer 1986

Surface temperatures and thickness-derived temperatures from a network of 63 well-distributed radiosonde stations have been used to estimate global and zonal annual and seasonal temperatures anomalies for the period 1958 through the summer of 1986. These anomaly estimates were made using a 1958-1977 reference period mean. Anomaly estimates are provided for surface, troposphere (850-300 mb), tropopause layer (300-100 mb), and low stratosphere (100-50 mb); (100-30mb) layers and for polar (60{degrees}-90{degrees}), temperate (30{degrees}-60{degrees}), subtropical (10{degrees}-30{degrees}), and equatorial (10{degrees}N - 10{degrees}S) zones, as well as the tropics, both hemispheres, and the world.

Environmental monitoring report, 1980, 1981, 1982 for the former Middlesex Sampling Plant and Middlesex Municipal Landfill Sites (open access)

Environmental monitoring report, 1980, 1981, 1982 for the former Middlesex Sampling Plant and Middlesex Municipal Landfill Sites

During periods of remedial action activities conducted in 1980 and 1981 at designated sites in the Borough of Middlesex, New Jersey, air, water, and sediments were sampled and analyzed to verify the adequacy of contamination control and compliance with applicable standards. Analytical results show that remedial action activities at the Middlesex Sampling Plant (MSP) and vicinity properties were conducted, with few exceptions, within applicable standards. During 1982, a surveillance monitoring program was initiated at the MSP and at the former Middlesex Municipal Landfill (MML) site. Radioactivity was measured in air and water to allow calculation of radiation doses to the public. The resulting dose from external gamma radiation at the MSP site boundary in 1982 was approximately twice natural background and less than 40% (background included) of the Department of Energy (DOE) standard. The highest continuous occupancy dose to the bronchial epithelium (lungs) from radon exposure at the MML boundary was approximately twice the background value or about 60% (background included) of the DOE standard. 12 references, 15 figures, 28 tables.

Filling the strategic petroleum reserve: its price and economic effects (open access)

Filling the strategic petroleum reserve: its price and economic effects

The estimated movements of the economic indicators under the 1989 target plan (with no OPEC retaliation) are small and could be considered almost negligible when viewed against the size of the economy and the error properties inherent in the macroeconomic model. Therefore, it cannot be firmly stated that a significant loss in real output and increases in inflation and unemployment occur in filling the Reserve. Accelerating the fill rate to meet the 1985 Target (without OPEC retaliation) could increase world oil prices from $0.90 to $1.00 above the base case of no Reserve buildup for the year 1980 to 1985. For the same period, this results in an estimated average decrease in real output of 0.6 percent per year below the baseline level for the United States, an increase in the inflation rate by an average of 0.3 percentage points per year, and an increase in the unemployment rate by an average of 0.2 percentage points per year above their baseline values. In the OPEC retaliation scenario, the world oil price is projected to rise immediately by 19.6 percent above its baseline level, and, by 1985, to be 6.1 percent above the baseline level for the 1989 Target, and 8.4 …

Geoecology: a county-level environmental data base for the conterminous United States (open access)

Geoecology: a county-level environmental data base for the conterminous United States

The Geoecology Data Base represents a unique compilation of computerized environmental data for research and development needs. Environmental assessment and planning for energy development require rapid access to data at appropriate spatial and temporal scales. In the Environmental Sciences Division (ESD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), we have developed an integrated data base of diverse environmental resource information from extant sources. Data are stored at the county level of resolution for the conterminous United States with some data available for subcounty units within larger, more diverse eastern counties. The Geoecology Data Base contains selected data on terrain and soils, water resources, forestry, vegetation, agriculture, land use, wildlife, air quality, climate, natural areas, and endangered species. Basic files on human population are also included to complement the environmental files. Data are stored in metric-SI units. The Geoecology Data Base is currently fulfilling diverse ongoing research needs while it is being expanded and updated as needs and new data are identified. This report is both a documentation and a user's guide to the Geoecology Data Base. It describes the Data Base design, illustrates applications, provides examples of accessing the Data Base, and gives general information on the data set contents.

Earthquake analyses for structural definition and material characteristics of the Mono Craters and Long Valley magma systems. Volume 1. Final report (open access)

Earthquake analyses for structural definition and material characteristics of the Mono Craters and Long Valley magma systems. Volume 1. Final report

This report presents the results of research undertaken to increase understanding of the tectonic and magmatic processes occurring in the Long Valley and Mono Craters regions of California. The studies performed were of four different types. The first were based on a seismic data collection effort carried out at Long Valley. Both reflected and screened arrivals were searched for with essentially negative results. The second category of investigations carried out were intensive studies of important large earthquakes that have occurred in the Long Valley region. Some evidence indicates that, rather than being caused by slip on a fault plane, they were caused by magma injection. The third types of studies involved statistical analyses of seismicity data. The final studies involved the development of some important new theoretical methods for modeling the effects of screening bodies, such as magma bodies, on three dimensional wave fields.

1986 wet deposition temporal and spatial patterns in North America (open access)

1986 wet deposition temporal and spatial patterns in North America

The focus of this report is on North American wet deposition temporal patterns from 1979 to 1986 and spatial patterns for 1986. The report provides statistical distribution summaries of annual precipitation-weighted average concentration and annual deposition for nine ion species: hydrogen, sulfate, nitrate, ammonium, calcium, chloride, sodium, potassium, and magnesium. The data in the report are from the Acid Depositing System (ADS) for the statistical reporting of North American deposition data. Isopleth maps, based on surface estimation using kriging, display concentration and deposition spatial patterns of pH, hydrogen, sulfate, nitrate, ammonium, and calcium ion species for 1986 annual, winter, and summer periods. The temporal pattern analyses use a subset of 30 sites over an 8-year (1979-1986) period and an expanded subset of 137 sites with greater spatial coverage over a 5-year (1982-1986) period. The 8-year period represents the longest period with wet deposition monitoring data unavailable that has a sufficient number of sites with data of known quality to allow a descriptive summary of annual temporal patterns. 19 refs., 105 figs., 29 tabs.

Evaluation of TASTEX task H: measurement of plutonium isotopic abundances by gamma-ray spectrometry (open access)

Evaluation of TASTEX task H: measurement of plutonium isotopic abundances by gamma-ray spectrometry

This report describes a computer-based gamma spectrometer system that was developed for measuring isotopic and total plutonium concentrations in nitric acid solutions. The system was installed at the Tokai reprocessing plant where it is undergoing testing and evaluation as part of the Tokai Advanced Safeguards Exercise (TASTEX). Objectives of TASTEX Task H, High-Resolution Gamma Spectrometer for Plutonium Isotopic Analysis, the methods and equipment used, the installation and calibration of the system, and the measurements obtained from several reprocessing campaigns are discussed and described. In general, we find that measurements for gamma spectroscopy agree well with those of mass spectrometry and of other chemical analysis. The system measures both freshly processed plutonium from the product accountability tank and aged plutonium solutions from storage tanks. 14 figures, 15 tables.
